NGA, really? . . . can't recall any of the northern clubs having anything to do with NGA. But if you say so . . .fine NGA is the biggest rort of all. Someone mentioned playing chess with a pigeon ha ha.
You dont recall any Northern clubs getting NGA's? FMD, get off our forum you dullard parasite before you get carded, flipping bellend.

Dude the Academies ARE the isssue. F/S at the very least is designed as a traditional thing that doesnt pop up that often. The northern academies are already putting out multiple top ten draftees a year that directly benefit teams pushing for top 4 finishes.

It boggles my brain that people cant see how badly that skews the equalisation of the league. We do NOT want the AFL to end up like the premier league where its won by 4 possible teams and everyone else can make up the numbers. Thats shit is ****ed up and I think its pretty selfish to actually desire anything like that.
It does skew the equalization, but cop it! It's far from the only thing skewing equalization. . . attack the other things and leave the academies alone, because they ARE growing the game. Completely selfish and short sighted to not see that.

that was FS . . .not a northern club rort. That rort is open to all clubs ( . . . .bar GC and GWS). Not our fault your past players are a bit . . . . .what would you call it . . . .limp?
So you ignored my point about the King and other “ambassador”money to keep them there - all outside the cap and plenty other draft concessions. They could afford to give pick 7 to Cats for virtually nothing for heaven sake.

The way the F/S picks work - paying Mickey Mouse picks to get them is as much part of the inequities as the academies.

Luckily the AFL have actually taken note of Bassats comments last year and they are fixing it. Where is it fair that the WCE finishing bottom of the ladder should not get either a fair go at getting the #1 pick F/S or not, and the Lions get him for pick in the 40s.

However you look at it - this competition is far from equal - just have to look at the FIXture and fans have had enough.

A comp that is in any way professional should not be based on the gender of any progeny and on a plucked from the air number of 100 games. FFS. It’s a joke.

I agree we rorted father son (because, as I said, fs is a rort). . . but not the academy. Leave the academies alone, we're in a market where we need to develop locals, or else we get ripped clean by rich Victorian privileged clubs
You are the ones ripping talent from other clubs. Neale, Daniher, Dunkley and Cameron. None are from QLD, but all were happy to go to Brisbane. Who have you even lost? McStay?

Waaa waaa leave the academies allooooone. No, dont think we will.

Your precious bears can go and join the nepos in your cooker state and keep moaning like babies when their free toys get taken away and they suddnely have to compete without big handouts.

Father-son, NGA and northern academies are all part of the failed, broken bidding system which has decimated the national draft. Every measure to fix it has been a partial one because the discounts are too steep and loopholes have been left that allow teams to purchase first round bids with junk picks.

This conversation has just reaffirmed why the AFL is dead to me. A Brisbane supporter coming here and telling us to suck it all up. Well the basis of the "Brisbane" Lions was the death of a foundation club. Sorry no more lectures. I'll pay my high level memberships but the league is dead to me because of that sh*t takes from other clubs.

A kid living in Queensland who can kick a football and can run and kick it well is turning their back on playing it professionally? They then can't possibly move from there because they won't play the game? That is beyond laughable. It is a a sickness. Crawl back. Thank the F that you've found yet another avenue to succeed but spare us your lectures. You were nearly dead and will be again at some point in the future.

The irony of a Brisbane support coming here, having all the info put to him and have nothing better than “suck it up”. If the shoe was on the other foot the wouldn’t stop crying. This is why we can’t stop fighting for what’s right

After yet another painful season of supporting the Saints, I’ve made the difficult decision to support another team.

This was the year we thought we would see a continued improvement in form, plenty of our kids coming along, Steele returning back to his best, and we were all hoping to see the Pou continue his breakout.

I can confirm that I will now be supporting St Kilda and also the team that plays the Nepo Babies every week.

I have no doubt this whole thing is calculated We're the obvious ones because we've already started the campaing last year

you'd be pretty happy with Freo's gritty win today then

Yeah, the salary cap concessions… when you are able to pay more than your opposition due to a merger, it sorta helps…

And if you take two teams and cherry pick the best combined lineup it's usually pretty good.

