I was watching a Brisbane Bears vs. Geelong game from Round 4 1991 at the Gabba (the first ever AFL match at the venue) and noticed something very strange - and so did others by the comments - with one of the Bears' players jumpers.

The player in question is David O'Keefe, and his # 31 jumper for Brisbane is the same design as all the other Bears (gold jumper; maroon yoke, BB insignia, numbers & trimmings) but is a short-sleeved design kind of like a tee-shirt or a rugby league jersey. Two of the Bears - Brad Hardie and Matthew Campbell - are wearing long-sleeved jumpers and the rest of the team is wearing standard sleeveless AFL jumpers - but none of them a jumper like O'Keefe's. I'm not sure of how to post Youtube videos, but if you look up this game you can see the jumper at the 48 minute mark.

And I have no recollection of seeing a short-sleeved (as opposed to sleeveless) standard AFL jumper either before this, in other games in the early 90s or in all the years since. Hawthorn did wear a rugby-style jumper one pre-season in the early 2000s (2001?) but never in a home and away match to my knowledge.

If anyone looks up the video please say what you think, and also if you have ever seen a similar jumper in another game.

Hasn’t he just chopped part of the sleeves off and made it a t shirt style?

Didn’t Hawthorns Richard Loveridge used to do something similar back in the day ie chopped part of the sleeves off.

With O'Keefe's Brisbane jumper, it didn't look to be the case - not sure about Richard Loveridge. I'm not sure if the strange Bears jumper might have been some sort of prototype that never took off?

Anyway, wouldn't it breach the AFL uniform code if a player took to the field wearing a jumper that had been altered or deliberately damaged in some way? For example players have the option to wear the standard sleeveless AFL jumper or the long-sleeved variety. But if a player deliberately turned a long-sleeved jumper into a tee-shirt like jumper and wore it into a match, would this be allowed by the AFL?

I have a memory of Adam Yze getting fined for this at some stage? I don't think it was quite t-shirt sleeves, more 3/4 length.

The Bears did have long sleeve jumpers and I am going to suggest O'Keeffe cut the long sleeves off, at the point where the two bands wrap around the arms. Here's a few more players in the long sleeve. There were a couple of Hawthorn players who also also cut the bottom half of their sleeves on a long sleeve jumper in the same era.

The match above was Richmond's first win over the Brisbane Bears.
The MCG was a real slop. Geelong won 4 matches in 4 weeks there - 3 of them eventual finalists.

I love the jumpers of that era. For some reason, the imperfections were a thing of beauty.
