Opinion The 'Carlton related stuff that doesn't need it's own thread' thread Part 3

I find this depressing from one perspective Soap. While many posters want to bang on about the lack of ability in the group, we need to contemplate the lack of standards coupled to where we reached in the seasons prior to last.

I know he had some off field issues, but look at the career of Nick Holman. Jack Carroll is “killing it” off HBF in the preseason and should have been developed so much better. Even the likes of Stocker paint a sad picture despite the contempt he gets from posters here. I am not super concerned on Silvagni and Curnow, but geez I am reticent to watch TDK under the new rules feeding NasWM.

Nick Haynes needs a shout out too regarding lifting the group. Paired with an earlier import in Newman, it is likely they have been highly relevant in the rise of our young defenders who look more advanced of the kids in the front half. Looking at a potential Best 23, it is discouraging to see reports that Ashton Moir still has the habit of running with the “cap catchers” in fitness drills. He will surely miss in favour of (likely) Elijah and the highly admirable Cooper Lord when considering the hotly contested final spots. (With H, Skull, Kempy, Hayward and the smaller options, Ashton has to force his way in the pecking order). Love what Ashton can bring, but he needs to genuinely earn it on the track, I am sure he can get opportunity from performance in the reserves, but needs to elevate.

The entire group needs to lift and/or maintain training standards. I hope Wright and our footy management group are stressing this to all and sundry, and end of year contracts are reflective.
Interesting observation. To me, it seems like in recent times former Carlton players have rarely kicked on elsewhere. I can't actually think of one, outside maybe Martin. In most cases, the club has made the right choice about who to let go, although we'll see what happens with the 2025 departures.

Culture culture… with 5 of our first round team being potentially ex Swans (no more GWS v2) the on field direction and standards I’m sure hoping will rub off fast to the rest. At least our coach looks a hell of a lot fitter than theirs.
Meanwhile at St Kilda:

If their is an AFL rule put into place that is intended to benefit 17 AFL clubs and as an unintended consequence benefits the Carlton Football Club then that rule will automatically not apply.

Correction, we were given access to two guys from the State Leagues. 🤣🤣🤣

But the point is both Gold Coast and Carlton were well entitled to priority picks - but because Gerard Whately and a few others had a sook about Carlton being entitled to a priority pick the AFL came up with the ludicrous priority access to two players in the State Leagues for both Carlton and Gold Coast.

The very next season the AFL couldn't fall over themselves fast enough to grant Gold Coast a priority pick.

Others with shorter memories than me forget that in 2006 we should have had a priority pick at the beginning of the First Round in the Draft rather than at the end of the First Round - because all the AFL clubs had a whinge about Collingwood getting Dale Thomas and Scott Pendlebury (one of whom was a beginning of the first round priority pick) 2 years after appearing in a Grand Final. So in 2006 after we had qualified for a beginning of the first round priority pick (under the qualification rules at the time) the AFL changed the qualification criteria prior to the draft so our priority pick was at the end of the first round - we ended up with Picks 1 (Bryce Gibbs), 17 (Shaun Hampson) & 19 (Shaun Grigg), when really we should have had Picks 1 (Bryce Gibbs), 3 (Possibly Travis Boak or Joel Sellwood) and 19 (maybe Shaun Grigg or Shaun Hampson).

The AFL were controlled by Ron Evans and Andrew Demetriou at the time who still both believed that we escaped lightly from the penalties they imposed on us after the the Salary Cap Saga ( if * can refer to the Drug Scandal as the Drug Saga - I'll refer to our Salary Cap issues as a Saga as well ;) ) and were still irate that we managed a Priority Pick in 2003 where we got Andrew Walker - so they contrived to stitch us up in the 2006 Draft.

That is all.

They will never admit it but there has been either a very strong anti-Carlton agenda at the AFL or a very unfortunate string of decisions that were harsh on Carlton. A smallish one that sticks in my mind is the zero compensation when we lost Jarrad Waite to free agency. Only cost us a pick in the 30s but it was just so openly biased.

What a specious argument that Whately made - “the list is their own fault” - of course it was you nonce - every clubs list is their own fault - Norths list was their fault too - but I didn’t hear you bleat when they got assistance, like a particular geographic protesters of recent times you pick and choose your causes 🙄

Blame mick Malthouse. He had Waite languishing in the twos. Of course his value was low.

Know a former north board member who was on the board when Waite moved, Waite’s North contract was very low cost, but still better than what we offered him. Added, they gave him 2 years and we only offered one. Imagine we were hoping for a compensatory pick but our management stuffed up (again) by lowballing Waite. Age is a factor for compensatory picks, also. He actually played some very good football at North.

Probably not a popular opinion on here but am not into the “AFL is out to get Carlton” paranoia. AFL isn’t a hard beast to work out - they want money and as many people watching the game as possible. I also believe man landed on the moon.

There is no doubt that the AFL from the Salary Cap Saga in 2002 ( where CEO at the time Demetriou is on record as saying the AFL went easy on us) to moving the priority pick goalposts in 2006, did not assist us to any level that they have assisted other struggling clubs in the 21st Century.

They may not have “been out to get us” but they certainly weren’t “out to help us”.

Remind me again when Kemp has looked good as a forward

No Curnow, No McKay, first run up forward really. I think every Blues supporter enjoyed him up forward that day. And yes, I know it’s West Coast, but he looked good. 1:45 in is also a great leap and grab

In this video, Cripps is asked about Jagga and his eyes light up - he says he feels inspired by him. He said he's the only kid he's seen come through the club other than Walsh who was ready for the big time day one. He almost accidentally called him a star, but changed it to "very good" (paraphrasing, can't remember as I watched it earlier today)

Jagga hasn't played a game yet and Cripps is giving him wraps like this. I am beyond excited for him.

There were glimpses of what Kemp could do in our run during 2023 - and I think I can remember saying that he reminded of Brent Crosswell's ability in the air (not just because he was wearing Number 17) - provided he can regain confidence in his body - I think the extra responsibility he will have up forward will be (or should be) the making of him.

With Harry McKay, Hudson O'Keefe, Will Hayward, Brodie Kemp - we have quite a diverse range of marking options up forward and with Ainsworth, Evans, Williams at ground level we have players that can play front and square.

The missing piece of the puzzle is mid-field connection and forward line set up - I hope Josh Fraser can and has addressed that during the pre-season planning. :thumbsu:
