Opinion St Kilda - Where are they at? - Part 2

Agree. It's not like the Mcrea's and Scott's of the comp aren't going to have a much closer look at him. If he can get through the kind of attention he's about to cop then maybe terms like Genuine Superstar can start getting bandied about by Saints fans. Lyons himself is going have to do a better job to counter as well.

I've enjoyed watching this kid's rise so far. He's the only reason any neutral could be bothered watching the Saints over the last couple of seasons.
Nas has finished 5th, 5th and 1st in our b&f across the last three seasons and been the player that runs with and releases the ball from the backline for most of that time prior to moving to the midfield.
I'm pretty sure opposition coaches have been aware of him for a while.

Saints may have had some shit performances over the years but we are a legitimate Foundation club with our own identity.
You’re not even a legitimate AFL club mate you’re 50% manufactured by the AFL after ripping off a legitimate VFL/AFL side in Fitzroy. You ditched that embarrassing Bears shit faster than anyone could look ..
You simply shouldn’t exist it’s a joke and for all your flags you’re still propped up by the AFL with both $$ and cheap player handouts.
Stick to your backward country songs after a goal …just wait till you hear John Denver’s new release “Thank God I’m A Country Boy” ….came out last week you lot should have it up there in 10 years or so ..
You better call head office Teflon, an ‘illegitimate’ club has won 5 flags since the year 2000-that’s not good for the comp. We shouldn’t exist! Your club would have the same amount of premierships in the last 50 years if it didn’t exist. 😬 You might want to have a look at AFL handouts over the years before you start gobbing off about ours. You might also want to do a bit of reading about the mighty lions financial position before you get that wrong as well. I like the Saints but the constant crying is a bit much.

I didn't say that coaches weren't aware of him. There is a big difference between awareness and coaches considering the Saints as an actual threat then applying Stop Wanganeen-Milera and You'll Stop The Saints type strategies all season. Just ask the Magpies about the amount of effort that goes into ensuring Daicos stays off the chain, not just each match but over the course of a very long season. I haven't seen any sign yet that Lyons is capable of this during his most recent coaching stint.

The math would suggest that there would have been probably 80 or more players in the comp that would have had the ability to finish top 5 in St Kilda's B&F in your timeframe so perhaps not the best measure of this players value.

St Kilda isnt against it.

They just want people to pay fair price for it. Same with academies. No problem with them existing. Just make sure clubs are paying a fair price for it.

Fred Bassett said he wants them ‘abolished’, so yeah St Kilda are against fs and academies.

With regards to Silvagni, I don’t think anyone rated him much prior to last year, but that’s probably because it evidently never occurred to anyone at Carlton that he might be good in the sort of role his father made the Team Of The Century playing.

Once they settled him there though, he looked right at home, and did such a good job that at one stage early last year he was rated by CD the 2nd or 3rd highest rated key defender in the comp (to that point of the season), and he had about the 6th-best contested defensive losses percentage of all recognised key defenders for the year.

When it looked like we were getting Aleer last year I had a look through some of his numbers in comparison to our own (2 years younger) Caminiti, and while doing so, I noticed some interesting ones for our old mate Josh Battle, who had just made the All Australian team. Then some even more interesting ones for Silvagni.

AA Battle:

Intercept marks per game- 104th
Contested marks pg- 189th
Spoils- 92nd
Intercepts- 26th
1%ers- 83rd
Contested defensive losses %- 20%

Silvagni:

Intercept marks pg- 39th
Contested marks- 31st
Spoils- 22nd
Intercepts 27th
1%ers- 20th
Contested defensive losses %- 16.7%

So while he might not be flashy, there are a bunch of numbers that suggest he was doing a very very effective job.

And if having him there frees up either Wilkie or Tauru to just attack the footy, it’s likely to benefit us significantly.
I love Battle and he was a gun for us but it is worth noting (as I’m sure you know) that we turned Battle into Tauru and Silvagni and yeh were paying a fraction more for those two than we would have to retain Battle but that’s the risk you take for the athletic profile and potential of a Tauru.

