It's fair to say im very excited for the 2019 draft, because the "9's" have been gems of draft years and, although inable to do so, I wouldnt mind keeping the Ablett compensation till then ;).
But enough jibber jabber, a decision MUST BE MADE, which of these "9" drafts will we reflect on as being better.

In the red corner we have the the 99 draft: in this draft we snaffled up Joel Corey (pick 8), Paul Chapman (31), Cameron Ling (38) and Corey Enright (47). In total we had 7 picks in this ND with 3 not quite making it.

And in the blue corner is the 09 draft: After a premiership year, what better way to cap it off than with a Wells super special. This draft brought Daniel Menzel (17), Mitch Duncan (28), Allen Christiensen (40), Nathan Vardy (42) and Josh Cowan (65) our way. In total we had 6 picks in the ND though our last was a rookie promotion (Jeremy Laidler)

You may decide either way but the idea is to choose which will eventually be better. Please refrain from using individual accolades as a barometer as the 09 draft obviously haven't had their time to shine. On the other hand be realistic, don't choose 09 because you hope and want it to be better.

Let the voting begin

Re: 1999 v 2009

2009 is a ripper but I don't think it can top 1999.

2009 got us Pods in the rookie draft too.

Re: 1999 v 2009

Good point, I tended to stear away from the RD. 1999's wasn't much chop. I personally think the 2009 draft will yield the best player. My signature may give it away

Re: 1999 v 2009

1999 draftees led to 3 premierships. Not bad. Not bad at all.
2009 promise lots (heck a couple have a medal already!) but you can't put them ahead of those who have already produced.

Don't forget 2007 this is the year that could glue the two batches (99and 09) together. Hawkins, Lonergan on to rookie list even though "sick" and above all SELWOOD. 3 goodies there.

Re: 1999 v 2009

4 AA's, 12 Premiership Medals & a Norm Smith may be hard to beat, but the class of Menzel, Christensen, Duncan and Vardy could do it.

Re: 1999 v 2009

2001 class of Bartel, Kelly, Ablett and SJ is nothing to sneeze at either.

11 premiership medals, 2 Brownlows, 2 B&Fs and 2 Norm Smiths in amongst that lot. :thumbsu:

If this even becomes a serious contest in five years time, we'll be doing very, very, very, very well for ourselves. I guess something 2009 has ahead of 1999 is that 1999 still had a few misfires along the way.

Re: 1999 v 2009

Don't forget 6 B&F's between them too (Three won in premiership years), and premiership captain :D

Crikey, I forgot! What an amazing package.

Yes, better than 2007. And Ablett is now known as Smedts if my memory of draft trades/picks is OK.

We do need two really good years - lets hope the new batch or 2010 provides the follow up good year to 2009 at the draft table. Just to put some cream on a cake that continues to stay "fresh".

Yes thats why I didnt include it. Will never be surpassed this millenium...besides maybe goldcoasts 2010 draft and GWS 2011 ;)

Keeping "fresh" is and interesting point catwhiskers and requires continual drafting of top notch players. If this continues there is no need for a drop off. The term "rebuild" although I believe is easier than keeping fresh (greater influx of young players, higher draft picks = more success of finding quality players), but it is also a term that hides the fact when teams are "rebuilding" the are often sh*t at the current moment in time
