We have finished 12th this season and by my reckoning that gives us #12 in the upcoming National Draft. What are the early indications as to who will be available at that pick???

Could steal Jack Darling been questions if he'd be top 10 or in around 15.. bit like the speculation over Butcher. Maybe Lucas Cook or Luke Mitchell i think his name is from Calder Cannons.

Could be one of our most crucial picks in quite some time. A strong forward would be good but I reckon we are 1 top class ball user short in the middle and defence so the club will have it's work cut out. Even at pick 12 best available may be the go which wasn't my thought on the matter a while back.

lucas cook, will probably be the best available KPP at this pick, unless Gorringe slides (praying for but soooo unlikely)

As others have suggested Lucas Cook would probably be the best available tall, and is probably not far off being the best available at the pick in any case. I watched him playing for Ballarat College in the country cup a couple of weeks ago and he looked great.

Darling may slide, and if he does I’m in two minds about him. He should develop in to a big powerful footballer at AFL level but his height is a worry. We have blokes like Bate and Dunn that are taller than him but seem to play as big bodied HFF’s, conversely he could easily be considered a bigger version of Brad Green (a great prospect).

There are so many really good mid’s this year and if GC “go tall” then it will mean some of the higher rated kids will get to us at 12.

For mine I would like the club to look to upgrade our 2nd round selection with a late first or earlier second round via a trade to give us some flexibility. If Darling (or Gorringe) slides we strike, but if GC goes tall then we steal another great young ball user at 12, and have a look at a kid called Tom Lynch with our second pick.

Lynch from all reports took up footy really late and is going from strength to strength as he continues to learn the game. Great upside.

I think that the club will probably look favourably at the likes of: Watts, Jurrah, Bate, Dunn, and Fitzpatrick and their subsequent development with another pre-season together. Further strengthen with the new rookie list rules that allow us to add a Dowler (if de-listed) or a VFL footballer to our KPF’s stocks and us to continue to take best available with our early selections in the ND.

If Ablett goes to GC, my understanding is Geelong would get two 1st round picks as compensation, how do they get incorporated into the order? Surely at least one would have to be a top 10 pick, which would mean Melbourne's pick slips to 13, maybe even 14 if the other compensation pick is placed ahead of pick 12 as well. Can anyone confirm how this works?

Im pretty sure they dont get it this draft (they have the next 3 years to use it thought). However, if they do they surly get one of GC's picks.

I'd be happy with Cook. Like most, I have a funny feeling about Darling. However, i'm sure he'd go very well.

Guys I think the more interesting subject is who we pick much later in the draft.
There are gems out there you just have to identify them.
Look at Davies and Jurrah!
The first 20 or so probably pick themselves the skill in selection starts much later.

Might be a silly question but which Davies are you talking about?

If we continue our form of picks around this mark of late whoever it is will be a gun. From the last few drafts we've done very well with Gysberts, Grimes, Frawley. Now just need a magic tall forward.

Just checked the GC board, our 2nd and 3rd picks are 31 and 48.

12, 31, 48.

Edit: just had a 2nd look and the draft list I looked at hadn't included the WCE 2nd round PP so our picks are actually 12, 32, 49.

They don't have any extra picks after round 1, they have the first pick in each round.
But Melbourne's (and every other club's) picks might get shunted down the order when compensation picks for the likes of Bock are slotted in. At least that's how I read it.

I wonder if the club is considering trading a player + one or both of the 31/48 picks for a lower pick? Possibly not a bad idea as Jordie and possibly Spencer will be using up our later picks as upgrades. I guess it depends what the club is after.

eg. Warnock + 48 to Hawthorn for their first pick.

A lot of the picks are for next year, if a club gets compensation it is for one of Gold Coast's picks not a random number

That is incorrect.

Clubs who lose Out of contract players like Bock will receive a pick from the AFL.

GC don't have to give up their picks for Bock.

The Crows have 5 years to use that pick any time they want but must confirm it b4 that season. They aren't allowed to use it for the next 2 years because the AFL wants GC and GWS to have the best kids.

Tom Lynch (not the guy from StKilda) is another possibility for our first pick, sounds like he has a big upside. not sure if he's worth pick 12 though. Someone posted this in another thread:

Good prospect.

Would like to see us try to maybe trade a Maric and our second round for an earlier second round/late first round to use on him. Leaving us free to take best availible at 12 (or even a KPD like McCarthy if we loose Warnock).

id rather not take lynch with our first, a lot of upside but a lot of risk as well... candidates for our first pick i think are Solly, Darling and Cook... (maybe lycett or gorringe if they slide)

Too early at pick 12 but I really like Geelong Falcon lad Josh Walker, saw him play for Vic Country against SA and he looks like what we need. Strong lad with good size, takes a grab and moved very well. Plays with a lot of desire.
Could be a bargain late pick. I have heard that there are questions over his kicking but he kicked well in that particular game.
