This thread is becoming increasingly popular, and to keep some sort of order, we will have some….

Rules of engagement:

1. Bring valid news or links to Twitter posts from notable sources. Don’t post screenshots or “some bloke just said on SEN” or what some “trade whisperer” has posted on a Facebook page.

2. Ignore what other team boards are putting up as trade offers. Don’t quote or bring them here either.

3. Don’t post “buckle up” for the lols.

4. If you can’t say anything nice about Worpel or CJ, don’t say anything at all. The continued slaps and backhanders are just going to be deleted.

Copium thoughts I have:

- in two years there will be a dearth of young talent for the 18 clubs, pretty good time to stock up

- same as I said when we got rid of Titch/JOM - there’s something to be said about bringing in a group of players through via the draft at the same time from a team morale/connection perspective

- we’ve been pretty good with drafts in the last 5 or so years, especially in that pick 10 to 25 range.

The shot of TP blasting our team near the end there and Roughy just saying "nothing else we can do" tells it all. Glad we didn't cave and now it's the Bombers mess to clean up. Merrett is a great player and I'm sure he won't let it impact him winning their B&F again (I mean who else is there that could?) but it'd be delicious if he just cracked it and gave up

It’ll all come out in the wash over the next few days. After discussions and a handshake agreement between Rob FK, Matt and Mark, Essendon were given a narrow window to move aggressively, with West Coast and Richmond still active in the building. Then the board stepped in, beat their chests and vetoed the deal, a move that not only hurt the Bombers’ position but left their own recruiting team frustrated and dejected. Yet, remarkably, the internal spin is that they won.
Wait, so we actually offered 4 firsts and it was rejected by the Essendon board? Lol they really do want to cut off their nose to spite their face.

Hopefully this does come out in the media and refutes what the Essendon mouthpieces have been sprouting over the last few days.

What age DOB do I need to do to appease you I'll go through and add another 15 names if it makes you happy sir 😂

I just used Draft Guru and it has a bunch of later birthdays as a younger as they take the mid year point as the cut off,

That's fine mate. I think you just cherry picked to suit your point. Most people just talk about 30y.o.

Which makes you wonder what the hell the saints are doing. Apparently they have a unicorn kid who will be a ruck, they still have Marshall, and they are paying $1.7m for the most expensive ruck ever 🤷‍♂️
And they reneged on Leek Aleer.

It would be great to see both Aleer and Hustwaite turn into stars and make the two most confounding teams of the trade period - Saints and Bombers - regret their non-decisions.

Not sure Petroro was blasting the Hawks? I read it as just blowing up about the situation as it unraveled, but he was probably also pushing to take the extra step/offer more.

I can’t wait for him to speak. I was hoping he’d do it last night while he was still steaming, but he probably made the right call to sleep on it 😂

I don't reckon he will blast Essendon, he knows his client needs to go back there so you cant be throwing more fuel on the fire now

Sorry for the intrusion but you're absolutely right. It's worse than that though. I agree with a lot on here that Rosa and co wanted to do it and were vetoed by Welsh - the moment he came in as president during this period I worried that would be the case. People getting caught up on it being pick 10, 22 and say 30 next year also forget we got Zach at pick 26 so who cares what the numbers are - you hope Rosa does a better job picking players than Dodo did and move on. Really set us back just to strike his own ego (Welsh). Also, Zach should have spoken publicly way earlier and I think TP erred by getting the Hawks to delay giving their first offer - may have been different but also Welsh still probably would've screwed it anyway.

a big point lost in all of this is 3 1st round picks would have given your recruiting team the ability to work so many other deals, move up this year, bank on future 1sts next year with teams that my slide. Literally pick the exact talent you wanted to build your list and 5,6,10,19 and 2 futures 1st could have done that. It's a mess of a situation and decision made by someone who hs put his word/ego before the best thing for the club.

