Oh and **** the club for AGAIN throwing Brander to the wolves on a tough away game. It’s as if they don’t want the kid to succeed. If he’s dropped again after an inevitable loss I’ll be yelling abuse at the coaches next open training session.
Or is it that they rate him highly ?

I know he wasn't in the squad to begin with, but it feels like a missed opportunity for Matt Allen. Would have been good to see what he's got at AFL level. Venables isn't exactly knocking the door down at WAFL level.

It’s not a comment on our schedule, more a comment on how we’ve used Brander.

Last year we debuted him as a key forward at the SCG, matched up directly on Grundy in his 250th game with no JK in the side. Dropped the next week.

Similarly this year, slippery round one game as a wing/forward away against Brisbane, dropped the next week.

Now he comes in to face the top of the ladder Cats at a ground we’ve one at once since 1999.

I think it’s fair enough to want to give a young player more than one week to prove themselves. I don’t know how it could be expected that he’d thrive in that sort of patchy opportunity. The league would be pretty barren if you had to turn in a star performance just to get consecutive weeks of football.
I was at the SCG - it was team thrashing. Brander was so destroyed physically that it would have been unwise to play him again until he built some confidence and developed both physically and game craft wise.

I thing the club is manageing his development extremely well. He has a lot to offer but it will take time.

The implication being that Oscar will chop out for Hickey when/ if the ball goes forward, and we're still going for the three-prong attack. Brander gets swung back because he's a full-size KPP to replace Barrass. Hard to see Rotham squeezing Schofield out if Brander is the LTI replacement for Barrass.

Big positive is we're down a tall across the forward half and should have a little extra run. Happy to have a discrete forward in Redden's absence, hopefully, it will pay dividends when it comes to outside run and Simmo persists with forwards over midfielders. Maybe just maybe he'll squeeze Sheed back into the primary ball group instead of putting him forward of the ball at the expense of the team's ball movement and contested game.

It's definitely an anti-Brander conspiracy within the club. Nothing to do with Vardy being out of form combined with Geelong being a team you can play one ruckman against.
This is a bonus opportunity for him. His fans should be happy. If Vardy goes back to the WAFL and finds some form then that's a good thing for the Eagles. If Brander shows a bit then that's a good thing too.
Next up we've got the Suns - another team we can potentially play a lone ruckman against - so the ball is very much in Brander's court.

If they rate him highly why won’t they let Brander have a run at it with a few games in a row? They give him 1 tough opportunity then drop him immediately. How’s he meant to prove his ability like that?

Has the Round 7 team been named already?

Starting to think Mallen is going to waste away in the 2's forever....

No, but the odds are Geelong beat us convincing on Sunday at Kardinia Park and the Eagles make changes for round 7 at which point Brander in the past has been dropped 2/2.

Vardy another victim of the 3 tall forward policy we are running with.

It would be interesting to see the midfield combinations each Ruckman is working with. The bloke tapping to Gaff, Cripps, Darling and Jetta is going to have a much harder time of it than the bloke rucking to Shue, Yeo, Redden and Sheed.

Ah well. Hopefully Dolph can take his frustrations out on Claremont and find some touch.

In all seriousnes, can someone, anyone, present a good case for what exactly Masten is doing that's so important that it's keeping him in the side?
Team is a whole lot less jubilant without him.

There’s been several explanations over numerous threads including this one.

I’ve tried several times. To put it as succinctly as possible, which isn’t super easy but here goes:

• His job is to play defensively on the wing. The defensive role allows better users like Hurn and Jetta to be more aggressive once we’ve secured possession.

See this post.

• He’s often our best outlet option coming out of the backline, due to his ridiculous gut running. Masten isn’t out there to link up the mids and forwards, he’s there to give the backline an exit option. There have been times this year where we try to switch, he presents an option down the left wing (say), the team resets it back inside D50 and somehow Masten is again the one on the end of the switched kick down the right wing. He’s crucial in setting up our possession game out of the backline, rather than forcing the backs to smash it down the line every time.

• His job isn’t to go out there and try to get 30 touches a game, so I doubt the coaches are bothered by his disposal count. The solution isn’t just “why can’t Gaff and Sheed play on the wings”, because Masten isn’t out there to do the traditional winger death by 1000 cuts, speed on the outside role.

See this post.

• He is still one of the best kicks in our team at hitting a lead inside 50. It would be nice if he could do that more often but as discussed he rarely forays forward enough to show this off anymore. Point stands that he’s not this disposal liability people seem to think, and he’s good for two or three hit **** i50 per game.

I’m not saying he’s perfect or is the only one who can do what he does. I’m not disputing that he’s bumped off the loose footy far too easily, or that he isn’t prone to a decent number of WTF moments. I‘ve had him in my outs for several weeks, but his role is his role and the coaching staff seem to think he’s the best person for it at the moment. Basically, I don’t think we as fans appreciate what his role is in the eyes of the coaching staff, and I’d suggest they’re fairly happy with what he’s doing despite the lack of output in your traditional winger sense.

The conversation is sort of a two parter - is the defensive wing role crucial to our game? Given Hurn and Jetta’s increased output, and the fact we won a flag with this setup, I’d say definitively yes. The other question then becomes is Masten the best player for that role? Given he’s played in 30 of our last 31 games, I’d say the coaching staff believe he is, which I assume is down to his tank (as it surely couldn’t be down to his grunt or ability to accumulate).

I think the most likely person to supplant him any time soon will be Smith, because they clearly lean heavily on Masten’s tank to do what is required of the red winger role. Brander is also a chance if he could get his tank up, and they’ve used him as the defensive wing throughout preseason.

Venners averages 10 disposals in the WAFL then gets names on ball for the seniors. Simmo mastertroll.

He was originally named on the extended bench, then put on the field in Redden’s spot when Redden came out.

Players don’t have to play where they’re named on the Thursday or Friday. Contrary to the belief on Facebook where people think Schofield will be playing on Rohan and Jetta on Hawkins

He'll get a run this year.

On SM-G925I using BigFooty.com mobile app
Players to have waited more than 3 years for a debut:
3 years, 17 rounds - Zach Beeck
3 years, 9 rounds - Beau Wilkesmaister
3 years, 6 rounds and counting - Matthew Allen
3 years, 6 rounds - Jeremy McGovern
3 years, 4 rounds - Fraser McInnes
