Maybe we are all overcomplicating our thoughts around 2MP and its simply a case of;-
'looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane'

People focus on what Wright isn't (a 200cm gorilla) instead of what he is, and always has been - a 200cm guy who's decent on a lead and a nice accurate kick that can carry some ruck minutes.

He's not going to be the star you build a forward line around that GCS hoped when they drafted him in the top 10, but for a 4th round pick he's done what we needed him to do - provide a stop-gap between Daniher and the next generation.

If we get anything more out of him from here, it's a bonus IMO.

He could hold quite a strange record, if my very lazy research is anything close to accurate (I'm 99% sure it won't be).

In his 10 years of AFL footy, I believe he's won a B&F one year - and not placed in the top 10 in any of his other nine years.

If true, he'd have to be the only player in history to do so, surely.

He was in the VFL, he wasn't in line for selection.
Will be interesting to see who gets which defender. IMO Langford will get the best defender like he did in the second half of last season because he's shown that he struggles against a #1 quality defender. Draper is less dangerous but demands a big guy, so Caddy should get #3 defender.

My guess is they'll play their most dangerous intercepting defender on Caddy.

That would have been Sicily, but not sure who exactly that'll be in the current structure.

Caddy is still young, so they'd back a good intercept player to just setup offensively and get more the other way than they concede.

If he kicks a bag or two it'll force teams to re-think that plan.

Who gets the oppositions best tall defender then?

Draper or Langford or Caddy. I'd imagine that would be the case 9/10 even if Wright was playing. He's so cooked it's not funny.

I can not get back on the Wright train. I liked his first year despite his marking short comings. He was obviously good the year he kicked 50 goals. What turns me off is how easily he can be nullified in a contest. There was one stage on Saturday before he got injured where one of the Pies small defenders bowled him over in a marking contest. All he had to do was a slight bump in the side and Wright collapsed like an imploding building. Everyone knows that you can easily move him off the line of the footy to the point they do not even bother playing a tall on him at times. I just do not know where he goes from there. Before he was dropped last year sides where also exploiting his lack of pace when he was in the ruck as well.

Shame as he is one of the best kicks for goal we have had since Lloyd.

But at the end of the day that is not enough.

Draper probably gets the deepest defender, the next follows Langford.

Draper was ahead of Wright for R1 anyway, so this just robs our depth / VFL side for a time.

What have I missed?
Draper will play as the number 1 ruck.
Maybe spend a little more time forward, but predominantly rucking.

Bryan will be playing majority ruck. Draper majority forward.

Interesting. I personally don't see Bryan taking the number 1 from Draper.

Draper monsters opposition ruckman.
I think he's looking super fit, and in for a big year.
Wouldn't be surprised seeing him in the calculations for AA ruckman come seasons end.

Draper rarely if ever monsters the opposition ruck. I'd be shocked if he was AA, he'd be behind McInerney, Cameron, Darcy, Jackson, Briggs, Meek, Gawn, Xerri, Nankervis, Marshall, Grundy and English in terms of rucks in the AFL. He's in the bottom half of rucks in the comp.

This is true based on history. That said you're a bit generous to Meek who hasn't shown anything more than Draper historically except for last week.

Plus most rucks are pretty inconsistent Gawn aside. So wouldn't take that much for Draper to move into top 5 of that group IF he has truly gone to a new level. Time willt ell.

Bryan has been the number 1 ruck so far this pre season. How far it goes who knows but Draper has spent a lot of time forward with Nick starting in the ruck.
