I do think Reef is overrated by many. He seems to be an example of the adage- the less he plays the better he becomes. Too many see him as the messiah when it comes to solving our issues in defense as far as talls are concerned.
If he could be a Jayden Laverde-type tall general defender, that would be okay. I highly doubt he will suddenly become Moore’s successor.

Jeez it’s hard to know what to make of Swadlings game. I don’t know if I should be pleased that he got 10 intercepts from his 27 disposals, or infuriated at he went at sub 60% DE… 🤔

In fairness, has pretty much been played as a high half forward / flanker…

Buller, Teakles and a few others have been the targets tonight.
There was no excuse for that madness at the start of the game. He marked it 20m out directly in front, all he needed to do was walk back and kick the goal, instead he lost his head and inexplicably played on while under pressure.

Is prindable injured? How does he have almost the lowest disposals out of the entire game?
I was thinking the same thing. He's either coming off a very low fitness base (hard to believe given his reputation for professionalism), or looks like he has osteitis pubis where he can't get around with any power.

That may be the case, but McStay's flaws and Membreys flaws are also there, yet coaches seem to show blind faith in them?

West has way more ability than both and IMV I don't know what the coaching staff are waiting for as physically, he is a man. Endurance will take time, but I don't see McStay chasing down opponents or Membrey either.

West, IMV, would be a good bet to win one-on-one marking contests if we clear out our F50 and leave him 1 out with his direct opponent.

West is a better set shot than both McStay and Membrey. He is arguably a better contested mark than both. He is definitely smarter than both, more agile, agressive, better decision maker and field kick. But yeah, just because his aerobic fitness isn't as good, we'll stick with McStay and Membrey I guess? Very uninspired coaching.
I appreciate the efforts of everyone is who is posting tonight. Anyway can somebody tell me who is the current VFL coach? Thanks.

In terms of talent in the VFL;

West - composure, aggression, contested marking, field and goal kicking, agility, defensive efforts

....daylight....

Parker - composure, skill, run
Cochrane - height, composure, run

Concerns;

  • Swadling - accumulates a lot as he clearly has good endurance / speed - HOWEVER - major issues with composure, decision making and skill execution. Turns it over regularly.
  • Prindable - needs to work on his fitness and agility. Looks very slow and doesn't get to enough contests.
  • Buller - strength and fitness need work. Seems to go to ground too often for a big man.
  • Harrison - low footy IQ. Athletically gifted, but if he's not receiving the ball, he's not doing much.
  • Sullivan - concerns are that he's one of our best at VFL level!
  • Howes - admittedly being played out of position, but does look like he's running on railway tracks, with limited agility.

Will not make it:

  • Ryan - too casual, indecisive, doesn't do enough (similar to Allan).
  • Jiath - list clogger, does nothing of value.
  • Smit - no idea what to do on the field.
  • McInnes - shows limited ability and honestly not enough given it's his 6th year on the list.
Can't disagree with too much. The first year boys get a pass though. Re Swadling, Prindable, plenty would have said the same things about Dane Swan. No that I think they will reach those levels, but they deserve a bit of time.

I wish they would give Parker an extended run in the ones. To me, he's the one who shows a bit. I think he can be a player.

I find it hard to judge in the VFL sometimes. For some guys, its harder down there and they come good in the ones. They kept playing Maynard early when he looked like he was struggling a bit, but they knew better. I just dont really see an equivalent at the moment. Most of them look like fill-ins at best.

Hopefully Harrison is just taking his time to get into the swing of things, because he showed more promise pre-injury than what he is at the moment. Benefit of the doubt for him.

We need a review into our development staff because the lack of development/improvement from Ryan Jiath and a few others is very concerning. Exactly the same players they were 2 years ago.

lol - you’re actually serious with this post.
The sky is not falling in - get a grip!!!!

Maybe they (being the coaching staff )see a flaw in his game that we don't, because we are crying out for a big strong mobile target.
He's not very good on the lead. Drops them. Very good as a stationary one out target though.

McInness is a concern too. His 6th year on our list and what is he showing? Got outmarked by a small forward today, which was comical. Like Allan, shows no natural instinct to attack the ball or man. Just 'happy' to be participating it seems. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't play players without 'desire', 'will to win', 'killer instinct' - whatever you want to call it. These players are just passengers.

Jiath literally does stuff all in games. Prances around the periphery of play and spectates mostly. When he gets the ball (which is seldom), often makes poor decisions and misses targets. Another passenger.

Ryan played a good game last round, but this was another to add to the list of limited to no impact. Just doesn't do enough or take the game on. Passenger.

Staggers me, we have Nick Daicos and Josh Daicos at the club. Two of the most highly skilled and driven AFL players. Are these other players doing touch and ball handling drills with them? I would seriously want to know, as some of their skills and decisions in game are very poor. Ed Allan is another. His 4th year I think and honestly.... I can't see any improvement. Yes, he's put on size, but is that translating into better output on gameday? I think not.

He tries to thread the needle a lot, really goes after the low percentage corridor kicks. He will get better in time.

The review needs to be about how long to keep them. It's a numbers game outside the top end of the draft. You've got to churn through them to find some keepers. But we're trying too hard to develop blokes who just don't have game sense. They're getting 4,5,6 years because they can run.

No one played Fantastic but a Few Things I Noticed:

West impact was not massive and was not quite Clunked his Marks tonight but did some good work at Ground Level

Swadling got lot of the Ball. His ball use was Hot and Cold but can sure win the Ball and take the game on

We looked to lack good mature age players supporting the Kids

Hate that we play slow and most time you bomb the ball out of the Backline

I did notice that, he bites off more than he can chew, a lot like Taylor Adams used to.
Hopefully his decision making can improve over time.

There is one thing that is alarming, it is that both the senior and vfl side cannot trap the ball in the forward 50 and cannot defend the opposition transtion going back the other way.

It is unbelievable how the AFL and vfl side are so prone to getting sliced up by teams counter attacking.

This has coaching written all over it.
