Half time report

Whan: playing with a bit of a niggle but still finding the ball. 13 disposals and 2 goals. He has some moves in traffic.

Robinson: 7 disposals for the half. It's his first game of the season so a bit rusty but he has started to come into the game more. He is playing against kids slightly older than him so will take some time.

Rodriguez: Just a very clean and classy player.

Ryda: 8 goals in a half! Beautiful set of hands and reads the play well. Plays a very similar style to Sturt.
Has he got gimmies in the goal square? Or have they all been good kicks at goal?

Whan picking up 25-30 a week and going at 2 goals a game is going to cost us.

We watched something pretty special in the first half of this game as Freo NGA Ryda Luke managed to kick and incredible 8 goals from 8 kicks, doing it in a variety of ways. He completely disappeared in the second half, but his first half heroics will certainly give everyone a story to remember.

Thanks legend, that has to be the most uninspiring 8 goals in a half you'll ever see haha. Just 40min of footy where everything goes your way...

Heck of a story though.

TOBY WHAN

Club: Western Australia/South Fremantle/ Roleystone JFC

Height: 183.9 cm

DOB: 09/05/07

An outside midfielder with high footy IQ, Whan is a booming kick on his preferred left foot. He predominantly played under-18s at club level for South Fremantle last year, averaging 20 disposals in 11 matches. His performances earned him a call-up for Western Australia’s final match of the under-18 national championships, while he was also rewarded with selection for Team Sloane in the under-17 Futures match last September. That day, Whan caught the eye with a booming goal from outside 50, among 16 disposals to top off a promising bottom-age season. He started this year extremely well for the Bulldogs, averaging 28 disposals (11 contested), five clearances and four tackles across his first four matches. Whan is a member of Fremantle’s Next Generation A

MATTHEW BECKER

Club: Western Australia/Peel Thunder/ Rockingham JFC/Comet Bay College

Height: 190.7 cm

DOB: 30/08/07

A medium defender, Becker was prominent for Western Australia during the under-16 national championships in 2023, standing out with his athletic traits and intercept ability. He predominantly played at WAFL Colts level with Peel Thunder last year, averaging 15 disposals and four marks across 12 games while also having a taste of the under-18 national championships with one appearance against the Allies. Becker has gone on to make a bright start to this season, including a 28-disposal, eight-mark and 10-rebound 50s match in round 3. Overall he has averaged 24 disposals, five marks and seven rebound 50s from his first four matches

BLAKE KELLY

Club: Western Australia/Swan Districts/ Caversham FC

Height: 182 cm

DOB: 03/01/07

A medium midfielder-forward, Kelly initially came on the radar with his consistent performances for Western Australia in the under-16 national championships in 2023. There he averaged 21 disposals and six marks, being one of his state’s best players throughout where he averaged 21 disposals and six marks, being one of his team’s best players across the three matches. A powerful inside player who excels at stoppages, his fundamental skills are also sound with his clean hands and neat disposal. Kelly featured in three matches for Western Australia at the under-18 national championships last year and was among his side’s best with 16 disposals, six tackles and a goal against the Allies. He also shone in the WAFL Colts during his bottom-age campaign, averaging 20 disposals and six clearances across 10 matches, before finishing the year with a strong 18 disposal performance for Team Sloane in the under-17 Futures game on AFL Grand Final day. FRED RODRIGUEZ

Club: Western Australia/South Fremantle/ Fremantle City Dockers FC/Seton Catholic College

Height: 183.8 cm

A beautifully balanced midfielder, Rodriguez’s distribution on both feet is elite. He displayed that during four games for Western Australia in the under-18 national championships last year, averaging 19 disposals including a standout game against Vic Metro where he had 23 touches. Rodriguez also brings clean ball handling skills and hard two-way running, along with overall composure with the ball. During his bottom-age campaign last season, he also played 11 games for South Fremantle in the WAFL Colts, averaging 23 disposals. Rodriguez went on to show more class for Team Heppell in the under-17 Futures match last September, gathering 17 disposals. He had a taste of senior football to start this year, playing a round 1 match for South Fremantle in the WAFL seniors, before impressing with his skillset playing for the AFL Academy side

DALE SUTHERLAND

Club: Western Australia/Perth/Caversham JFC

Height: 182.7 cm

DOB: 10/01/07

A rebounding defender who has the ability to come off his opponent at the right time and intercept, Sutherland is still developing physically but is an excellent all-round athlete whose dash from defence is a feature of his game. He has a high footy IQ, which was apparent during eight matches for Perth in the WAFL Colts last year. You might end up with complications with matching Whan and still having draft capital to look at other targets but here's a look at Swadling on the weekend anyway

----

Swadling is proving to be unstoppable at Colts level. In this game he racked up an impressive 40 disposals due to his strength and size over the footy at stoppage and his huge work rate to find space outside of the contest. The concerns over his decision making and disposal by foot seem to have been put to bed with Swadling showing a significant improvement in his composure with the ball and ability to hit the right target on the chest.

I wouldn’t be getting too excited on Robinson next year.

Getting more and more convinced the NGA draft rules will change again this year after the national draft.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that the ND is broken. Even Twomey is saying it openly on the AFLs own podcast now.

When the uproar comes as the end of the first round is in the mid 30s later this year, the AFL will do what they always do and make a knee jerk reaction the other way to overcorrect.

If Robinson is a genuine top 10 pick in 2026 I’ll be surprised if we can still match him.
I think any changes will occur for the 2027 draft and not before as the AFL will wqnt to see at least 2 years of how thier bid matching works.

Its early days but some of the previews of the 2025 draft are saying its clear the AFL wanted a system where more players would not be matched. at bidding. Its possible to match one early pick but very difficult to match more than one if that makes sense. Plenty of teams will also require owing points and even then you cant go into deficit by as much as before. I think that bid matching will be the same in 2026 to see how the system works as less bid matching will be required.

Worth a listen. Talks about Curtin, Rodriquez, etc. Everything he said was positive.

Discusses NGA prospects.

Talks up Tom Phillips and Toby Whan (both outside mids)
