short being in defence is diminishing the roles of those around him because he demands the ball so aggressively. remove short and i guarantee the output of guys like banks and brown would increase markedly, we might even hit a few targets out of the backline.

It's a shame that Short is playing well?

I assume you mean that it is a shame that banks isn't on fire .. as yet.

I'll back hm in. he has the ability to be very good, and will get there again.

Might have been a bit over hyped last year. Just an average player atm.

Banks missed much of the preseason so has come in a bit underdone. Played only the second practice match from memory so only two weeks in front of Vlastuin, who is a shadow of last year so far.

His game relies on run and carry, and you can't do that until you are fit and firing like last year. He is so much better at the receive because unlike Short who often calls for the ball behind or sideways, he receives it running forward, hence his very good metres gained. Give him time to find some form before the boots kick in.

Besides he is averaging 20 possessions per game, 21 last season, so he is not stinking it up.

Problem is, Sol. We are that bad and lacking in certain areas that any small sign of highlight is being inflated to keep spirits up. Mere single acts are taken as evidence of future greatness.
Heck, we even have one poster inflating stats that make Rioli or Player X the seventh or eighth best in one certain category as reasons for him being good.

Actually Rioli is not a great tackler, that was his old man and his uncle (Cyril).
He is a great run-down tackler, but for someone who is acclaimed for tackling, he has a total of 8 for the season.

It's just their defense mechanism. Catastrophic thinking - allows them the copium of "being right" if something goes pear-shaped with a Tiger player or he doesn't come on as well as we'd like, but then still getting to enjoy the success and triumphs if he does come good, with little more than a cheeky "glad to be wrong" if ever called out later on.

I bet they also habitually tip against Richmond in the office tipping comp too, even through our premiership years, based on the same premise.

I hope that's right anyway. Either that, or they'll spend 90% of their footy-following lives really not enjoying too much about it at all.
