100% pretty much my assertion before trade week was that we should buck the trend and keep getting bargain price youngens with upside into the team as opposed for blowing our load (draft capital) on 1 big fish. As much as Zanker would have benefitted our forward line immediately, handicapping our future definitely isn't worth.

This is where Freo have gone about it the wrong way. They recruited heavily for the now and didn't have the depth or (IMO) Game plan to compete with the big dogs. Sure, they'll stay there and abouts in the conversation for finals for a few more years, but they're not breaking the top 4. Then their rapidly aging list is gonna see them likely fall off a cliff before rebuilding.

Almost pointless to do otherwise in the now, given the Roos.

Bit of a shame that Carys D'addario went very late to St Kilda. Not a shame for her obviously, but it would've been nice if she was still available for the pre-season draft. I suspect we will take two girls to replace Rowley and Western.

VFLW has shifted their comp to have more overlap with AFLW (so they start in mid May now). SANFLW has also moved to a later start (mid April) whereas WAFLW will still start in late March. Overall I think the addition of a pre-season draft is good (as opposed to just random signing of players to replace injured players) but on AFLW they were speculating that the pre-season draft will be somewhere around late April to early May, so there wouldn't be any VFLW games to scout, although there would be several rounds of WAFLW before the draft.

This was the one unfortunate thing about drafting one West Aussie in the previous two drafts, we couldn't get them down to the club right away, Painter and all that showed up in Feb/March. Drafting Russo she can just come straight down and get familiar right away.

Forgot about Tildi Sergeant being another drafted West Aussie..she came and left in the blink of an eye.

Sounds like we didn't think she'd still be on the board at our pick.
Absolutely love that we picked her when she was though.
Also love her sass.

“With our first pick, we were hopeful but a little nervous that Mia would still be available given the number of academy players in the mix,” Loxley said.

From our list manager in the post draft washup. They were hoping she'd get through.

Paywall break of the article.

But as soon as Monday night’s draft started, she instantly regretted her decision.
“I felt really in the dark about everything,” Russo told CODE Sports. “Everyone in the room was feeling the same.
“It added so much to the drama and the nerves. I was nervous and scared the entire day.
“I really wanted my name to be called out by West Coast.”

It’s an outcome she started manifesting earlier this year after watching West Coast defeat Gold Coast in the opening round of the AFLW season.
“I was watching that game, standing with some of my friends, and I remember watching the girls run out,” Russo said.
“I genuinely got goosebumps when they played the theme song. I just wanted to run out with them.

They should burn all their Carlton gear in the back yard. I’ll bring the lighter fluid.
Her old man’s phone has (maybe had now) Carlton wallpaper

I’m like mate, you best be changing that, GO EAGLES 😝

Looks like he’s all 🦅 now

This girl could certainly become a favourite!

I’ve no doubt she will. She’s a great kid.

Can be prone to a turnover over by foot and maybe get a few frustrating HTBs early in her career as she did at WAFLW level but will adjust and be a menace forward of the ball. Tackles like a manic as well

Western, ACL aside, is the player type she’d be replacing early in her career.

One thing you won’t see is her training ethic. She is 100% all go all day. Never backs down and runs hard in each drill.

Can’t wait to see her run around in the Blue and Gold, she gave us many wonderful memories at WP.

In a few years I reckon Russo will be better than Lewis (she's certainly much better at this point as a junior), will probably take over as our key inside mid at some point, letting Roberts move a bit more to the outside. If we can just get Rentsch and Painter more on the ball, in the next few years, we'll have plenty of inside grunt, it doesn't get more physical than Painter, Rentsch and Russo.

Maybe JSC will be the player who helps Painter move into the middle. And who knows, if Rowley makes a fast recovery she might at least get enough training in to play some defence like she did early last season, and maybe THAT will let Rentsch have more midfield time too.

And then I rate Rowley really high too, which is why I'm so pissed she keeps getting injured. Patterson will probably be a depth-midfielder, or may get squeezed out as each new draft produces new great kids - as is about to happen to Bushby, Western and probably Britton too.

