We’ve finished above them for the past seven years. This season they’ve had a dream run with injuries and a favourable fixture, while we’ve had the opposite. I’ll need to see a larger sample size before declaring they’re closer to a flag in the next 2–3 years. Just as easily, they could pull a Carlton and disappear into the abyss.

They traded and recruited well last year . They've had a dream run sure but you need that for success.
I dunno about that. Their numbers were decent even when they didn't finish well, they score heavy , their defense has more stability, they've found a few players from nowhere and their midfield competes. They never get hammered when they lose like we do and they beat us 90% of the time. They're just in a better position going forward than us.

Our list isn’t perfect, but we got a pretty decent young core and aren’t relying on my older players. This is all contingent on butters staying though.

Sav, Georgiades and Bergman taking the next step have helped our profile for sure. As well as Sinn and Burgoyne cementing themselves as best 22.

We are still in desperate need of a gun small forward to replace Rioli, and our ruck situation is a bit of a mess.

I certainly wouldnt want to be Collingwood long term. Neither this, or the overall list age really say much about the quality of your young players that arent getting a first 23 game.

They'll just keep recruiting replacing their mid-30 year olds with players in their late 20s that have come from other clubs. Just like Geelong.

That is probably true, and an advantage of being a big club in the biggest market with pulling power I guess.

Geelong have always been one of the older teams but i don't think they've ever been as old as Collingwood. They're the frontrunners this year but it could go belly up for them, they are so close to the edge of the cliff. I think Geelong have historically balanced their list and transitioned out their olders players a bit better. Collingwood are like the Aussie cricket team where it looks like half their team is all going to retire at the same time.

We are both a million years away but the crows are a few less years away. That was the point I was always making here. There's more to be excited down there than here in the short term. Until we get rid of our weak culture of keeping everyone happy which starts from the top and ignoring fans like the crows used to do we are no chance. You can put all your eggs in the Carr basket but I'm not.
