When you are a big forward there is pressure to be a bit of a hero .. to be the main man and win games off your own boot.

It doesn’t suit Pete’s nature. He gets in his own head too much I reckon.

Yes he gets better match ups around the ground when rucking, but also the pressure is off and he suddenly has sticky hands and presence.

I think if you are planning it would be more like 70% maximum for Bryan.
Maybe even 60% to start with.

Seems likely. Was just trying to illustrate that even with guys playing maximum minutes there was room for wright at forward/ruck

The bigger change seems to be Wright higher up. Plays to his strengths more then him playing deep and not having another overly slow forward means it’s fine defensively

Impressive to get back in the hole and take some intercept marks too.

He's a confidence player and when he's on the sticky mits are on show, also it's great when your ruckman takes marks around the ground like Gawn does for the Dees.

The fact that he's such a good kick too makes him a weapon when he's on song.

Running 2 rucks isn't the liability it was over the last few years now there's the 5 man bench so no reason Wright and Bryan can't be a tandem playing largely off the bench. It gives the chance to really work over the opposition ruckman especially if the opposition 2nd ruck is a part timer/stop gap.

Should we cop an injury to one of Caddy/May/Edwards we have plan B sitting in the side ready to execute immediately by putting Wright forward again.
hawks have been doing 50/50 TOG for reeves and meek and they're both doing pretty decently

I’ve not been a fan for a while, but his last 6 quarters of footy have been really good.

That last goal he kicked where he took a mark (from Merrett) and actually went in hard and crushed Langdon (I think?), I don’t think I’ve seen him do that before. Didn’t intentionally hurt him or anything, but just didn’t pull out of the contest - which I think he would have as recently as 3 weeks ago.

It was great to see. He just presented strongly with confidence and didn't back down when he saw the contact coming. Real freight train stuff. He hasn't done that since he copped that suspension against Sydney, which was a similar scenario in some ways.

I saw him do it against the swans once

Is it crazy to suggest that Wright should take the mantle of our #1 ruck? I mean it's definitely premature (sample size of one game). He might be bog average in terms of rucking capabilities, but had shown he can compete and not get blown away by the best ruck in the league, and would have absolutely hands down THE BEST key forward attributes of any #1 ruck in the AFL.

Taking into account both rucking & second position skillset and around the ground & arial influence, I don't think it's crazy to say that Peter Wright comes out on top in terms of our ruck options.

Blakiston is in no world a #1 ruck; particularly gets monstered at stoppage due to his slight frame, but should be fine as second ruck/defender (as he was on the weekend).

Where does this leave Nick Bryan? Maybe it's recency bias having not seen Bryan for the past year and Wright having a great game in the ruck on the weekend... Keen for people's thoughts

Yes.

Because 80% of what he did as Ruck he can do at CHF.

40% ruck 40% CHF sounds about right

with byran coming back from a long time off we should be able to manage his minutes well, 60/40 with pete

I thought a couple of the things he did really well on the weekend was curb the influence of Gawn around the ground/in the air, and have his own arial influence around the ground, particularly in defense. Can he do that at CHF (or on 40% ruck time)?

I also thought he performed at least as well in ruck contests against Gawn as you could expect from Nick Bryan. If Bryan was doing 60% of ruck duties, where does he go the other 40%? He is no Peter Wright in the fwd line, and is covered by Blakiston in defensive skillset (acknowledging Bryan is still developing so things could change over time).

Again extremely small sample size but as has been noted by a few posters, the fwd line seemed to have a better balance with Caddy, May & Edwards as the talls, with Wright pushing fwd when the opportunity presents. If we run with Wright at CHF/ruck and Bryan ruck/CHF, does that disrupt the balance?

Our midfield performed better at clearances last year when Draper was in the ruck vs Bryan and similarly I think Wright being the main ruck has helped them in last two weeks. Its not so much about winning the hit outs but he's able to use his bigger frame to block and clear space for mids in congestion in a way Blaki cant.

What a difference a week makes. 2MP basically took Draper to the cleaners. Almost total domination.

I thought he was done but hes been great since moving to ruck. Im giving him a mulligan for the anzac day performance but also think that was poor coaching not swapping him out for Blakiston in the centre when steene was leaping over him. He did the same to pittonet in the last qtr the week b4 so we should have been prepared.

Draper isn’t that good to be fair
No, he is not. Still our number two ruck polished him off rather easily for most of the game. Even Blakiston snagged a goal on him.

Draper has been going OK. In three of the previous games he got coaches votes. In saying that he was subdued yesterday.
