So - I'm not suggesting we get all of them, I just think we need to land 1 of them at least to improve our list.
  • Neale and Sparrow improve our midfield rotations. Imagine the second unit coming into a centre bounce and Lachie Neale is apart of it...
  • Ridley is our Luke Ryan replacement. And he's 195cm so will come in handy when we play a side with 3 talls.
  • Jones and McInerney are wingman/high half forward. They'd improve on NOD/JOM on a wing if we played them there, or replace Switta, who turns 30 next year. Although if we had them replace Switta, we would need to teach them how to tackle.
I don't see how we squeeze in Neale and Sparrow to the midfield rotation. If they attend centre bounces, then Reid, Bolton, Serong, Brayshaw, Young etc get less.

The rest I agree with.

Well Brisbane seem to recruit player’s every year.
Sydney got Curnow
Geelong got danger, Jezza and getting Toby Greene this year
Hawthorn got Barrass and Battle and likely get Merrett this year
Suns got trac and JUH (haha)
Crows got Ah Chee
Brissy got Draper, Allen and in years gone by have brought in Neale, Cameron and Dunkley

We got Jackson, Bolton and McVee and look how good that has been. It's important to keep topping up!

Who do these please players push out of our best 22?

Neale and Sparrow - don't see who they push out of our midfield rotation. Erasmus and Johnson attend very few centre square.

Ridley - I can see the appeal, but very injury prone.

Arthur Jones - Is competing with Switta or Dudley. More competition here would help. Would be tough to guarantee him a spot, which you need to do for any recruit.
Justin McInerney - Where does he play? Wing, Half back. It would be tough to squeeze him into the side and guarantee him a spot, which you need to do for any recruit. Is an upgrade on Erasmus, but not sure he is worth the cost.

Tough to guarantee McInerney a spot? He is currently a top 6 player at Sydney and #1 for total score involvements in the whole competition. Would be close to the current AA squad/team. He also is a proper CBA midfielder now, not just a wing/hb/hf. But he'd never come and the other post is incorrect saying he is an UFA, because he is signed up to 2031.

The only one of that list who is a realistic option is Jones, and reports I've read suggest staying at Dogs is the most likely option.

The Bobby Hill rumours will probably start up again. Has been in Perth with a newborn and a longshot to play seniors again this year. Huge risk and might also have to look at sacrificing Switta to fit in Hill's salary, plus the Pies no doubt will ask for some stupid trade compensation.

There was a window, prior to their current successful window, where Brisbane had a best 24 and then kids who never played a game before in their life. That's when they were bringing across mature bodies like Hodge and Birchall to plug holes in training standards. Now they bring over guys who supplement their access to elite talent draft concessions to fill the voids in player ages.

So where are our holes in list demographics? I think we are short a key defender in the 24-28 years range. We have a lot coming up below, arguably too heavy on that position overall with:
McDonald, Ryan and Pearce 30, Cox is about to turn 28, massive gap until Draper, Davies at 22.

That gap is the problem. If we would take four years off McDonald it would be ideal - but we can't spend much buying that depth.

Or we can just wait and we will have to replace two to three of our key backs on the roster with guys with ten games experience.

Over the years ... yes. But their recruitment over the last off-season has been overstated They brought in Allen (injury-prone) and Draper (overrated), but lost Starcevich, Ah Chee and the Big O. I'd say it was a net loss even with Allen on the field.

And this year they could lose Neale and clubs will be throwing godfather offers at Zac Bailey. There will be a few retirements looming soon enough as well.

How's Jacob Blight going at Subi. He was better than expected at Richmond and could be a McDonald replacement that fits the age demographic? In saying that, if Jordan Ridley is keen to get out of Essendon, why not throw the hat in the ring. He's a gun when on the park!

Yeah but topping up with the right players. Neale and Sparrow are not the right players imo, however i agree with Arty Jones and he wouldn't cost anywhere near as much as the latter two.

You're saying they improve us, but I'm not convinced. Marginally, yeah, perhaps.

But are we cutting Ryan, Switkowski and NOD?

My opinion on those players/positions:
  • Ryan: Chapman and Worner are both capable of stepping into his role, with Worner primed to do so. We have smaller defenders in Walker and Simpson to bring in, and Draper and Davies awaiting opportunity. I don't want to lock them out, which is what Ridley would do.
  • Switkowski: Scerri is being groomed for this position, and we look like adding Yeo in the upcoming draft.
  • O'Driscoll: had a decent game last week and Whan was recently drafted. Erasmus gives versatility in this position.

I am wanting us to be cautious adding more "marginally" better players, and prefer us to be confident in our player development. McVee has done little to improve us, and may result in Walker/Simpson lacking opportunities.

At this point, I reckon for us it's largely stars, young guys and older squad depth level guys.

Barring finding someone who's being underutilised like Bulldogs did with Matthew Kennedy, the value just isn't there for trade/FA moves for mid-aged starting role players. Not for where our team is at.

Unless they want to take unders for a shot of the flag and no guarantees, a bit like what Mason Cox has done. Although I could see it with an older star who has more to give.

We will lose up and coming depth over the next 4-5 years so filling it cheaply will be necessary.

Buku Khamis would be handy depth, Best 24-27 areas

Leek Aliir?

Is this the Carlton or Saints board? Don't rate either of them any more than Draper. They wouldn't be best 23 and it's a waste of money bringing guys like this in. You can't poach them by offering peanuts and the cap space versus on-field return is not worth it.

Need to be looking for people to come in and be best 23 straight away, preferably someone who can help our ball movement from half back…

Nick Martin anyone?

If we wanted to fill the age profile gap in our key defensive stocks then those are the players to do so with. That's all. I literally said they weren't best 23.

Yes I know you said that. Hence why I brought up Draper. The point is if they aren't in the best 23 then there is no point bringing in players who are going to command best 23 money.

The core of our list has developed around giving young players early development opportunities.

I hope we stick with that and find ways to develop Draper and Davies, more likely for next season than the current one.

I understand why OMac came in, and it was successful.

But in the remainder of the season I hope some opportunities are taken to manage our best 23 if opportunity presents itself.

If you are looking tall defenders who are free agents who might come cheap(ish) in that age range

Jordan Butts
Caleb Graham
Flynn Perez
Ryan Gardner
