Probably been done but just been going back through our recruiting/draft selections and knew we selected badly at the time but what about the following players missed, hindsight and experience are wonderful things but any thoughts?

We had three 1st round selection to get 4- L.Livingston, 11- Trent Sporn and 15- Simon Wiggins.

Players we missed include:
8- D.Motlop, 12- S.Burgoyne, 14- D.Harris, 18- D.Kerr, 20- K.Cornes, 23- D.Petrie, 25- M.Coughlan, 39- A.McPhee, 43- M.Williams, 44- J.Hunt, 50- D.Cassisi, 52- A.Buchanan, 56- D.Cross, 60- C.Jones, 67- G.Johncock.

Highlighted the ones which really hurt.

How easy it could of been S.Burgoyne, D.Kerr and D.Petrie or better depending on opinion.

Hindsight is grand, isn't it? ;)

The reality is that the draft, especially back then, was a lottery. And to an extent, it still is today.

Every club and its supporters has the ability to look back on a draft and wonder what could have been.

No new thoughts.

It's a topic that's been done to death and is old news.

take a look at how were going out of the 05 draft so far

Really hope you weren't expecting much else, JK. If you were, you're delusional. If you weren't, why start the thread?

Maybe a relutance to draft Aboriginal players, in the 90s and early 00s. Not any more i believe

Good point. The homesick factor scared the crap out of recruiters I reckon.

Well until we do something as ridiculous (in hindsight mind you) as draft Tambling instead of Buddy or Chris Groom instead of McLeod i'll deal with it.

Apparently Livingston was very highly rated as a youngster so you can't really blame the recruiters for that one as much as people tend to.

Apparently the 2000 draft was the 1st time in our history that we had 3 picks in the 1st round. As the OP highlighted, the picks were Livingston, Sporn and Wiggins at picks 4,11 and 15 repsectively. The other players we picked were Blake Campbell, Sean O'Keeffe and Callan Beasy, all had very short careers. It really was a sad waste of a draft, but in not excusing Livingston and Sporn completely, their careers were, in part, ruined by injury. Sporn had a very good debut match, but was never really right after that.

I'll give you a bit of a history lesson here. The recruiting manager from back then is gone. Shane O'Sullivan it was. Our recruiting manager now is Wayne Hughes, doing a good job I must say.

That pick (no.4) was what St.Kilda gave us (along with a dud named Sam Cranage) when we traded Aaron Hamill. Shit happens you've got to say.

I thought we only got Sam Cranage without any picks because we needed to get something because Hamill was going to walk to the PSD anyway.

Nope - we definitely got Cranage and pick 4 (Livingston) in exchange for Hamill.
Thanks for backing me up there, I was 99% sure we got pick 4 as well.

To be honset with you, if a club isn't going to give us a good deal in trade time, I'd rather get nothing than a short exchange. At least it makes the clubs have to earn the player they are getting, rather than sell out for a short price and get another player in the PSD. We made Essendon "earn" the right to get Scott Camporeale (through the PSD), rather than get short changed and then have them get a 2 in 1 deal. This is just my personal opinion anyway.

No way definately only got Sam Cranage it was that or nothing, i would of preferred nothing, why do you think it hurt so much losing Hamill!
Sorry just checked and we did get draft pick 4 for Hamill as well, Surprise because i like others thought and have been led to believe we got nothing for him, then again i suppose Livingston was nothing. Apologies jeremias.

One of richmonds good pick ups in coughland. I know he has been injured 4 years but wsa still a good player for pick 25.

Would love kerr or mcphee. With what calrton has been over the last 5 years these guys might have only played 2 seasons.
Oh well.
