Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

So in this thread so far (ignoring the shit-stirring and troll replies), we've had opinions ranging from Reid is a gun when he's on, injury prone (despite averaging 19 games a season) and an overpaid dud who wouldn't get a game in front of Jesse White. Never change, BigFooty.

Reid is a competent players with skills who has never taken the next step for a variety of reasons

He is on a contract that he should never of gotten, we know why he did but it was not worth it imo, has not hard to work as hard as others essentially because he is tall.

Reid is fine and not our biggest problem IMO, but each to their own.

To be fair i didnt read beyond my own opinion, but I dont consider Reid sydneys biggest problem at all, just a poor contract decision and an overrated player in some sectors

Easy to say in hindsight. He was a long term plan before Tippett and the amazingly Franklin followed. The Swans have screwed with his development in one position over the course due to the decisions that followed.

I think now Goodes is out Reid will find a place in the forward line. Hopefully he can get over this injury as I see him as being important if we are going to contend this year.

agree wholeheartedly with this.

dont you guys remember the panic that set in when micky o retired and bazza had his n'th brain fade?

i recall watching a match circa 08, 09. i saw oloughlin around the anz before the game, and during the game i was thinking to myself, we could sure have used him out there, dodgy ankle or not. we even brought a crippled bradshaw in as a bandaid solution (and essentially offered him an additional year as part of his retirement package).

when reid was signed to a 5 year deal, every swans fan and theur dog hailed it as a huge step forward.

fast forward and weve recruuted tipp and buddy, and playing goodes in the forward line, and reid lost his way. the injuries havent helped his cause either.

even if we signed him to a 3 year deal, otger teams would have come circling and we would have had to pay overs if we wanted to retain him.

who would have predicted the tipp n budd trades? had we not signed them, things may have panned out differently for reid, although thats questionable given his injury troubles.

but at the time it was the wise thing to do.

Can all you knockers please refer to the excellent thread called something like Draft strategy 101. It was a really well researched thread that basically showed the most difficult players to draft/trade in are KPF and that's why they are generally overpaid in comparison to gun midfielders who are far more common. So in recruiting it's KPF first, daylight second. You don't let players like Reid get poached.

Having watched a lot of replays over summer, Reid is the least of my concerns in this team. Played some very good footy, klunked a stack of pack marks and showed real athleticism. I reckon he's close to finally fulfilling his undoubted potential.

If he wasn't on contract you can be assured a heap of other teams would be sniffing around with substantial $.

swansfan51 will be very happy to read this post ;)

Here is the thread, for reference. It's a good read.

I hope so. It will be a crowded forward line for the talls, with Franklin, Tippet, Sinclair and Reid

Only Reid should permanently be in the f50. Buddy might be there most of the time, but he could roam around the midfield, Tippett and Sinclair will rotate. So it'll be most likely three, maybe two talls at any one time.

Franklin and Reid to rotate out of CHF to the wings/centre would be a nightmare for other teams to match up and reduce the height in the Fd line. Reid showed some good signs in this role last year. Either of these players driftng down to the HB line would provide a very good option for an outlet from a kick in, I feel.

Reid could really use his marking ability to take grabs on the wing and drive the footy into the f50
Yup. I reckon we'll see him as more of a high-half-forward or even up on the wing this year. He played that role pretty well last year (and had a couple of breakout games further up the field) and more experience in that position will only reap more rewards. We've always known he has great hands when going for a mark, but what he showed last year was that he has quick, clean hands in close and when he does get enough space to kick it forward, he knows how to kick it to a leading target. Especially now with Gary Rohan being out for a while, I can see him really take on that link-man role and making it his own.

Agree, especially with Rohan having hamstring troubles. Sam Reid has looked good off wing/half-forward, where his marking ability has troubled opponents.
