The one there who's not Bella

I could have had 20 guesses and not come up with “Freo’s captain”.

Very different relationships between the derby rivals across the AFL and AFLW.

Watching the replay of the weekends game because it's a rare treat to see Eagles win games these days and at 1:18:14 made me laugh at loud. It's Dalgleish spilling the ball out to Painter who picks the ball up and bulldozers the ball forward like a rugby union player with two Port players hanging off her that gets called for a ball up while keeping her feet the whole time.

It only goes for like a couple second but that's a girl in her fourth game doing that. Good luck trying to bring that behemoth down in a couple years :tearsofjoy:

Apologies for the Sweet Jesus style multiquote!

Yeah, wasn't Dalgleish's cleanest game, but what I liked was she was straight back onto the ball a split second later either putting pressure on a Port player or scooping the ball back out to a teammate. She didn't hit the scoreboard but had 3 direct goal assists which is all you ever want of your zippy little forward.

That last video you posted of her goal assist to Bushby was /chef's kiss. Why having a passable opposite foot is so valuable.
Dalgleish was rarely seen in the first half but small forwards are like that, sometimes the ball just doesn’t come to their area or bounce the right way when they’re crumbing. She still keeps managing to find a way to pop-up and contribute to 2-3 goals a game, either off her own boot or creating for one of her teammates. She also had a passage of play up the wing, I think maybe in the third quarter, where she had a genuine 1-on-1 with a bigger and stronger opponent who was in better position initially, but Dalgleish just managed to keep scrapping after it and split the contest, I think the ball went out of bounds for a throw in. I thought that was great to see, her work rate to halve the contest when it would have been really easy for the Port player to just get control and start the ball back the other way.

Absolutely agree and didn't mean to say she was quiet/fumbly like it was a bad thing - almost prefer seeing good signs from a young player (especially a small forward) on days that don't go their way, it's more impressive mentally than when it's falling in their lap, and the fact that she continued working and stepped up/turned it around when we did have momentum is just as important a sign IMO than her goals.

Agree with most of your comments but I thought Western played really well 🤷‍♂️
I think this is the best version of Western we’ve seen yet, but I agree with the assessment. She’s growing into it year on year and starting to get some consistent moments each game with run and carry…and I still just think there’s a hard ceiling on her as a footballer.

But the pressure is up, the tackling from her has lifted, and where our list is at they’re not all going to be All Aus just yet. We’ll be taking another big step if we have drafted enough talent to hold her out of the side consistently next year (and she’s not remotely near the chopping block for me just yet if we’re doing ins and outs, if healthy she will surely play 10-12 games).

And definitely didn't mean to hang shit on Western but was almost the opposite to Dalgleish for me in that this was, I agree, a good game for her - concern more around the worrying signs that she's got that hard ceiling/isn't up to the heightened pace of where AFLW is heading even when she's getting the most out of herself in a game like this one.

The new wave of young talent is hitting the league like a freight train - if you're a tall or a rough unit like Swanson/Roux/Gibson you've still got an advantage over the young league but lighter players like Western and Hooker will need to be seriously concerned about keeping up. Hooker obviously retiring soon but yeah long-term Western I just don't see it. Agree with you HoneyBadger35 that won't likely be next year or the year after.

And on HTB; I LOVE the new rule, think it's the best rule change the AFLW has made since inception. Yes they overdo it at times, but people are criticising it based on what they do see, which is sometimes not great. What they DON'T see, which used to be everywhere, is players collapsing on the ball, followed by six stoppages in a row, and everyone at home turning off their TVs in frustration and boredom, because the players would deliberately create stoppages in the knowledge that the umpires won't penalise them. That's gone now, and the games are so much better for it, stoppages are down by a third or something huge.

Agree with you completely on the new rule. Think it's great for the game and yeah, getting rid of the pileups just needed to happen for the AFLW as a product. Was more just that pendulum style of umpiring interpretation annoyingly common that's always been around in the AFL. Thought the first couple rounds were 20% too harsh and players were refusing to pick it up - then the second the players have figured out how to play around it the pendulum swung 40-50% the other way in this last game, and lots of genuine HTBs based on the new rule weren't paid.

Also felt like we in the last 2 games were more preoccupied by it than our opposition, and a big part of our momentum shifts seemed to be getting it out of our minds. When the pendulum stops swinging think both our side and the footy in general will be better - agree I'd want the end result to still be a lot harsher than last year. Good new rule/interpretation but umpires of course adjusting and maybe felt like they were told "hey relax just a bit" and overcorrected.

Other funnies are after the match, You can lip read Bushby saying "let's ****ing gooooo!" Also some jubilant bish shouting "yeah we are!" During the team song.

Lindgren out injured, Hooker, Kavanagh, Franklin and Smith named on the extended bench.

Yep, same squad as last week besides Lindgren out and Smith on an extended bench with the rest of the emergencies. Though I don't think it matters to them where players are named, two weeks ago they named Riggs on the bench and come bouncedown she was starting at full back.

Riggs and Drennan will play, probably McGrath too. Weather looks lousy for Sunday arvo so I think Smith and Hooker or Kavanaugh might play.

Another good This Week In Football, including this topic looking at AFLW age/experience.

“Three of the four undefeated teams are amongst the youngest sides selected so far this year (Hawthorn – youngest, Sydney – 4th youngest, Melbourne – 5thyoungest). Sitting just behind the undefeated sides is the 3-1 West Coast. They happen to be the 2nd youngest selected side this year.”

Wouldn't really love to be Richmond there (bad and kind of old). Freo also look like they've kinda missed their chance.

Should be easier to turn it around in women's footy though since the new draftees are often better and fitter than the older players at the club.

Franklin in for Lindgren the only change. Don't totally love this given that it's going to be a windy, rainy day... would have preferred to go smaller.

Lol I've been saying the same thing for like three weeks. I'm beginning to think we don't even have any smalls that're out of the team right now.

Pretty important time for Franklin coming up since Painter and Riggs/Lindgren have essentially taken her place in the team.

Make or break for Franky now me thinks

Very much looking that way, she might need to reinvent herself Roxy style.

She has seen in just two games Charlotte Riggs speed past her at warp speed, in the depth chart.

The thing in Franklin's favour is she's got a great leg, can roost a set shot at distance like few others in the AFLW. Has been generally pretty accurate with her set shots too.

Perhaps having more talent around her works out to be a good thing for her game in time. She hasn't been the sort to crash packs and take big grabs but hopefully there's a role for her without that, leading forward making space for others.

Would require her to lead, unfortunately.

The Roux reinvention has been a masterstroke by all involved, really hoping Frankie sees the opportunity to be going at a goal a game on the end of a reliable volume of service, and also finally having some support against key backs thanks to Painter, Riggs, and Wakfer.

Time to get into gear plz

Port three goals ahead of the Dees at 3QT and Pies beat Sydney earlier today.

So where will the us v North GF be played? Princes Park?

Where ever Laura Kane wants North to play.

She is Norths proxy at vAFL house.
