Draper has not really played enough footy to get a real line on him as a forward but he has shown he can take a decent mark in the forward line in the VFL and in a few games last year. His goal kicking is the biggest issue for mine. My opinion of him as a forward is he will be fine to spend 5 or 6 minutes deep as he can compete and can take a strong contested mark. There are not many rucks going around that are consistent forwards. It will be what Bryan can do that will be the key to Wright and his spot in the side. IMO.
I feel the criticism is a bit harsh at times as it is not his role to be Harry McKay. His role is to kick his 30-35 goals and be a good second ruck which he did last year. He is actually a decent player around the ground when he rucks.

Good points re his "around the ground" work.

Massively important to have a big target to kick to coming out of defence. At times last year he was huge in taking marks up the line. Something we have been lacking for a long time.

Helps with fast linking play out of the backline.

He had a game out of the box against the Bulldogs kicking 7 straight. 4 a few weeks later against the Pies. Take those games out and he couldn't average a goal a game even though he is plonked at FF for the most part.

But he did snag those so he needs credit for that. His kicking has probably saved and extended his career. Maybe, just maybe if we become a dominant inside 50 side and can hit him up then he can convert.

I still see him as more of the delist type than the best 22 type but he's one that could prove me wrong.

He was rucking solo for awhile at the start of the season when Draper was injured if I recall.

He’s hell of a lot better than smack. Smack probably had a better natural ability though. When he was flying he was awesome.

This is often the way I see him to. He comes across often as a guy who is afraid of getting the footy/getting involved. I know he doesn't have the big crash the pack body like say a Tom Hawkins. But I find im looking at him going "for god's sake get in there!" quite often. Whether thats a fear thing or a confidence thing I don't know, but hopefully he has worked on it.

But he did kick 29 goals last year and averaged 10 hitouts a game…. A repeat of that would be fantastic- and if he can have a few more purple patch games like he did against the Dogs and Pies late last season then who knows how far he could go..?? 40+ goals from Peter is not an unrealistic expectation

And if you exclude all the games he kicked goals, he didn't kick any goals!

He averaged 1.2 goals / game from Round 6 onwards excluding the 4 and 7 goal games.

For comparison, Luke Jackson is a player everyone would say is a clearly capable AFL player.

Wright averaged more Marks, Goals, i50s, contested marks, 1%'ers, and Metres Gained.

People expect Wright to be a star, when in reality he's simply a decent Forward-Second Ruck.

As eth-dog said, very few players have managed 10 hitouts a game and 30 goals a season, Wright had 9.8 and 29 in that role.

If Jones, Francis and Stringer can provide more, Wright offers 'enough' in the role he plays.

Unpopular opinion, I would prefer 2's from Peter every week than 7, 0 , 2, 0, 1 over the season. May be a higher total return but for the team it won't be beneficial.

Main job imo is to look threatening enough to keep the biggest lump of a defender away from Harry and Jake. If he can do that it’s a winner.

30 goals (1.3 a game) is a realistic expectation I think.

Basically 4 goals every three weeks.

Exactly (w)right. Circumstances have seemingly driven it into our supporter base that Wright is our #1 forward but that wasn't the intention when we recruited him. And it's not how he should be judged.

If you exclude the 3 games he played as our 1st ruck he averaged 1.6 goals and 7.5 hit outs per game last year.

He'll get the tallest defender most weeks I'd assume. For some clubs that's their best defender, for others it's not.

Stewart or Laverde would play on him out of our backline, whereas Ridley is our best (or most dangerous) defender.

So long as Wright forces whoever is playing on him to be occupied, it means the rest of our forward-line isn't as easily double or triple teamed. Control the aerial contest - ensuring that it's either marked by us or brought to ground - relief ruck Draper and contribute a goal or so a game and it keeps the team dynamic ticking along nicely.

That's why I suggested those sides. Keath, Andrew, Howard and Blicavs are the best defenders for those sides.

I also think about best defenders as in best defensively rather than offensively.

Had a slow start to the game but worked into it well. From all accounts he looked underwhelming in the match sim and against the Dogs, so it will be great for his confidence.

Looked like a good game to me. Could have been better if he'd taken all his opportunities but was still good.

Dropped a couple of early marks he should have held but was generally good. Played in front 90% of the time and did well when it was his turn in the ruck.12 disposals 6 marks 17 hit outs . Decent game.
