Which scenario would you have chosen if you were in WH shoes?

Pick 12 2009: Daniel Talia + Pick 18 2010: Isaac Smith

OR

Pick 12 2009: Kane Lucas + Pick 18 2010: Matthew Watson (What we ended up going with)

To be honest either scenario would have been a great result for the club and i'm delighted with what we actually ended up with.

We get a jet midfielder in Lucas whose versatility (HB/WING/HF) makes it easier for us with the new interchange rule. We also get a ready-made CHB with deadly kicking skills aiding the rebound from defence.

You wont get anyone saying they would prefer non Carlton draftees over Carlton draftees no matter what.

What you could say is Danial Talia and Isaac Smith will have more of an immediate impact than our two because we picked the tall in the second year, whereas Talia will be in his second year, and Smith being mature age.

How the argument ends in 5 years...who knows.

Now that we have a couple of tall defenders developing, i dont really give a shit.

IMO Wayne Hughes got it right

Kane offers us versatility as a utility. Can play as an on baller and play up as a HFF with his strong overhead marking. Setting aside the argument on who is the better player, I can't see Talia playing on the big power forwards, whereas Watson suits our needs in this area.

I think we might end up trading for Talia in the next couple of years anyway..particularly if Davies and Otten continue their good form as young Adelaide defenders.

So you reckon Talia with an interrupted year due to the knee injury is that far ahead of Watson???!!!!

Watson offers far more to our specific needs than Talia.

McCarthy and Talia would a better debate over which suits our needs better.

Isaac Smith is an unknown quantity for now..will hold judgment, I'm very happy with our no.9 though :)

By the time Lucas is the same age as Smith he will be well ahead of him. We made the right decision and I wouldn't change it. Even the GWS recruiter said we copped some unfair criticism for last years draft and that Lucas was a bargain.

As Zee said, McCarthy and Talia are a much better comparison and we got McCarthy in the 2nd round of a compromised draft!

Maybe another poll option could be, obviously with the benefit of hindsight and knowing how the draft would unfold, picking a mid like Smith or Lamb (more of a HF type) at 18 knowing we would get McCarthy and Mitchell with our second rounders.

So instead ending up with:

Pick 18 - Smith/Lamb
Pick 34 - McCarthy
Pick 42 - Mitchell

Would have loved to have had Atley slide one more pick.

I have had a similar thought myself, how do the recruiters rate Talia v Watson/McCarthy. It sounds like the recruiters didn't rate Talia too highly last year so I wonder how they would compare the 3 ..........

That said I am more than happy with the way the recruiting has turned out, Lucas was a STEAL last year (I love watching the kid play, think he will be a star is he can get his hammies in order) and we were able to nab the 2 best KPD's in this draft + a highly rated KPF who slid due to injury (from what I can gather anyway). This was due in part to other clubs needing midfielders, and Carlton being pretty set in the midfield due to recruiting Lucas last year and having Buckley in the wings next year ;):thumbsu:

The ONLY thing Talia has over Watson is an extra year of development under his belt in an AFL program. That said Watson is a bit of a man child, and while I can't see him playing KPD next year (more 3rd tall until his fitness improves) I don't think he will be too far behing Talia in the long run.

As others have said, it's a pretty obvious answer when it involves two Carlton players against two non-Carlton players.

Having said that, I'm stoked with our two.

Watson vs. Talia: Watson is simply more the type of player we needed here. A big, strong KPD with solid skills and play reading ability. More of a footballers-footballer. Talia is a great prospect. Has Watson covered athletically but is more of a Bower type then a KPD defender suited to taking on 'the gorilla' forwards. It's only a few cm's, but Watson is also more of the size we needed.

Lucas vs. Smith: We got a footballer over a speculative type. Ironically Lucas is actually younger then Smith and looks like he will be a genuine player for us for many years. Too early to judge someone like Smith so we shouldn't really bother. To be honest it's probably too early to judge any of them :o

I'm happy.

Lucas is the real gem in this list. The guy was a steal. All class, fast, very smart, excellent overhead, excellent skills, and an impressive fitness base already. Has all the tools to become an elite mid in the future.

