Very sporadically. He hasn't shown that same top end speed very often at AFL level.

Who has now been delisted.

I wonder why? I know Philips is the best player ever drafted but he is mentioned as having great speed by some but you can't see it in his draft highlights or his current AFL career. Stephens has easy to see speed and unless he has an injury, you would expect it to be on show and even further developed over time. Unless it is the SCG?

Combination of things I think.

1. Just doesn't get the space at AFL Level to use his speed.
2. Less space at the SCG.
3. His top end speed is good, but his first 4-5 steps aren't all that fast. It seems to take him a little bit to wind up, which leads to him caught before he gets to open space
4. At time at AFL level he has been fumbly, allowing opposition to close in on him.

I'm unashamedly on the Phillips train, but where is Stephens' easy-to-see speed? Are you using pre-draft videos to come to this conclusion? That was 4+ years ago. That's an eternity in footy terms

There are lots of examples of him running with serious speed. It just takes him a couple seconds to hit high gear.

KANGAS FLOAT STEPHENS DEAL

NORTH Melbourne will put pick No.43 on the table for Sydney midfielder Dylan Stephens after Carlton rebuffed a similar offer for contracted small defender Zac Fisher.

As revealed by AFL.com.au on Sunday, the Kangaroos put forward their earlier third-round selection in a potential deal to lure Fisher to Arden Street after he requested a trade midway through last week.

But the Blues will ask for more in negotiations around Fisher, who played only 12 of a possible 26 games at Ikon Park this season but still has two years remaining on his contract.

Carlton is likely to ask for future picks in any deal for wantaway midfielder Paddy Dow, who officially requested a trade to St Kilda on Sunday, with Blues list boss Nick Austin saying the club wants more than a third-round selection in return for Fisher.

"We've been pretty clear that won't get it done," Austin said on Monday.

"Zac's got two years to run (on his contract) and has been offered a pretty good opportunity at North Melbourne to further his football. I don't think it's going to be a difficult one to get done, but there's a fair bit going on.

"The deal will need to reflect the opportunity that he's been offered and also the two years to run on the contract."

North Melbourne has subsequently held discussions with Sydney around pick No.43 now being used in a deal for Stephens, who unlike Fisher is uncontracted having managed just 43 games across four years with the Swans.

"We've had initial discussions around the early third rounder (for Stephens)," Kangaroos list boss Brady Rawlings said.

"Obviously, they would probably want a little bit more than that. We'll see how that progresses. There's enough goodwill there and I think we'll get something done pretty early in the Trade Period." – Riley Beveridge

I can think of a pick we do have

We need to use the 2024 picks to go for 10 or 7 so nobody has delusions they are going to get them for a player they don't even have in their best 22.

Lols at Carlton. They can get bent. Good business moving straight to dealing with Sydney for that pick - get done what both parties are reasonably willing to get done. Bad luck for the blues if they can't sort their issues.

Sounds like he'll fit right in

In shocking news, nobody wants trash picks... but we don't have any second round picks so whatcha gonna do.
Its going to be WC's 35 I reckon. We'll get it in the trade for 1. It'll be pushed out well past 40 anyway, so its much of a muchness.

A late second rounder ain't what they used to be.

The point of the comment is that he had speed pre draft. Do you think players should get slower in a professional environment? If they are quick in their draft year and they are slower in the AFL, that is a big development problem.

I think late second and early third round picks will have greater value. 3 GC academy boys going early, Croft going first round too, it is going to soak up a number of trash picks to pay for these boys, you might get pushed down in the mid to late first round but it is going to hoover up a fair few shit picks which could see surviving picks jump up a fair bit.

Don't get me wrong, he is probably worth a mid second round pick or so, we just don't have any and he isn't the type of player we should be chasing picks for, Logue was worth more than what Freo got for him, we didn't have anything better to give them.

IF we do a trade for pick 1 and IF they do want to let go of a second round that is fine, I just don't think we should devalue our hand too much for the sake of appeasing clubs for depth players.
