the Oil has a lot to do with it…just wondering whether the fact 8 million Venezuelans have left the country carries any weight as well?
These things look to be true:

a) It's about oil.
b) Maduro is a bad, bad person and nobody is sad to see him go.
c) The US doesn't care about Venezuelans - they demonise and attack them.
d) This is an act of war which is illegal in all sorts of ways.

Is Iran's problem their leadership or is Iran's problem that they refuse to bow to western (mostly USA) imperial will?
From an outsiders view it seems to me that the leadership has failed to move with the times as it were

It has failed to adapt to the significant strides in the global reach of the internet. By banning it or limiting it they are creating the internal recipe for protests.

I have no idea of how they are bending to US will - apart from the nuclear issues.

Think you missed the point.

I was arguing that this wasn't going to be a warning shot against the likes of Russia and China.

More that it would embolden them. Because just like the US they are the bullies and will use power that includes military to achieve whats in their best interests.

The reason that the US doesnt strike either country is because of the reality of MAD. Small countries are no match to the bullies.
Okay, fair enough.

I don't think Russia is capable of doing much more to be honest. China tho, that's a different story.

Why are you a pro-Maduro apologist?

I don't think it even matters half the time for the common person who is in charge.

You could hardly build a credible case that the working (or unemployed) poor in the USA have it much better than anywhere else.

The USA want Iran on a leash because of oil and because of the power they have over the Straight of Hormuz.

The USA does not give a **** about their own people - they are hardly going to act in the interests of the Iranian people.

Iran doesn’t have good leadership.

If Iran did have good leadership that wasn’t going to be pro-US then the US would probably try to meddle with it.

I think the analogy is Cuba and a successful Bay of Pigs in an updated form. Instead of an actual invasion, a surgical op to take out a regional pebble in the shoe. He was not our sort of dictator, like Castro wasn't. I've seen reporting that Maduro is considered as too destabilizing for comfort for the powers that be.
I don't see Trump as a key part of this scheme, more the Deep State with Rubio as their pointman. Some pundit and someone upthread mentioned sphere of influence, the Monroe Doctrine. A Dem POTUS might not have wanted to green light this sort of op, and in Trump they found their guy. The drugs for sure, and probably the oil as its the dirty kind are fig leaves. The build up and sinkings, theater. We'll see how fast someone ascends the throne there. Done quickly and then there may have been plans for this for a long time.
Edit:I should add that the campaigner will probably get a bump in the polls for this.
Do you remember that failed "mercenary" op in Venzuala sometime in the last year?

Not gonna bother trying to search for it now with all this recent shit polluting the search.

From the New York Times -
“Karen Budd-Falen, the No. 3 at the Interior Department, didn’t disclose a $3.5 million water-rights contract between her husband and the developers of a Nevada mine, records show.”

Watch Venezuelan graft and corruption be replaced by yankee graft and corruption.

I like to say this very thing about Australians... anyone that introduces themselves "owning multiple properties" as some kind of win over others, when owning property in Australia requires the "least amount of brainpower", similarly to watching grass grow, is a sure way to admit you're dumbest campaigner in the room. Congratulations for outing yourself.

only on this sub

if it is so easy, why not do it yourself? because you lack the brains to earn the cash to fund it. and the discipline

about a Warlord criminal who has an IQ lower than high schooler.

yeah sure dude degree from Wharton, worth billions. But yes he is really dumb

Typical lefty. Someone who has a different view to you must be stupid

And our "outsiders point of view" is an entirely western imperial point of view. It is propaganda to advance western ambition.

How has the USA "moved with the times"? Their fat glutinous population is entirely hooked on sugar, fentanyl, debt and violence.

Any criticism of Iran is just name calling at this point.

Someone asked about the 2024 attempt

In September 2024, the Venezuelan police captured and arrested three Americans, two Spaniards, and a Czech national carrying sniper rifles and other munitions to allegedly assassinate Maduro.[153] In a public statement, the Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello held the CIA and Spanish intelligence responsible for the coup attempt, calling it 'not surprising'. The minister shared that they had arrested yet another US military active-duty member, Wilber Joseph Castañeda, with evidence from his cell phone linking him to terrorist attacks during the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election.[154]

Democracy is a crock of shit. Where does it actually exist?
Of course democracy doesn't exist for you, cause you are Iran's and other caveman countries' apologist.

So change regime to a pro us one, loot the nation for oil, trickle down the profits, have a destabilised Venezuela in about 10 to 15 years, time and bang regime change once again.

At least there is ISIS in Latin America, just cartels

i’m glad we have a dove in office! no wars, and peace across the world!

Different is we have an uncorrupted electoral system. Preferential, compulsory voting and an independent AEC tells us that despite a rapidly diminishing primary vote, Albanese Labor won fair and square. Simply no comparison.

In the US there are literally millions of citizens who want to vote but are prevented from doing so.
Yes just like russia.

Having signed up to AUKUS and US nuclear subs that may never be delivered, meant that we handed over the sovereignty of our national defence to a despot.

Xi will be looking at invading Taiwan pretty intently now knowing the US has effectively given him the green light with its actions in Venezuela. And the likelihood of military conflict in the Asia Pacific region before the end of Trump's reign is a distinct possibility.
