Two types of currency in offloading the Hopper contract

TPP and draft picks

There will be an inverse relationship with both

If we get a 2nd rounder we will probs have to pay for most of his wage on our TPP

If we can move him on, and accept a throw away pick 4th round , we probs only have to pay 20% of his wage

Either way his contract length is a disaster, and we will have to subsidise moving him , is my expectation

No, we get a 3rd round pick pay nothing, the whole reason why clubs will be interested to take on his contract like Essendon if Merrett leaves is because they won't need to give up much pick wise.

I like your optimism ,

but reckon you will be surpised by what happens in the end, as we will have to pay some of his wage

Either way I am fully onbaord for this move.

I know - but remember also. Patty is 36 & born almost the same day as Trent Cotchin. who is 3 years retired. And Trent, had the same last 5 years "games played" than Dangerfield has right now. Paddy has been incredible in his conditioning and drive to play with the intensity he still does, we have been really ordinary in the last decade in when it comes to conditioning. Nearly all the players of the dynasty era had shorter careers than projected. I thought Dusty would still be playing right now and being a dangerous permanent forward.
Big difference in styles. Trent went from bruise-free footy early on, to basically smashing his body for the team in his last few years.

Dusty had bad luck with that major injury, if it wasn't for that he may still be playing in the forward pocket..

Dangerfield played differently.

Kidding ourselves if we think anyone is interested in taking a guy who goes at a speed of one-mile an hour and has barely a single defensive attribute to his name.
You'd have to pay half to three-quarters of his salary for someone to be remotely interested.
We're stuck with him.
Hopefully we learn from the experience.

my understanding is that paying half his salary is something we will consider, this is why he could find a new home

In all honesty I think the only way we could offload Hopper would be if we were to attach a draft pick and pay out his salary (seems unlikely).
I think the best case scenario is that he stays and gets pushed out when others return.

He's actually not too old to reinvent himself and the VFL would be the place to do it, but I think perhaps he's so entrenched in his ways now that it makes it difficult. He'd need to stop going to ground (my single biggest frustration with any footballer) and pick up his defensive intent and spread - I think these things are related.
Unfortunately I don't see us getting out of his contract in any way so it's up to Jacob if he wants to fundamentally change the way he plays to keep up with the modern game.

How much is on and how many years? Someone needs to be held accountable for the long contract.

We still making the same decisions with gibcus and balta. Its a raffle whether it is going to out.

He goes to ground because he lacks leg speed and he knows it.

If we could offload him for a throwaway pick and pay a small portion of his salary, that would be ideal. If he stays I’d like to see him tried in the Townsend role - big body negating forward that can take a mark and create a contest. Outside of that he doesn’t have a role in our side.

BS. Everyone, including the so-called experts thought it was a good deal at the time. Unfortunately, the game has changed rapidly in the last few years and his type are quickly being left behind.

I vaguely recall Caro and others calling out the Hopper part of the deal at the time. I didn't like the deal at all (don't like slow mids who can't kick, don't like overpaying for pre-agents) but wasn't on the board so have no proof.

but it wasnt a good deal at the time - 7 years and price and draft capital. Even dimma quit after seeing how shit they were. The recruiters job is to see this. We all saw after a couple of games he was a tractor who dives on the footy. There needs to be accountability. Same as our drafting mistakes. Needs to be accountability.

Yes we paid up big time for him in terms of picks and salary, but EVERYONE thought we were still in the window, and when you're in the window you have to have a crack and we went all in.

Even Corn thought he was a gun back then.....
