A spectator used the f-word homophobic slur targeted at a Glenelg player in the Crows v Glenelg SANFL qualifying final at Adelaide Oval on Sunday. Spectator was kicked out of the ground.

How dumb do you have to be to be yelling that at a footy match after the recent discourse? Let along the campaignery about it.

Did you not see the marches on the weekend and the Neo Nazis there? Plenty of dumbshit people around.

Was Mitch mentioned on any of the AFL shows? AFL 360, Footy Classified, The Sunday Footy Show, On the Cooch, The Agenda Setters, The Front Bar, etc.? Or is the subject too fringe for mainstream footy programs?

Briefly mentioned last night on Front Bar as part of their 'last shout'.

The AFL have a serious problem

Even Heeney in his Channel 7 interview "pretended" to not hear the booing while watching the game on TV.

So he either watches footy on mute like a idiot or he's condoning this behaviour.

Matthew Nicks in his press conference “It’s not one for me to comment on" ahh yes it is mate it is very much for you to comment on. Weak and pathetic

You only have to read the Crows board and see that a very large section of their fans think that Rankine was targeted unfairly and that the Collingwood players who provoked him deserved to be booed.

I get that the people who live in Adelaide are far behind the rest of the country in their views and mentality, but it is still disappointing that a fanbase for a big club still has these views.

I remember people here posting that a gay player coming out wouldn't get boo'd so there is no homophobia.

Crows fans couldn't help themselves from booing Quaynor who had the temerity to be the target of a slur, even though he's straight (assuming this), can only imagine the response if he was actually gay.

For the people who still seem to think the AFL is ready and willing and able to accept and support a current player coming out its worth remembering this thread originally started following the ABCs investigation into its own policy and obligation surrounding LGBTIQ+ inclusivity.

The below is from Sept 2023

The AFLs head of HR noted that their own policy on this developed in 2000 has not been fully implemented by all clubs (which they know because of the audit they themselves did and admitted too). So they are obligated to implement this and they have not.

So again, the AFL themselves have admitted both that they are obligated to do more under their own policy which also aligns with the WHS requirements and that they should be doing more by their own position on the subject.

I stand to be corrected but i dont believe the AFL has done a thing in this regard.

So as much as wed all like to believe the landscape has changed, it really hasnt.

The AFL has done nothing.

In fact just suspending players for a word is worse than nothing.
All it does is means they won't say a word but the players are not educated on why they don't meet people from the LGBTIQ+ community, it does nothing.

This is why every pretty much every post I make says Pride Round is essential it would allow for members of the LGBTIQ+ community to be involved. There would be a focus on this topic and if players and staff are around these people, studies show how much this reduces homophobia, Yet I will get the same angry dismissive response and no action.

I think the clubs do some sort of education (noting it doesnt go far enough by their own admission).

I wouldnt be removing suspensions for racial slurs (and i dont think they actualy could anyway) but i dont think youre advocating for removing the suspension?

Not advocating for removal of suspension.

Saying that just suspending players does almost nothing to reduce homophobia. The AFL should be doing more but they are not.
If suspension changed anything, why do we have mutiltiple players suspended every week?

Yeh fair enough.

I think punishment for people as a deterrent for others is a pretty flawed concept but ive also got no issue with it (and as a punitive outcome for people who do transgress).

I think missing any amount of time for a slur that not player would be offended by is a joke. That's just my opinion. Just make it a fine for it being distasteful that's about it. It's a slippery slope now that this is the precedent.

If saying a 1 word slur (that most people have heard a million times on a sporting field) nets a long suspension then it needs to be in proportion to other acts on the field. Mark Keane's act should be 14 weeks if Rankin gets 4 weeks for calling a player a name.

Flopping like Daicos/Ginnivan/Watson etc. should be conspired bringing the game into disrepute and should be 10 weeks suspensions. That's how much of a joke a 4 week suspension is as a proportion to everything else. When Toby Green called Papley obese, that's fat shaming, that's 4 weeks right there. So for woke people, you can't select what you're woke on.

When we call AFLW, afl women's, that's 'assuming their gender', can't do that in 2025. Darcy Vescio for instance is non-binary. This should be taken to the high courts. Obviously I'm being flippant, but if you're going to be so woke on the slurs issue then you can't have double standards, it needs to be applied to every issue.

Imagine Kobe Bryant in his prime not being able to say 'b**ch @$$ white boi' on the court. I hate the way the game is going in terms of turning everyone into robots. Make it a fine for racial slurs.

Nah, couldn’t disagree more

One, you can't say suspensions haven't reduced homophobic slurs, because you don't know how often it was used before compared to now.

We only know what's being reported. You can make an assumption that, their haven't been that many reports... So compared to before... it's a massive reduction.

I still hear homophobic slurs ever week, so I'm assuming it has certainly been reduced compared to previous years.

I think it's telling that last night a large section of the crowd thought it was okay to boo Quaynor, which goes to show how many people think still gayness is wrong. And... I think it's telling, given the obvious boos that Quaynor was getting, that the broadcasters who are all I guess part of that "old culture" didn't want to address it, because like many people in this thread, using homophobic slurs is really not a big deal, and it's just wokeness policing language.

Prob should just change your profile pic to a potato and save everyone the trouble of reading your shithouse posts.

"But the player wasn't offended" as if that makes using homophobic slurs okay.

It doesn't matter if the person isn't offended, I'm sure the LGBT community who watch AFL weren't too happy about it, nor should they be.

Continue to call out unacceptable behaviour.

Everything you're saying stinks of straight white male privilege. You wouldn't know how soul-crushing a homophobic/racist slur can be and you don't give a shit either.