:)

We have needed a key position defender for a few years now, so I was hoping that we would pick up Talia. However, Watson is bigger and is more suited to what we need, so in the end, I'm glad we have ended up with him. Getting Watson instead of Talia also means we get Lucas, and he is going to be a gun. I had a great feeling about him from the minute we drafted him. He's going to be great for us for the next decade.

Lucas is a gun. QED not Talia.

Moreover, thornton and setanta weren't expected to decline so rapidly. Add to that the injuries to Austin and our need is magnified compared to 12 months ago.

Probably not Splendini. I'm not trying to push the Talia argument anymore (at all). It was a literal comment based on the players age and how I deal with semi silly comparisons like this.

I haved loved this years draft and now my role in all of this is to cross my fingers and hope for these 3 talls. I'm personally really hoping for one of Duigan and Laidler to show up above average at AFL. Would push us fwd that much faster :).

Please believe me when I now say, I don't give a shit about Talia. Our issues have been addressed as best as WH could have addressed them. If they dont turn out, I will 100% not get on his back about it.

I like Lucas a lot. Even though he was a first year player, i felt he was a big loss when he got injured. Even from pre christmas training he looked an AFL player already with how he was contributing and being used in drills.

As you all know, i was a huge bagger of Bret Thornton because he stalled all rebounding momentum off Half Back for years at Carlton. Lucas was playing very assuredly and positively for a 1st yearer and was contributing to us when we were playing our best footy.

Lucas, Armfield and White gave us a decisively positive feel coming out of the defense for the first time in a long time. Then they all went and got injured and it went a bit pear shaped.

Gee i'm interested in how we structure up our defense from next year.

Happy with our recruiting the last few years, but gee have we got depth in defensive stock or what lol

Do you reckon that WH had spotted Watson and McCarthy last year as potentials first rounders for this year and decided to take Lucas as our first choice last year?

These are the sorts of decisions that WH and his team of merry men have to make every year for the club and as far as I am concerned, they nailed it last year and this year.

I'm not sure about the first bit Dramoth but you could be right and i respect your view on it and others. I personally think he went needs this year regardless of what he spotted a year earlier but that is just a guess like yours - deep down, I think he got a brief from the club/MC as well, particularly Ratts. We'll never know.

Based on our most dire need, he nailed it in 2010 and then by association, it makes 2009 awesome viewing as well based on list balance:D.

Suddenly a spine of

Watson
McCarthy
Lucas
Henderson
Mitchell

looks all the more tantalising... and all within the last 2 draft years...

boy am i excited. Well played Wayne Hughes and Shane Rogers :D:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::D

Lucas is a very exciting prospect...I think his agility allows you to play him in a HFF, midfield or backline role but with his quality i'd love to see him play in our midfield.

I can't help but wonder how we'd be feeling if Atley had slid to 18, yet we drafted Watson to address a need.

The best available and KPD factions might be united as one to bag Hughes for not picking a gun midfielder. ;) :p :D

Yeah Atley was nearly available. I still think Hughes would have picked Watson at 18. I reckon he passed up a good one in Pitt to pick Watson anyway.

And at 34 he could have gone Hallihan or Parker who are both extracters and would have suited us as midfielders.

And at 42 he could have got Fasolo but didn't.

No....i think Hughes was determined to draft KPP, and as it turned out we got 3 extremely good value picks. How they turn out? we shall find out.

As Marc Schmurf points out above, that is a good 2 year result.

I reckon Gold Coast took Tape over McCarthy only because he will be ready earlier. Normally McCarthy would have been drafted way earlier than he was this year.

I also think Pitt would normally have gone earlier but Gold Coast needed Prestia who is ready to go.

McCarthy fell into our lap.

Jamison, Watson and McCarthy is hopefully something to build #17 around.

Wallet , dont forget Bower down back !
When these boys are ready and Bower can play a rebounding 3rd or 4th tall i think were going to see a really damaging player !!!

I'm 70% confident on Bower and 30% not confident. He definately has a spot to start the year off, but he wouldn't wanna do much wrong next year.

For every good game he's played at the Club, he's played a bad one. Yeah i know he's had a few excuses but.......time to step it up Pauly.:thumbsu:
