Brian Cook- Carlton to win at least one flag next 5 years

They were supposed to win it this season 30 years since their last.

No. Just no.
Yep.

Rewind to 2022, they were meant to be smack bang in the middle or a 4 to 5 year premiership window in 2025

But instead they are back to planning for 5 years down the track...

You're right as Voss is a premiership captain and I remember Mark Thompson being in a similar boat in 2006 he's also a premiership captain.

No one gave Richmond a chance at all it's the hindsight heroes who say they were always destined for greatness. Even during the 2017 season when Richmond finished top 4 people labelled them pretenders because of their 0-3 record against the top 4 in the home and away.
Richmond had a number of first round picks coming into their prime including Prestia , who had just been brought in .
Had just traded in nankervis .
Also had bloke called Martin who in 2017 had one of the greatest ever individual seasons ever seen .
Riewoldt wasn’t yet 30 , reasonably injury free and had previously won 2 Coleman medals .

A couple of years ago I thought 2025-27 was the window for the Blues with Cripps, Curnow, Walsh, Weitering, TDK, McKay all in their prime with a good support cast.

Unfortunately the support cast has wilted. Martin never delivered. Cerra never progressed past a bit player. Williams a disappontment. Saad on the decline. Both Kennedy and Setterfield not making it.

Then Curnow and TDK leaves. McKay is horribly out of form. Cripps back is cooked for carrying the team for so long.

The window has quickly shut with this group which is a real waste. Russell and Voss are a big part to blame for wasting it, and for that the pressure should have gone back onto the president and the board for these appointments. Seems the Pres responsible shot himself in the foot with a dick pic but Carlton supporters should be livid at what happened on his watch.

The fans went through so much pain with a full SOS rebuild. 4(?) coaches and the current one is there to win a flag which won’t happen so he’ll be turfed as well. The last of the Sayers appointments.

2000 was the last season when we were legit flag contenders imo.
I agree with this.
Carlton should have played Essendon in the grand final in 2000, but choked horribly against a young Melbourne side in the qualifying final.

Carlton beat Melbourne by 98 points when the two sides met in the 2000 home and away season, so the qualifying final result was a complete and utter shock to me.

As for the 5 year plan by Brian Cook, it has failed just as badly as Carlton's previous 'blue print' 5 year plans that they announced in 2011 and 2019.
Do you think Graham Wright will implement a new 5 year plan in the near future?

Dees were in a mid year slump when that game happened and were barely holding onto a top 8 spot, but won 8 of the next 9 heading into the finals with their only loss by 1 point to the reigning premiers and fellow top 4 side North Melbourne.

Carlton on the other hand lost 3 of their final 4 games heading into the finals including losing to bottom 3 side Port Adelaide.

Melbourne were the form side heading into the finals.

The ol boys club thing just doesn’t work.
Consider this for a second - SOS split the picks in 2019 so 11 and 60ish became 17 and 22.
In doing so he missed out on Kozzie, Bergman, Georgiadies and Day so he could go with Kemp and another dude that played 2 games.
Horrendous decision making.

And better still another club has seen this and got him to be list manager so they can have a limited bunch of plodders too.

Carlton were going brilliantly until they played the Bombers in a late-season blockbuster, Kouta got injured and they lost and they never got that momentum back, still waiting 🤣

Carlton were a seasoned and mature side, while Melbourne were young and inexperienced.
Carlton did lose form once Koutoufides did his knee in round 20, but most people still expected Carlton to beat Melbourne in the finals.

Yeah I get outside people’s expectations of a seasoned team vs a young team.

Same thing was said about the Prelim vs the Kangaroos but Melbourne beat them by 50 points.

From barely hanging onto a top 8 spot to storming up to 3rd spot.

I was confident heading into the qualifying final, I don’t think it was just a choke job from Carlton, Melbourne were in serious hot form.

I disagree. I say 2001.

Essendon was on top of the ladder and I remember Carlton beating Essendon twice both times in the regular season.

Both wins were close. Both were 3 goal wins.

Sheedy decided to use interesting "tactics" in that last game of the regular season vs Richmond.

Had Richmond lost, Carlton would of gotten 4th. That means Essendon being top faces 4th placed Carlton in the qualifying final.

No one talks about this though.

Carlton had a 3-0 record against the grand finalists in 2001, so it would have been interesting to see a finals series that year where they finished top 4 and didn't suffer key injuries in their round 22 game.

Brad Green's goal in front of the old Olympic stand in the last quarter is still burnt into my memory, I was sitting in the top deck and was right behind it.

One of the best Melbourne games I've ever been at.

Form changes though. Carlton's 1st half of the season was slightly more consistent then the 2nd half.

Saying that... Brisbane was like a middle side in the 1st half of 2001.

Brisbane were 6-5 after 11 games in 2001. They ended up 17-5 and 2nd spot when the regular season ends

I remember Brisbane being 4-5 after 9 rounds and then going on a 16 game win streak to win the flag.