If we legit offered 4 firsts. Pretty much tells us how important we thought adding a player like Merrett was to landing flag 14
The club wanted to add 2x A-grade mids this trade period, and considered anything less a major disappointment, so I can see why in a moment of desperation we may have been tempted to salvage something.

That's BS I used DraftGuru who has someone like Barrass who turned 30 during the offseason October 8th and played this entire year as a 29 year old as not 30 for the 2025 season. Applied the same measure at all clubs.

Going by your starter about it being vetoed by Welsh, I think that just shows he was never going to accept a deal, no matter when or how Merrett/Petroro made his request. Bloke told them in the middle of an attempt to convince him to stay that he wanted out, and that still wasn't enough. The Bombers room at the end of the trade period looked more deflated than ours did which I thought was telling.

I'm wondering if there will be any form of lashing out by Merrett and TP in response now.

This is not the draft to trade up into. This is the draft to have multiple bites at, preferably in the first round. If we are going to the draft I hope we move back from 10 and have 3 late firsts, rather than 10 and 22.

Or, we just get out of this draft entirely and trade into next year. Have heard from multiple people involved in many drafts in a S&C capacity that this is the weakest in over a decade.

Yep, was obvious what went on. Cal Twomey was dejected knowing the offer was accepted by the list manager, Hawks room had hugs and smiles, then Rosa gets on the phone and it all came crumbling down. Their worst move since not giving up 2x 1sts for Dunkley.

Merrett has to go back, he won’t lash out until August next year when their season is over again.

TP will likely steer every player he manages away from them for a decade though, and avoid any of his other players there signing contracts.

I imagine many other player agents will do the same. Players won’t look kindly on it either, they want to be treated like a human not a pawn in an ego driven power move.

But hey, welsh got to feel like a big boy.

The commentsary has been that Petroro was mad at Hawthorn for not adding a player. I read it diferently. I thought he was frustrated but not with Hawthorn. The text that Damian Barrett refused to read out on air seemed to be "Tell Essendon to go and F themselves".
When Petroro was in the Hawthorn box, he was mostly sitting and chatting. There were handhshakes all around afterwards.
When he was in the Essendon box he stood and talked and did not linger long.
I would love to know his thoughts on the whole saga.

We're much better off rolling the picks into next year and then attacking the trade and FA market with a heavy arsenal.

Maybe we bring in a kid or 2 this year, but it's gotta be about adding those A-Graders next year for a crack in 27.

Petroro is on record saying that our first offer was an amazing offer ("he'd never seen anythingh like it") for a 30yr old... And that was for 2 first rounders...

And then we increase the offer to 3 first rounders, so I hardly think he was blasting Hawks offer.

What was the narrow window to move aggressively about? Package up picks to go up the draft order? Nothing that in theory should have scuppered the in principle agreement? Just wanting to clarify it for myself. Thanks.

Sensible intrusions are always welcome here. :thumbsu:
You may be right about Zach and Hawthorn both acting earlier, but I agree Welsh wanted to veto it unless it was sheer insanity from our side.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Montagna said everyone around us got better lets evaluate.

Brisbane Allen maybe Draper maybe.
Geelong nothing.
Pies nothing.
Adelaide nothing
Suns Petracca yes
Freo nothing
GWS Oliver maybe

Brisbane the worry now Suns clearly soon. Forget Merrett or any other scum player and forget butters. Start targeting Lions and Suns players have to start being squeezed out so get ahead of that and make a big play in 2026 so we control who leaves not them.

Also stop worrying about the media (I started by referencing Montagna but it was to make a factual point). The media cheerleaders are all the scum have. They just cost themselves a really good deal to rebuild a dire list. Well played the leadership of the last continues and long may it continue.
Every time that chihuahua starts yapping about Hawthorn the opposite invariably happens - all good.

What St Kilda did to Aleer was brutal. Had him on the hook for months and then bailed at the last minute.

At least we triued bloody hard to get Merrett.

But nobody is reporting on the saints, just how nasty the hawks are.
