Interesting to see comments about whether Peter will be top this or that number.
Utterly irrelevant.
Is he a better small defender than Harry Cunningham? Of course not. Is he a better ruck than Harry Cunningham? Of course he is.
With some development and plenty of application can he be an AFL standard first ruck? Recruiters and coach think so. He has already demonstrated he can be something of a forward. Not the best for sure but not rubbish either.
So the big question is "Can he be an effective player for us for the next 8 or so years? Up to AFL standard, making an effective contribution to the team like Tom Hickey did in 2021?"
We don't know the answer yet, but I think it's a real possibility. Meantime I couldn't give a sh*t whether he's the 7th or 19th best player in the team.

exactly ... it's quite a strange concept, seeing as he might not even be best 22 for round 1
but we don't need 22 "best players", we just need the 22 to play their roles each week ...

Call me crazy but I think we have so much talent in our future team* that our best 3, 5, 10 players etc will look completely different week to week. It's why I don't see many All Australians or Brownlows coming our way (but who needs them!) So it's a pointless exercise trying to rank any of them, let alone the guy who hasn't even played a game for us yet!

*If we can keep them all together.

My thoughts exactly...

From what I've seen of Ladhams, I think areas of improvement for him are his physicality and consistent application across 4 quarters. He's got great skill for a ruck and has no trouble finding the ball but if we anticipate relying on him long-term as a number one guy, I think we need him to thrive more on the physical side of the game, to relish getting to crash bodies around him and be very active in close spaces at all times in close stoppage situations. Sure he can win the ball 20 times a game but I'll happily give up 5-7 of those touches for a more aggressive, physical presence around the ball.

Sorry to intrude, has ladhams played in either of your preseason matches?
Played the first game. Moved well, kicked a few goals. Likely R1 starter imo

As well as playing well in the GWS scratch match he played the full reserves game on Sunday. A common opinion was to get a full game rucking and to allow McDonald, McLean and Reid to play without going too tall on a wet track.
Consensus is that he is highly likely to be in the Rd1 team as ruck chop out and tall forward.

Unlikely to be in the team rd1 now. I wonder if it’s one of the old bloods culture decisions. May have been some training or preparation issues, who knows
Do you think it's unlikely now due to a specific comment or article or similar that you saw? I can't decide yet what the best balance for the team will be.

This is a tricky one, I like McLean more as a forward and Ladhams more as a ruck. I'm prepared to be proven wrong but I think McLean fits the forward line better than Ladhams does in terms of his discipline, willingness to throw his body around and contested marking even with Ladhams' skill.

Most teams have two proper rucks to play week in week out now and with the wet weather, maybe playing more of a ruck than a tall forward is preferable. I do love McLean though and would probably err towards picking him from round 1.

News Flash: previously second string ruck/fwd at another club not a walk up start at the swans.

that makes sense ... cheers, interesting to see ladhams early

Im not sold hes not playing round 1 either

Im also thinking they are considering him ahead of Hickey in certain games when not up against the monsters. Hes elite around the ground. Not saying it will happen round 1

but at stages i think Sydney look at Ladhams as the starting ruck at stages during the year with a taller 2nd guy like Amartey who i really liked what i saw from last year

and like was said above dont think they were getting much out of Ladhams as a 4th tall forward

Buddy, Ladhams, Mcdonald/Amartey with Hickey ruck is how im going. If its pissing rain then maybe a Mclean over Ladhams/younger guys

Just checked Mcleans 2 goals 3 behinds will be hard to not pick him round 1

Jon Ralph said Ladhams has been battling knee tendinitis in the preseason but is over it now. Good timing. I thought amartey was great in the ruck.
Still haven't watched the game yet. Am thinking I might just skip to the 2nd half after reading everybody's comments.
