Shit pitch. Ball jumping all over the place.
It really isn't though.

It doesn't have variable bounce, it doesn't have lightning pace, nor is it bouncy like the WACA.

It just has some sideways movement like a lot of county cricket matches would do each season in the UK. Test batsman should be handling this better.

Yeah bounced more than others and got worse towards end of the day. Jacks a dismissal would’ve got a lot good batsmen out. sideways movement a fair bit more than usual.
20 wickets on a mostly nice day.

I read that about half the deliveries had significant deviation off the seam, which is quite a lot more than usual. It's harder to play than balls that swing in the air as the reaction time is minimal.

This is the result of years of all of the flat decks put out for 20/20 to benefit basemen and promote high scores in that format. This was a perfectly reasonable first day test pitch, but modern batsmen just don’t see enough of this, which is why any sort of lateral movement results in 20 wickets in a day.

It was the most seam movement in the last 10 years, yes batsmen should handle Sean movement but this was too much

Nothing wrong with the pitch.

From BBC site ..

Analysts CricViz calculated 48% of the deliveries seamed more than 0.75 degrees on day one in Melbourne.

In the last decade of Test cricket in Australia, only four Tests have seen a larger amount of high-seaming deliveries on the first day.

The overall PitchViz rating of the day's play at the MCG was 8.7 out of 10 (higher number equals more difficult to bat) - making it the second toughest day-one pitch in Australia in the past 101 Tests when there have been 40-plus overs played.

Stats showing the ball moved ≠ bad pitch.
Bad batting techniques and a prevalence of hit n giggle shit cricket.

0.75 degree deviation is about the width of a bat when the ball gets to the crease. Some balls won't deviate that much and some will deviate more. If the ball is coming off the pitch at 120km/h it gets to the crease in 0.2 seconds, so not enough time to react. Batsmen are having to guess so it takes good technique out of the equation.

You blokes whinging over >0.75 degrees seam movement when cricviz states that 2010-16 in the county championship the average was 0.58 degrees and 2017-19 it was 0.71 degrees. Seam movement should be expected in 4-5 day cricket. Not lambasted because white ball cricket has ruined techniques.

Those of us that watch county championship matches and/or highlights can see this is nothing out of the ordinary. It's just test batsman are used to flat tracks and can't handle this type of pitch.

In fact, our bowlers failing to reach 0.75 during the 2023 Ashes tour was noted as being historically low.

The pitch is difficult, but nowhere near as bad as some are making out.

The issue with modern batsmen is that many of them look completely out of their depth once a pitch has a blade of grass on it.

The likes of Waugh, Hayden, Vaughan and Atherton would still make a decent score here.

You’ve gotta love the modern sports fan. The pitch hasn’t caused 30 wickets to fall in four and a half sessions of cricket. Shit batting from both teams did that.
There was some shit batting but plenty of seeds including the ones that didn't get batsmen out.

Boland bowled one to Crawley that started on middle and seamed away to go over about 6th stump on the leg side. Commentator said the deviation was 2.2 degrees. No batting technique can cater for that.
