Was it too much to ask for him to just be able to get through the game uninjured and for everything to go well? Was it too much to ask for our young players to remain uninjured and provide us joy? ffs
yes, we got our flags and destroyed the AFL. we are destined for 50 years of sadness now

Very disappointed to see Sam’s re-injury. Those that got involved in the draft thread last year will know that he was a favourite of mine and I was very keen for him to get to the Eagles.

I was surprised he didn’t have it stabilised after his injury last year.

Muddiemoose it’s actually more of a risk not to operate, if it is unstable and it dislocates he risks further significant injury to an already compromised joint.

The four week window to “see if it improves” is very unusual. The chance of redislocation after it happening as an 18 year old is almost 100% without surgery, nothing I’ve seen that the club has released indicates this is any different to a typical case of shoulder instability.

In any event I hope it heals well regardless of how, he’s a wonderful player to watch.

The club has sadly become very "smoke & mirrors" around a lot of things, but especially injuries. Likely as they have made a situation where they have set themselves up to only be able to sell "young hope" to the supporters. This reads like the exact same type of crap they have been putting down on Smillie & at times, Lynch too.

It would be good if they just told us what the problems are for once. Even if it is bad news.

Forget the drama and the rock-throwing at the club for a minute. A Tiger cub is injured and probably needs surgery and rehab. Don’t any of you pricks want to show Sam a little support? How about we wrap our arms around the kid and wish him the best.
They don't hate Sam, they are more questioning the improved finess guru who was supposed to be superior to Loui the butcher, yet it's as you were.

not sure what all the fuss is about.... if he was 26 and it was 10 years ago and he was one of our top 6 players and it was mid year and we were finals bound, they would just jab him up and drop a couple of tablets
and he wouldn't miss a game. he has a low grade AC joint sprain he will be right. i wonder how many times judd was jabbed up. different game now, it is so fast and you need to be able to hold your tackles and do them handballs that you have to elevate your arms over your head.

Can someone post that gif of that woman getting angry at knocking stuff over ….. I can’t find it

WTF didn’t he get surgery in November last year? Incompetence
Surely our fitness staff would be following directions from leading surgeons and shoulder specialists. They would not have the power to over-rule specialists.

Bingo, but people refuse to see this.

I'm not sure that the club would have 100% say in what happens to an 18 year old in regards to surgery. if he was my son, my family would decide with surgeon/specialist/club information what happens to him. a 4 week period to assess the right path to take for the kids long term future doesn't seem unreasonable.

Our club is so dumb now. Do it once and do it right. Another poor decision from us again.

Came with the injury, spent the summer strengthening it and training with the non-contact vest up until 6 odd weeks ago. Not sure how you can fix that in 4 weeks unless the most recent injury is quite minor with scans showing minimal damage.
That is the case apparently.

Still....he should've had the surgery last year rather than kicking the can down the road.

Our club is similar, but to be fair the provision of medical information in my view should be at the discretion of the player.

What I do think is reasonable is a best estimate of return to football, regardless of injury.

When he initially injured the shoulder the decision was made to pursue a non operative pathway. This wouldn’t have involved anyone at Richmond as it was well before the draft and would have been done in consultation with a surgeon as well as Sam and his family. He may have been dead against surgery even after hearing the risks.

Without knowing the exact details of this injury, if it is a recurrence of glenohumeral instability then it would be odd to not operate or to take a wait and see approach when we know the outcomes.

If it is something else like an ACJ etc then the discussion looks a bit different.

Easy to say in hindsight but considering surgery is inevitable, he probably should have had it when he first arrived to the club or his junior club should have just got it out of the way.

Hopefully the strengthening process goes well and he can play some footy this year and be booked in for surgery at the end of the year so that he is ready to get back into it after Christmas.

saints took ball over Judd because of concerns about his shoulders.

Like a lot of players who entered the league at that time, Ball’s potential was massively reduced by getting Ostietis Pubis, which at the time was a league wide problem caused by over training young bodies.
