2002 Draft

Yesterday I reconstructed the 2002 draft reconfiguring the selections before and after Carlton was stripped of 4 draft selections between trade week and the 2002 national draft. From my reconstruction it appears that Fremantle lost a draft pick. Is this correct? Did it have anthing to do with the salary cap breaches of 2001 and part of the fine which included your club not being able to draft Fabian Francis in the 2002 Pre Season Draft??

My question revolves around your 3rd round pick. Before any trades and adjustments by the AFL, the picks looked like this:

34 Carlton
35 St Kilda
36 Richmond
37 Fremantle
38 Western Bulldogs
39 Sydney
40 Hawthorn

Carlton swapped pick 18 for 31 and Baraby French with Port. After trade week Carlton were stripped of picks 1,2,31 and 34 therefore,

35 became 31 which Stk had traded to Port who ontraded to the Kanga's
36 became 32 which Richmond had traded to Adelaide
37 should have become 33 for Fremantle but didn't
38 then became 33 which was used by the Bulldogs
39 then became 34 which was used by Sydney; and
40 was traded by Hawthorn to the Bulldogs and became 35.

If the AFL didn't strip you of your 3rd round pick in 2002, what happened to it?? Thanks in advance for any clarifications.

We probably didn't use it

That's not the answer. You used picks
48 Greg Edgcumbe
55 Ryan Crowley
63 Brett Doswell
75 Not utilised as this was the spot left open for Fabian Francis in the PSD.
Edit: Also from AFL 2003
82 Not utilised
87 Not utilised

You were right about losing the draft pick. We were banned from the 3rd round? because of the SC breach in 2001 as well as losing the PSD selection.

It was a two edged sword in a way as not only do you lose the pick in the round you are banned from trading into it.

It was part of the reason we ended up paying so much for Headland.

Thanks Ripper, I was confident you would know the reason why. Did you guys lose the pick before trade week? Carlton was obviously punished sometime between trade week and the draft. Why was it a third rounder? An arbitary choice by the AFL and your breach was nowhere near as great as Carlton's?

Yep , it was plucked out of the air as far as I can make out. We were then banned from the PSD the day before it happened, becuase Vlad reckoned We would bust the cap if we picked up Fabian Francis. When Swabbie showed that we wouldn't the reason was changed to breaking the cap the previous year and added to the previous penalty.
We were in effect punished twice for the same offence.

Swabbie was proven correct at the end of 2002 as we still had ~$300k to spare.

Edit* We were banned from the PSD in 2001, so the draft penalties were imposed then for the 2002 trade & draft.

We still did alright that year picking up Headland , Schammer ,Crowley & Dodd & Gilmore as Rookies.

Smartie did allright with what he had to work with. :thumbsu:
