Oh right… that makes all the difference…
It does. Brady didn't want to lose someone in their prime to a big club that could literally fix the wide gap between their veterans holding it together and young players that aren't proven. Players 'want' to go many clubs, but they are contracted to play for the club as signed.

You really need to understand how broken the game has become in terms of equal competition. Collingwood tried to play dirty and we flung the shit back at them.

Leppitsch didn't sound to me like a bloke who thought he'd won anything by 'dislodging a captain'

And as for 'arm length', Nick Daicos comes out of it looking like a complete Pratt

Comes out nowhere near as bad as the dickhead who initiated trade meetings without his manager, as the player returning to Arden St.

This wasn’t some sort of psi op by Collingwood to cause disharmony in an oppo camp.

They offered what they could, it wasn’t enough, end of story.

If Jy has any sort of character, he’ll rock up day one of preseason, knuckle down and win back the respect of his teammates. If you’re an optimist you might even think this humbling will be good for him and he’ll make the wing his own next year.

We don’t have to accept or do anything.

But surely you can recognise what Collingwood have done here?

Their passing interest, with absolutely nothing outlayed, has caused a leadership spill within the football club, undermined the current captain, a 2 x B&F winner now starts from square one with the playing group.

I’m sure if the shoe was on the other foot and we did it to * we’d be pissing in each others pockets.

They don’t get a deal done - “oh well”. Jy Simpkin barely moved the needle for them and their offer reflected that.

We don’t get a deal done - “We now need a new captain, we need to address the elephant in the room, need to manage Simpkin all year, will have this narrative follow us all next season” etc etc

How are North a stronger football club following this than 10 days ago? We aren’t.
The captaincy either this year or next was always going to be on the cards, just bought it forward.

I wouldn't be to bothered about a trade falling through either. Plenty of others have knockled down after a thwarted trade attempt. Probobly papley the most obvious.

I think Spargo is a good free get. I think moving on Moose made sense. Not getting bullied by Collingwood and helping push them off a cliff is nice. Essendon stubbornness destroying their chance at a fast rebuild and hawthorn missing all their targets.

I think this is the best trade period in recent memory.
Definitely trumps last year.

Exactly as they did.

Hence why people are so fast to white knight for the club as very strange.

My criticism is for Jy Simpkin and the situation, not what the club did.

Gonzo is hardly on my Christmas card list. But I think he did the right thing by our club, something I didn't have a lot of faith in him to do.

I also think it was an important reality check moment for our senior group, you do not call the shots and there are consequences for not being team first players.

I just don't think this was a good outcome for Collingwood, the side in their way of a premiership just got stronger and they wasted the trade period not getting Simpkin. I think they played the hand they did because they expected Brady to fold, be manipulated by the media, etc. it didn't work and other clubs would have picked up on that.

It has to be something that continues going forward, but it is at least a positive step. Having the reputation of being soft is worse than losing out on whatever for Simpkin, it has already cost us too much and we had to change and that change isn't going to be easy or without an opportunity cost.

With us upgrading our 4th pick in the maley deal to me it indicates we want to draft 4 players. Unfortunately this means cooper would end up delisted along with tucker phillips and payne.
Do we have any more spots on the rookie list that we could retain them with? If River Stevens is really off the pace, he's cost one of them a list spot when we could have rookied him if that was his level going into last year's draft

Has it occurred to you that just by chance we may have sent a very powerful message to our young group of recently drafted, hopefully very good players of the future, that our List Management team will make the decisions on our list and not some other overly entitled football club?

Why do you think I disagree with the club rejecting the proposed deal? I don’t.

It doesn’t mean we win though.

We are the ones left with the publicly humiliated player, who 2 weeks ago was the face of the football club that we now have to babysit through preseason commentary regarding his commitment to the football club.

I think this has been a very pleasing result for not just us but the competition

In our case we stood up to an entitled Collingwood and they didn't get their own way. Similarly, without any love to *, I'm very glad they said the same to an equally entitled Hawthorn. To a lesser extent, the Saints said no thanks to Geelong, who I think will rue the fact that they missed out on Marshall.

This may well be the dawn of a new era, where battling clubs hold their ground against the predators and good players on long term contracts, are forced more often to stay with their original clubs.
It’ll be temporary but could result in a couple of clubs being deemed to be “too hard” to actually get deals done

Outside of Spargo no major contract or list spot damage done. Huge improvement on last year. Now just use the two 2nd rounds picks on list needs in the draft and we got ourselves a 12 month break till we can self sabotage again.
I think we can still trade picks leading up to the draft so there's still the potential to do something stupid. It just doesn't come with a player wither coming or going attached

I think this is a positive. We can move past Jy as Captain and if he does t play well then his career will pass him by quickly.

I am very confident that Jy will knuckle down, do the necessary work, as he has done in the past and be a very good contributor to our on field performances.

But if he doesn't and instead chooses to sulk, then his inevitable poor performances will be his undoing. No-one else will want to take on a player who chooses his selfish interests over those of the team.

This is a team game and no-one should forget that.

I wouldve preferred to shed Jy's money and get some picks in the door, personally.

Some sort of fake pride doesn't help the club win.

The net result of trade period has been a below average Spargo. Fail.

How to contradict yourself in a few sentences.

You agree we should have rejected the deal, which is in my view a win for us - we have stood up to a bully and that's a very big win in my language.

But then we don't win because we are left with a publicly humiliated player.

Not sure what else we could have done in these circumstances, but oh well.

I think the perfect result would have been the club being adequately compensated for being destabilized and then not having to deal with the elephant in the room for the next 12 months.

But, that’s just me…
With you there. Adequate compensation - like a decent player to make us at least not go backwards on that spot for the next couple of years plus a decent pick to invest in the future - and most people would have packed Jy’s bags for him. As that wasn’t offered the next best outcome is where we are, but it’s not perfect. Maybe Jy will be better for us when he’s not captain and after having all this dissatisfaction aired, but it’s not a good situation.
