Career averages are only a small part of it, I don’t care who was better 6 years ago.

Green has barely played a shield game for 5 years.

All I’ve heard all summer is about how Webster is in poor shield form so shouldn’t be picked, but now we want to switch to career averages?

Green can go back and show he’s still able to produce that level of cricket because we’ve seen only flashes of it at test or shield level for half a decade now
No you are saying you want Greenie to go back to shield cricket and dominate ...okay I get that

but then you want to replace him with a player who is not dominating in Mcsweeney ?? that makes no sense

I want him to go back and find form at shield level, I want him to be replaced by who I think is our next best.

I’m not a huge Sydney fan but he has a solid recent 200 and it’s slim pickings

Not sure. Hookes played a lot of his test career against the Windies at their pomp. The smashed jaw from Andy Robert’s during WSC also really affected him. He was never the same but at his best he was a swashbuckler.
Gussie Gilmore had a great World Cup in ‘75. Was a brilliant talent (much more than Green IMO0, but was a very unlucky cricketer. Could have been anything.
It was more in reference to their sheer talent (which was undeniable) not coming through to its full extent at Test level, as per the original comment (paraphrased).

And imo it applies to both. Although, as you say, each had their moments and there were extenuating circumstances.

Greens footwork has always been slow and is such a nervy starter - he is now so worried about nicking off he is just pressing hard forward .
Ploughed a 6 then gets caught in the deep , no transfer on weight and his back foot in the air on both shots .
Needs a serious technique overall .

Hopefully bat another hour and half - balls starting to.go through the top
Can see a deficeit of 180 simple being too much and England crashing

Has anyone noticed Green has a higher batting average than Stokes this series?
On the flipside, Stokes has taken 15 wickets at an average of 20 compared to 4 at an average of 60 for Green.

God CA are pissweak. The sensitivity to criticism isn't just the players...
CA are quite lucky that England haven't strung together 2 days of good cricket this trip otherwise there would be a lot more criticism over their selections/selectors and they'd probably only be allowing in Fox Sports and some guy named Dave with a cricket podcast with 28 subscribers to interview anyone.

Sure, but nothing is said about Stokes and his batting this series.
I think it has attracted some commentary.

I mean, to be fair (and I am not fan of Stokes) he's been carrying an enormous burden this series. He is busting his arse on the field with the ball, he's captaining the side and he is often the public face of the side as well.

I'm not the slightest bit surprised that an aspect of his game has buckled because of it. And, even then, he has played two innings where he has showed far more application than certain far more talented team mates.

Incidentally, this is the first Test in this series in which he has come to the crease with the score 200+.
Prior to this match: 4/94, 4/76, 4/176, 4/121, 4/71, 4/177, 4/16, 5/158.

How long does form last? We're not playing a test for a fair while.

he averages 52 in the shield for his career

Mcsweeney ave 37 for his career and is ave 31 this year thats not good enough
Pope averages almost 60 in the County Championship. Domestic dominance doesn't always lead to Test dominance.

Hell with the declaration. Bat, bat, bat
I would be happy to see a third new ball being taken.

Grind the bowling attack into the ground, and see if we can get Tongue and Stokes to their centuries.

Sure. Now compare bowling averages for the series. :)

false equivalency
both players bowling roles in their respective sides is different..

It's like saying Green should have more wickets and better average than Boland

They may not have the same workloads but they are both being picked to perform as an all rounder in the team.

One is offering significantly on one end and the other isn't.

What would Green’s bowling average be if he brought himself on for cheapies and bowled himself into the ground to martyr himself for the cameras?

Green would go back and dominate the shield. You just know he would. He has already.

I know we’ve been saying this for a while now, but he just needs to get a couple of big scores and he’ll be away. Settle him in a spot and give him the confidence to go out and dominate. There’s just too much talent there to work with.

Also - please just let him bowl line and length rather than using him as this Neil Wagner donkey bowler.

Another poor series or two and I will revisit this.

May not have gone on with it but was involved in a 70 run partnership so selectors will see that at as a tick
Well considering Green came in after Aust lost 2 quick wickets to the new ball, still trailing, out of form and under huge scrutiny and pressure, thought he and Smith forged a crucial partnership.....it allowed Webster on return to come out with the new ball 26 overs older, Aust in front, allowing Webster to come in under less of a pump and build another important partnership with Smith....hopefully a match winning one. It's tick for Green from me as well.

Really annoys me how they use his bowling. He is good enough to be a genuine start up quick if he just hits the top of off.

lol

thanks for the wafer thin analysis and in depth cricket knowledge
Stokes is used as front line bowler. Bowls with a newish ball, attacking fields. his role is to take wickets

Green plays as a 5th bowling option. Filling gaps here and there. 2 overs before tea. 3 overs of short stuff with the field out..come on to bowl before the new ball with an old ball. Defensive fields. In Adelaide he didn't bowl until about the 60th over (from memory)

but sure its exactly the same ... hilarious