The West Cost Tigers would probably compete pretty well if they had a decent coaching set up:

FB: Vlastuin - Balta - Ginbey
HB: Short - McGovern - Duggan
C: Ross - Taranto - Baker
HF: Campbell - Waterman - Cripps
FF: Ryan - Lynch - Allen
R: Nankervis - Hopper - Graham
I: Kelly - Reid - Lalor - Maric
S: Mansell/Ralphsmith

Still have the likes of Yeo, Hunt, Sheed, Flynn, Broad, Williams, Cole, Petrucelle & McIntosh in reserve as well as a pile of young talent.

Merge the Saints with any list in the comp and we'd have a reasonable shot at winning multiple flags as well.

It's a charter plane between both clubs. I think it's the only way it's doable

Ross said it was "unique", he also said AFL officials will be on the same flight. I wonder how they arranged who would sit where on the plane, would we be up the front or would Melbourne sit up front? Or was it decided by flipping a coin, or was it based on ladder position? And where is Ross sitting in relation to the AFL officials...fascinating really.

Maybe moreso on the plane ride home ?

11k to the Suns game is further proof that membership numbers and bums on seats is not what delivers the AFL and it's "partners" obscene rivers of cash.

It's a TV product now.

TV networks are desperate for live action products as it's the only way to compete against watch on demand streaming services.

The NRL have know for a while that you don't need huge crowds do rake in the cash.

It also keeps clubs like us and North on a short leash because we have no real chance of building ourselves up and have to keep relying on handouts.

Without writing that essay-

Seaford - not self inflicted, shit situation by council, us, AFL, generally speaking all involved.

Gallagher - Head of List Management, has nothing to do with recruiting. You have recruiters for that, that fall under him.

With what money? Seaford was a lemon with shit coffee remember, and this is just narrative that the bloke growing our market portfolio was very very bad for you cause you hated Finnis. We get it, you're wrong, but we get it.

This was you missing the most obvious CEO transition known to man, you can disagree with the people but the transition kinda smacked you upside the face and called you Nancy it was so obvious. Also NGL, Lethers was an upgrade on Danny Sexton, if you think otherwise I've a Saudi Prince for you that'd like a chat.

Congrats, an actual self inflicted that was rectified pretty much immediately.

Spekaing empirically with no support doc, right-o.

I'm not the one misrepresenting things because I can't handle the ex ALPA president spekaing to state and regulatory bodies despite not once providing any sort of alternative option because ree is much more prevalent a feeling. Me, I'm with Breen and co, you hold the course and continue forward. Might end up in an icerberg, might end up going for gold, either way we're in a much better place than we were under Westaway.

No idea what you are saying but if you think that it was all outside of our decision making I think you're delusional. Everyone of your heroes has been moved on and not because they were so good they went on to bigger and better things.

Only the most confused Saints fan could try to justify our management over the last 15 years. Finacially and on field we have been abysmal. The only thing that has kept us from collapse is the resilience of our fans and AFL competitive balance money.

Have to admire it, Ross managed to get the entire football world asking questions (and then there are those playing the man, not the ball but that was inevitable) with a seemingly throwaway line. Basically he did this:

It's a gambling product, TV deal revenue runs a significant second place to gambling revenue.

The NRL would cease to exist without gambling revenue.

How do the AFL make money from the gambling companies?
They get paid a percentage of bets made on the sport. I can't remember the exact figure (or if it was released), but for instance, the AFL might get 5% of every bet laid on an AFL match. Regardless of result.

edit -

It looks like they get .09% of each bet made on the sport.
The AFL wants to increase the product fee from 0.9% of turnover for regular bets to 1.5%, as first reported by the Australian Financial Review and verified by Guardian Australia with industry sources. The draft proposal shows product fees would be higher during finals or on multi-bets, which allow punters to bet on multiple outcomes.