But the midfield group's potential gets more and more exciting.

I don't really see Rentsch as an on-ball player, at least as far as what best suits her. She strikes me as more of a burst player off half back or on the wing; I'm not sure that she's a natural prolific ball winner (and she's got lots of other great attributes that make her valuable). Whereas Painter is already big and broad through her shoulders; I think she's really well suited to the role (plus speed is pretty far down on her list of positive attributes). Painter averaged over 20 disposals her last three years with her club team whereas Rentsch only averaged about 15 disposals in her draft year.

The main problem (if you can call it that) with Roberts is that she's pretty much the best player wherever she plays, and unfortunately cloning technology has not reached a point where we can field an entire team of Ella Robertses. You're right though, part of building up the talent and depth across the board is to free up the top-end players so that someone like Painter doesn't have to spend too much time at forward or Ella doesn't have to do all of the work at the coal face and can be more damaging out in space or up forward.

Personally I think JSC might be the one who is utilized to give us drive from half back. Looking at her highlight package and the various write ups about her suggests she's just as prolific at half back as she is half forward. Daisy holding steady on her reputation to draft for players that can play multiple roles. Looks like she definitely can play forward to release Painter into the guts as well. The ultimate Swingwoman.... I miss Adam Hunter 😢 RIP.

Described as a damaging and impactful player, the 176cm Skewes-Clinton played as a defender and forward for Greater Western Victoria the past two years in the Coates state league.
Strong in the air and below her knees with a strong physical presence, Skewes-Clinton established herself as a defender in 2024 averaging 12.6 disposals, 2.1 marks, 3.4 tackles and 2.3 rebound 50s with the occasional foray into attack.
But she crept into the forward 50 more often in 2025, finishing with 27 goals in 16 games across both seasons.
“That became normal – back and then forward – I loved it though, to be able to play so many different roles, I definitely learnt a lot from it,” she said.
“Being able to be versatile and play everywhere you can always be involved.”

Hey AlphaSheep. What are we doing with pick 84 and why didn't we pick Eloise Mackereth on draft night? Im.pretty shocked she wasn't selected. Or do we go for the best tall available at the pre season draft? Would love to hear your thoughts/digest your insights.

We didn’t have the list spots to take a third pick at the draft.

Whether we participate in the PSD will depend on whether we’ve moved any players to the inactive list through injury (eg Western or Rowley) or personal (eg Drennan or McDonald).

Ahhhh, I see. I feel like we've derped by not pre emptively delisted or set at least ONE of the aforementioned players onto the inactive list for next season given the unlikeliness of Rowley or Western to participate at all. Also, absolute radio silence on the situations of Drennan and McDonald...

RookieMe says people don't like MacKereth's lack of defensive pressure. Seems daft to me - you can teach defensive pressure. What you can't teach is athletecism and skill, and MacKereth's got both. Given how rare natural forward talents are, any coaching setup worth their salt would surely back themselves to teach her that part of the game.

But what would I know, they've got these video setups where they analyse every inch of a player's movement, probably they've seen stuff any casual watcher will miss. It's still annoying to see the AFLW missing out on a rare offensive talent. Maybe she's a victim of small list sizes - previously clubs would take players on as 'development projects', and teach them what they're missing after drafting them. Now, with lists so crowded, they don't.

I agree, perhaps......perhaps we should mount a gruelling guerilla marketing campaign? Start slapping stickers with a QR code to her highlights reel and snippets of our forum posts about her all around MRP and every eagle owned HJ's...

More broadly though, I think this REALLY highlights how hamstrung all clubs are by a prohibitively small list sizes...... They all appear to be so Incredibly cautious to take in "project players".

It sucks for League entire AND the talented kids not getting into the system to develop in an elite environment. There's such an overwhelming expectation of the young draftees of AFLW to perform within their first 2 seasons it's actually ****ing absurd.