Silvagni is a stop gap, he’s just better than a lot of people think.

It is possible that this is what he was doing. Maybe it was directed at some of his guys that are out of contract?
I don’t doubt he was, I think Fages comments were part notice to his players, part distraction to his clubs current culture issues but he could (and should) have done it more broadly so he didn’t sound like a premiership coach chipping a couple of players.

For the record I loathed Ross “nepo-babies” comment before the GC game too (which I still think was a pre emptive excuse for the inevitable loss we had coming) so I’m happy to acknowledge it happens.

Got a source for that?
This is the guy with reading comprehension issues, the one who thought Riewoldt was demanding an apology lol.

Stick to reading Cat In The Hat

Maybe Ross the Boss should have let him go to Geelong then if he is so overrated.
He was referring solely to his ruckwork (ability to win and use hitouts- apparently we were 18th in both hitouts and hitouts to advantage last year), but now that we have TDK, we won’t necessarily need Ro for his ruckwork much anymore, and can let him roam between the arcs in particular, being a real pest in the air.

I couldn’t personally give a flying fig about what Fagan said and wouldn’t have given it any oxygen, if I was at the club, and honestly I think it will be good that he did say it.

Nas came out within 24 hours and kicked 5 goals in match sim (something we’ve never heard of him doing before) and you’d think it will just give TDK that bit more motivation, to make sure he lives up to the size of his contract.

So thanks kindly for that Fages.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, that is his, and what someone else thinks about me or us is none of my business.

So there’s no need whatsoever so be offended or upset by it, or take it personally. It’s just someone’s opinion.

I did find his opinion on Nas pretty bizarre though. Talking about him like he’s some promising up-and-comer, and not a guy who’s outright 3rd favourite for the Brownlow.

He didn’t get to experience “beast-mode midfield Nas” though, so perhaps once he does, he’ll be just like Sam Mitchell was, when he got to experience that guy first hand, and was powerless to stop him. “I knew he was good, but I didn’t realise he was THAT good…Even when he was on the bench I was worried about him”.

Righto. So when opposition coaches are playing St Kilda that weekend they put work into 75 players who aren't playing in the game.

Unless you’re a teenage girl the excessive hahaha’s coupled with the term “so cringe” is easily the most cringeworthy thing in this whole dumpster fire of a thread.

I believe the youf of today would call this thread "low aura"

Whatever that means

On behalf of St Kilda FC and our magnificent Saints supporters I would just want to thank all the opposition supporters on this thread doing their bit for the greater Sainter cause.

St Kilda's relevancy isn't reliant on your contributions but we will fondly remember your support as our profile continues its stratospheric rise and your posting numbers drop off after we cement ourselves in the Top 4.

Was talking to someone about this last night.

I rate NWM, but the comment to me was that he's played at the uber elite level for half a season, and in the absence of much in the way of opposition attention given St. Kilda weren't much of a threat.

Let's wait until he can prove he can do it for multiple seasons, with significant opposition attention, before we have him in the company of Bont, Daicos and Cameron...

The fact he’s had to play on a direct opponent until being released shows his talent.
Not sure other than Danger and Bont a player in the AFL is capable of doing what NWM did against Melbourne.

Folks, this thread is WEIRD.

I’ve just removed about a million posts that were either way too personal, way too petty, way too far off topic, or all of the above.

Stick to talking footy. Bonus points if you can relate it to the thread title.

Fair call.

Amazing contested mark and conversion, but if you think any of Bont, Danger, Daicos, Callaghan, Butters, and i could name a dozen more players, would be left to run into the forward line with no opponent within 15 metres of him with 20 seconds to go and the game on the line.... well you haven't watched much footy.

NWM will not get that luxury ever again. Let's see how he goes.

Could just ban about 4 lions supporters and it’d be fine too.

Because that scenario that Nas orchestrated is such a common one
