Our pressure up field is poor because we’re turning the ball over a lot, you can’t get great defensive pressure on clean uncontested ball that we’re just giving to opposition teams. Our game plan was about denying possession and you can only do that if you put the ball into dangerous places and stretch their defensive structures.
That’s an offensive problem first, we like to play clean but we continually select a side that won’t compete when the ball does get dirty. We can’t control the defensive efforts of other teams, If we’re sitting back and playing conservative backwards of center football then when we do turn it over it it costs us on the scoreboard. Playing tall has cut our inside 50 count and diminished our capacity to strangle sides.
Turnovers this year.
Brisbane - 73 to 70
GWS - 57 to 65
Collingwood - 56 to 53
Fremantle - 87 to 74
Port - 92 to 74
Essendon moved the ball past us a lot. Port Adelaide were able to stifle all offensive movement and we didn’t have the personnel to effectively transition to attack. Not the same IMO. Blame the mids for not winning their fare share but at times this year our transition from defence has been abysmal.
Aim to halve the midfield battle, but that’s not enough if our ball movement has had all the life sucked out of it on Thursday evening.
