Provisional 2025 Draft order

The only reason the pick split makes sense is if we’re bringing in multiple players from other clubs. Cameron + Buss + Moyle + Shellsick. Or some combo like that. Hopefully if we land the GC ruck we won’t take CDT
That is the only reason but wouldn’t pay a mid first round pick for want of them.

Be warned, we are in our current mess because we went years without high draft picks. Also our past track record of ID'ing talent is dubious.

What top picks won the 2018 flag? Kennedy ex pick 4. Maston pick 2 lol. Gaff and NN were out.

What top picks are driving Hawthorn into contention? None.

How many top 5 picks and #1 picks are at North? Carlton? Heaps.

And with another team coming in the talent across all clubs is shrinking. We will have replenshed 80% of the list after this draft.

This draft isn't a super draft with top end talent. Even the top 2 are hard to pick.

Rather get multiple shots at targets and land a mature ruck.

  • We were a bit of an exception. NicNat, Gaff, Shepherd, did a lot during the season.
  • I'm not convinced Hawks have enough to go all the way.
  • Carlton had a lot of picks but blew it on a ruck (Kruezer), a balanced mid who can't kick (Murphy), and another balanced mid who was soft as butter (Betty Gibbs). This time round they jagged Cripps at 13, Walsh 1, Cera was a high pick, Curnow was later but a gun. They have a core that is good enough. Coaching and game plan is an issue.
  • North are coming. But they fuctup with Phillips (3), Duursma (4). LDU lacks goal kicking and "I'll drag this team over the line". Coaching and game plan is an issue. But they're starting to put 30-40 minute patches of good footy together.

Our list is half built. It's just a few more drafts at getting top picks, getting games into them, and then fine tuning and trading/drafting in for the gaps.

We just have to take the best guys available and cross our fingers.

agree.
24 players 24yo and under that will be here when we have another crack at the big dance.
Add 7 draftees in 2025(3 x 1st round), 6 in 2026(1 x 1st round), 5 in 2027(1 x 1st round) and that's the core of our next premiership side.
Add the NGA/FS players who have AFL traits over the next 3 years and that sets us up.

Trade in list needs and quality as much as we can every season to replace the draftees who don't make it and list holes and the end of 2027 we should have the makings of a premiership side.
D Cameron/Busslinger/McVee/N Martin/Rivers/C Warner/Curtin and whoever fills a list need and away we go!!

Maybe we should just skip the draft because apparently everyone in it is shit.

I'm not convinced Hawks have enough to go all the way.

Off topic I realise but I have said it before.

Who are their A Graders?

They always say Will Day, so thats one, albeit a small sample size of high quality.

Newcombe?...I mean, he's good but he's really a 3rd or 4th best midfielder in a strong midfield isn't he? He's not as good as guys like Brayshaw or Serong for example.

Watson? He's got lots of talent but he's Baker-sized. Sometimes that isn't a hurdle but it usually is when it comes to pointy end of elite players. GAJ was the 'little master' and hes 12cm taller than Watson. Just saying.

They've clicked really well as a group which is awesome but is it 'top 4 awesome' or are they really in the frame for a flag before Tom Barrass's back gives out?

I don't know why people make this distinction. We almost certainly can't get any of those players, so our picks are, and remain the same place in the live draft.
I'm not sure that's true for us (specifically us).
With pick 1 we could bid on Zeke Uwland, then when Gold Coast match for him we can bid on Daniel Annable, then when Brisbane match for him we can bid on Dylan Patterson. I'm not sure if Gold Coast could match consecutive bids at pick 1 but it would be a great way to highlight the current draft academy deficiencies whilst also wiping out two teams picks immediately. I doubt the Suns would be able to match an Addinsall bid following shortly thereafter. In any event, I have little issues with us picking any of the aforementioned players with pick 1, particularly if, in this scenario, we retained pick 2 and could select again immediately. Imagine getting Sharp + Uwland/Patterson.

I think the system got changed that if they finish in the 8 they can only match bids for one or two of their academy kids in the first round

Exactly. They could be an exception, but I think they went early. Which is why I don't mind being bottom 4 for a bit longer (as in total, rather than as of today). I think our build is looking ok. Another gun mid, a gun KPD, a gun outside transition player, and a ruck. Put 50-80 games into them.....

If we did say have pick 1 & kept it

Split 2 for 8 & 12 with Suns

Hawks first ends up being 14 (Just going off last years ladder positions)

I would happily give up the second rounder currently pick 19 for McVee & plus a 3rd rounder for points to match any bids on NGA/FS’s

We would already be bringing in 4 kids with 1, 8, 12 & 14.

McVee has proven he is AFL quality, is a need for us & is still young being 22. He also has the advantage of having a few preseasons under his belt so can play straight up. He likely ends up being as good as who we would take at 19 anyway.

Hopefully the AFL give us compo picks we can use instead but if not I wouldn’t be unhappy with this.

Watching the Suns game, would be nice to get a Rowell type in the draft this year……. would be a great fit

Sharp is a our man, the perfect foil for Hewett and Harley in the guts

Lacks the explosiveness of Rowell but 3 pre seasons and 60 odd games and he will be a Josh P Kennedy type extractor who can set up plays with slick hands as well has bash up the opposition on the inside with heavy tackles. Can get forward and kick straight and is a real on field general.

Take him at 1 every day of the week that ends in y

Take CDT at 2 and turn him into a cyborg hybrid ruck/rover/ruckrover

Stop all the bullshit swapping this and trading that

Thoughts on Mason Cox? On the outer at the Pies but still serviceable. Imo he's an upgrade on Flynn and has shown that he can thrive has being the number 1 ruck in the few times he's had to play number 1 ruck. He's always had to play a ruck/forward role similar to Bailey (which he was better than Bailey at when he during his best years).

He wouldn't cost much unlike Darcy Cameron who the Pies would rightfully ask a good amount which the club should say no and hit the draft with those picks.

He will be 35 at the start of next season.
