HAWTHORN forward Jarryd Roughead found himself in an unfamiliar position on more than one occasion on Sunday against North Melbourne when he was called upon to take on a role in the ruck.

Round 5 V West Coast
Hawks key forward J Roughead had a handful of early opportunities to atone for his dirty day last weekend yet seemed to be enduring the same form, spilling three difficult marking chances in the opening 10 minutes. Evidently, it did not last laying a great tackle in the second quarter witch resulted in a goal & the Big Roughnut played a great game his kicking for goal a highlight this year ended the game with a game high 4 Goals!

IT was an answer that drew a laugh but spoke volumes about Jarryd Roughead.
Back in 2004, the former promising basketballer had proven he had the skills to be drafted following an outstanding year at TAC Cup level with the Gippsland Power but clubs headed to Canberra eager for an insight into his personality.

  • AT THE end of Round 7, 1992, Jason Dunstall had booted 55 goals. Think about that for a moment. That's an average 7.8 goals a game.
The legendary Hawthorn spearhead blitzed the '92 Coleman Medal with 139 goals, and the Hawks were not even the highest-scoring team that year. Not even close.

List assessment: Hawthorn
By Chris Fagan

Jarryd Roughead
Had a really good first half of the year and probably his form tapered away a little bit before he injured himself in the round 19 game. He’s back up and running now after some minor surgery and he will be able to enjoy a full pre-season. He was in terrific form early on.

We have what it takes: Roughead

THE Hawks are flying.

With more than 38 fit players in full pre-season training the club looks to be back to its best, according to key forward Jarryd Roughead.

Roughead is currently on the Coast as a part of the Hawthorn community camps.

"Pre-season has been good so far, (we've) been on the track since October 26. (We) haven't been out that early in a couple of years," Roughead said.

No free agency worries for Hawks

Jarryd Roughead had some interesting relative points to make -

Quote:
HAWTHORN forward Jarryd Roughead says he is not concerned about the possible consequences free agency could have on his team.

The AFL is expected to introduce the concept on Tuesday, allowing players a greater chance to switch teams after eight seasons with a club.

But Roughead said any new rules were unlikely to affect the Hawks.

“I don’t have much to do with it, I’m only six years [with the Hawks] and I think they’re trying to go for eight years," Roughead said.

"I’ll only be 25 then and I don’t think it is going to be any concern.

“We’re so young that I don’t think we’d have anyone up for free agency for five years.”

Fellow forward Lance Franklin has been touted as a possible recruit for the new Gold Coast team but Roughead said the introduction of free agency was unlikely to see him depart the Hawks.

“I still think Buddy is about seven years here, so I don’t think he is anywhere near a chance to be in free agency so I don’t think that is an issue,” Roughead said.

JARRYD Roughead will cast aside family ties if young cousin Jordan is chosen by the Bulldogs to play against Hawthorn.

The Hawks take on the Dogs in the NAB Cup quarter-final at Etihad Stadium on Friday.
Jarryd - the older of the two cousins - today said he was looking forward to them literally bumping into each other at Etihad Stadium.
"I've never played against him in any sport, so it should be a bit of fun. And good for Dad and uncle as well," Hawk Jarryd said after training at Waverley Park.

Roughead said there was a feel-good atmosphere around Waverley right now after a less interrupted pre-season for most senior players and the drip-feed of key personnel coming back into the team.

Hawks confident for season

As reigning champions last year, the Hawks limped into the 2009 campaign and were unable to secure a berth in the finals.

This time around, they have been bolstered by a much longer pre-season campaign, the fruits of which were on show in the opening-round drubbing of Richmond in the NAB Cup.

"I think it's just the confidence the group's had out of the pre-season," Roughead said on Tuesday ahead of Friday night's NAB quarter-final clash fellow premiership contenders the Western Bulldogs.

Was just watching the 07 Elimination Final against the Crows, and came across this:

He should definitely look at growing it back. :D

Nice caps Hodges.. not sure bout him growing it back though!

Roughy has been mentioned in a few articles atm about Simon Taylors broken leg and the hawks options for a back up ruckman. The following snippet is from an article in the Australian:

Hawthorn's Simon Taylor out for five months

Coach Alastair Clarkson may also have to consider a pinch-hitting role for key forward Jarryd Roughead, who has kicked 184 goals in his 102 senior games. Roughead stands at 193cm, just one centimetre shorter than Skipper.

"Roughead as an option? That's a good question for the coach," Evans said.

Roughy played and jarred his knee during the NAB Challenge match at Southport v Brisbane in round 4 of the NAB competitions. Below is an article from the Age:

Roughead limps off with injury

HAWTHORN'S injury jinx heading towards the season continued last night when forward Jarryd Roughead jarred his right knee in a practice-match loss to the Brisbane Lions.

The Lions won a scrappy contest 7.14 (56) to 6.9 (45) in very blustery conditions at Southport on the Gold Coast.
