New South Wales football - where is it at?

How does Gws compare to other western sydney teams like Thunder and Wanderes quite similar . It's hard to crack it there where nrl has 3 powerhouse clubs.

Why would a Canberra team be stupid?

It's the largest unrepresented footy fanbase in a fast-growing, wealthy city.

It's stupid Comes down
Come down to whether afl feels canberra team may gws go backwards

As long we keep the Riverina

You lost the Albury region in 2017.

To me, it would make sense to give the Riverina to Canberra as it's right next door, and reinstate Albury for the Giants.

Our Chief Minister has said the Giants shouldn't be a roadblock to a team.

North was no roadblock for a Tasmanian team, and nobody thinks about the Suns when it comes to an NT team.

The Giants should be no factor for a Canberra team.

Besides, Canberra is holding the Giants back. You can't grow in Sydney while spreading your time and resources over two cities.

Think we need canberra now as footy in western sydney needs lots of improving

Frankly, as a Canberran, I don't care. We'll support the Giants in the meantime, but we can't be expected to prop them up when there's a 20th team on offer.

But it's also not true. The Giants need to get out for their own good. The sooner they leave Canberra, the sooner they can thrive in Sydney.

Think the afl do care though hence canberra team wont be in anytime soon

100%.

The Giants need to work out what they want to be. At the moment they have NFI about their identity. They are all over the shop.

They were gifted a huge chunk of Sydney by the AFL to call their own. Instead of working that area and devoting fully to it, they've been all over the place - playing games in Canberra, backing Manly (of all teams) in the local Sydney AFL comp, pulling out of Blacktown, the women playing at Henson Park, holding functions in the inner city, and more. Very little to indicate they are full on about the GWS area.

I've got a PR brochure from the AFL about the proposed Giants team, it's not dated unfortunately, but it's likely 2009/2010. NONE of the preceding was mentioned in it - it was all GWS, GWS, GWS. But clearly between then and the launch of the club, the AFL panicked and went for the quickest possible fix rather than having the Giants knuckle down and service the GWS area 100%. And that has seen the somewhat nomadic club that now exists.

The original vision that was sold to the people of western Sydney has turned out to be a fraud. The AFL and the Giants need to work out at some stage exactly what they want the club to be. Because at the moment they seem to have NFI. A good step would be to get out of the ACT asap, contracts notwithstanding of course, so they can focus on the Sydney market - whatever part of that market is their target of course (it's currently not 100% GWS and may well not be going into the future).

So you're just ignoring the part about what's actually best for the Giants?

The Giants are also playing a dangerous game in Canberra.

As I mentioned, we're happy enough to support them for now, but if they hinder us getting our own team, many Canberrans won't be so happy supporting them any more.

I've been a member since 2016 and I've attended as many games as I could (including a few in Sydney). I'll be handing in my membership and rarely attend another Giants game if they're the reason we don't get a team. And I know I'm not the only one.

Think of what happened to North crowds in Hobart. The same will happen here. The AFL will have wished they got the Giants out.
