Another outstanding performance by Whan who's been one of the biggest improvers in the draft pool through the first block of games. His spearing left foot kick into the forward 50 is an elite weapon and it was on full display here with him setting up his teammates with a number of direct score assists. His powerful frame is an asset in contested situations, and his midfield combination with Fred in this game was far too much for Claremont to handle.

Oh My God Wow GIF

Mate as someone who clearly watches A LOT of footy, is the consensus of the other guys having him outside top 20 surprising or is there a lot of decent top 20 names? I cant reconcile Whan being outside the top 20 and it being a shallow draft apparently

Noob has Whan top 10 in his mock draft.

I don't want to bad mouth anyone else. There are a lot of people doing these ranking lists these days and I imagine they have varying amounts of actual exposure to the form and play of the kids they're ranking. Its a ton of work to get through the hours necessary to watch all the games.

I trust the RMC guys have a solid knowledge and coverage of all the talent, so they must have their reasons why they don't have him higher. They mentioned that he's knocking on the door, so perhaps they'll move him up some in their next list.

I wouldn't worry about it. The Champs will give us more insight for all these kids against similar level peer competitors.

To be clear, I respect the hell out of those guys, I just want to know I'm not crazy and brace myself for a higher bid than current estimates haha. I fully expect everyone to have different rankings anyway

I'm more bullish than others on the strength of this pool and I still have Whan in the top 10 even so.

  • elite foot skills
  • powerful frame and enjoyment of physical contact
  • clean hands at ground level and in marking contests
  • IQ to position himself and impact on turnover in either direction
  • tank and gut running

If he's lacking elite pace then he's shown that he has enough to consistently find clear space for a damaging disposal, and ultimately most of the star midfielders in the comp aren't express pace anyway.

He looks great but I still want to see more clearance ability. Can't wait to see him against the Vics.

Without comparing to everyone else, that's everything I've been seeing in your videos as well. The left foot is great and all, but I love the repeat efforts and clean hands in the contest. Pace is fine, not elite but not something I'd point to as a limiter (like an Erasmus). He's kind of like if Cooper Simpson was bigger, angrier and a better kick haha.

Biggest negative I get from watching the videos is yes, colts is a level off the better comps, let's see him at the Champs.

Mundy didn't have express pace and in a radio interview I heard with him basically said that was probably he different suffer from many soft tissue injuries and had a long career. He also had all of those other traits. If Obi Whan turns to another Mundy like player, Freo will be blessed. He may not of been the quickest, but he could slow everything down when the ball was in his hands.

It would serve Fremantle's interests for Whan to miss the U18s carnival but the young man deserves to be taken as high as he can.
We will be able to match with our 2nd rounder and third rounders pretty easily if han went top 15. Early mocks consisistently have 6 or seven bid requiring players in the top 12. If that happens teams will be rquiring a ton of points more than their first pick. Eg if Brisbane finished 13 but if their Academy required a bid at 6 then they would require 370 more points than the pick so they trade down for more multiple picks but more points. My point is that 2nd and third rounder will move up the draft with the early bids meaning more points for our 2nd and 3rd rounders than the start of the draft if if Whan was bid at 15

Ive seen footage of him running away from players in games. I think he has elite pace. He's also definitely an inside outside player. He will probably start his career as a half back wing. One of the write-ups said he was still growing and is now 184cm. He's probably going to be a bit taller given his age. Last year he was listed at 180cm.

Anyone know the time & location of the U18's practice match this weekend.

Gotta be Obi surely
Ken, Kenny, 50 star wars meme references, Chosen Whan, Ewen...

Some other people had other great names earlier. "Whanny" is everything wrong with whichever gen we are up to these days
