If you read the rule change you would know that is going to be a throw in and not a free-kick in those situations.
When I read the story, there was no elaboration. Moreover, if it’s true that it will result in a throw-in, then the elaboration is wrong in stating that it is "bringing the men's game in line with the AFLW's 'lasso’ rule”, because in AFLW, that situation regularly results in a free-kick — at least if last disposal was from a Freo player.

The wording literally says that is illegal. If a player blocks another player from touching the ball then a throw in is meant to be called.
There’s nothing wrong with not caring to watch women’s football. People like what they like. Taking media reporting on the intent of rule changes as rock solid evidence of what happens and what will actually happen, though...

There will always be a grey area of sorts, anytime you incentivise something with a free kick players will adapt. In this case I expect players who could make it to the footy will pull back earlier and not quite get there but it will be in their hands for a free kick moments later.

The AFL wants the ball kicked more corridor, the spoil over the boundary is still allowed, so nothing will change in terms of ball movement, just when the ball is miss kicked we will have weird circumstances of players diving to contact the ball before it goes over the line like used to happen if the player kicking out from a behind hadn't left the square.

The really weird one will be a player diving for the ball going over the line, boundary umpire signals the ball is over, player attempting to contact the ball then does, ball is pushed away, umpire should pay a fifty in that circumstance for time wasting.

Not book related, but how the hell can the police believe they have enough evidence to charge Prestia whilst he is claiming he wasn't even present? Seems too extreme to be a case of lying surely.

If he was there and was involved but there isn't unimpeachable evidence proving it then he can claim to not be there at all, similarly if he wasn't there but someone who has no reason to lie, or no ability to such as your mobile phone tower signal recognition, did in fact place you at the scene - even if they are mistaken, you can and will be accused of being there.

Rule number one is always to not talk to the police without your lawyer there to tell you to not talk to the police because even if you are innocent and you make no mistakes in how you retell the events (which is unlikely), should there be any testimony that disputes your statement and that person can be put on the stand with no motive or gain for deceiving the court you will be having the rest of your story questioned as a result.

It wouldn't be outside of the realm of possibility that a football player called the Human Meatball by Brian Taylor just thinks he can deny his way out of something, and unless there is evidence to the contrary he may be right.

There's probably video footage somewhere that will settle it, we live in the surveillance era. It would be a really bad look for Dion should he spend a period of time doing his best impression of The Room before his "Oh Hi Mark" moment when the video rolls.

Thats not true, you can kick it long down the line and it bounces away from players and over the line without being touched, like what happens in AFLW all the time
Players don't plan on making skill errors. Unintended outcomes should not influence decision making.

I don't have an issue with defenders taking their time to kick it in after a behind. After all, the clock has stopped and we're not losing any game time. What I do have an issue with is the forward being given an entire 30 seconds (1 fortieth of an entire quarter!) while the clock is running to take their shot on goal. Where's the fairness here?

I hate the current deliberate/'insufficient intent' rule. It's ridiculous with only handful being paid, some when it isn't even deliberate, while scores of other deliberate actions (such as spoils and allowing oneself to be 'tackled over the line') are exclusions. Anything to remove a stupid meaningless rule where the umpire is literally meant to read a players mind should be welcomed by everyone.

Who said skill errors? I'm talking about kicking to a lead down the line, sometimes the players are too far away and would retrieve it on the bounce but instead it bounces away, maybe its just more common in AFLW due to kicking lengths but it happens all the time

Crowds already call for deliberates so they'll get use to cheering for the lasso kick turnaround. They might also get to cheer the scenario in a close game when the ball looks like going over the line, and a player dives and gets a touch to it before it goes over making it a throw in, instead of a kick to the opposition.

Elite reference.

It isn’t clear how long the umpires will wait before they throw the ball up without nominated rucks. It says immediately in the afl article, but I wonder if they will give 5 seconds or more? What if one ruck is 20m away and the other 25m and they both nominate - will they wait? Anyway, doesn’t it make the job of umpires more difficult by introducing another area of discretion? Need to watch AFLW to see how this works , rucks better run back to centre immediately and beat the ball being moved by the umps

May lead to some fitter and faster rucks needed lol

If you don’t chase the ball then the opposition must be lazy by letting you have so much space to just rollover . If you block an opponent getting it to force a free it isn’t paid according to the rule . Just throw in . So if players man up then they fight for ball one either gets its and is tackled or runs away with ball or if it contested and spills out then a throw in ,

I think just getting rid of the ball”intent” analysing will be great

I think the stand rule (staying inside 5m) could get complicated. I don't think umps are very consistent with judging distance, so they've added the task of determining whether a player has moved out from an area inside 5m.

Plus the player won't always hear the instruction to stand when the umps are away from the action, and then the player who might mark the ball will often want to play on immediately - so I think there's going to be a lot of grey areas in applying that rule correctly.

I haven't seen an explanation of how this rule will apply when there might be more than one opposition player inside of 5m after a mark is taken anywhere on the ground. Do they both have to stand?

I just hope you aren't pushing for a return of Chris Cuddly ;)

I was yelled at by enough coaches to cry later and run now that I don't have much patience for grown men needing a cuddle to perform, on the field for clarity. There's room for empathy and understanding, but sometimes discomfort is the teacher and the coach has to be the instrument.

The umpire will be told yell stand rather than police outside 5, it will be easier for them - once stand is said then it will be black and white, and movement will incur and infringement.

If the player plays on immediately, umpire will call play on and not stand.

AFL players are very used to some direct feedback. Less so with the more modern younglings, but they aren't cuddled about it.
I've also come across a lot of managers now in that 25 to 40 age range who are just absolutely crap at giving feedback and holding their staff accountable (then stone cold lie that the younger generation can't take feedback)

I think Chad Warner needs to look at his coaches contempt and lack of empathy for any players he sees as being not worthy (with Eagle arrogance)
When he looks to his next club in Freo
Cox has always been a knob (no pun intended).

I love that movie so much. Went to a screening in Sydney a couple of years back with the guy who played Mark and got a signed script and Blueray.

He was promoting his new movie, it was way less funny than The Room.
