What do yous expect from the mighty crows in 2002?

Weve improved every year since 99, are the crows gonna be a force again in 2002?

The new forward line must be effective from day 1 for us to get anywhere. Fitzy must stay fit for most of the season (hopefully he stays fit, plays every game and kicks 60 goals ;)). I dont know about Schell, but Slosh could make an impact at CHF. I expect better things from Perrie this season, hes starting to come of age. Hes very athletic....he just cant kick! (Hopefully Coach Jars can rectify that).

What does everyone expect of young Reilly?? Dont know much about him, will he play in 2002??

Mcleod must play like he did this year for us to be a force, and Riccuito....if he can play the way he did in the 2nd part of the season, we are a great chance at a top 4-5 position.

I cant wait to hopefully see a full season of Johnson, and James Gallacher is developing into a very good player. If the Birdman fires, the team stays fit, things could be rosey in 2002, we have too good of a playing list to come 8th.

My tip - Crows to come 5th!

We have the players to get us into at least the final eight IF Ayres has learnt his lesson and allows players to be more independent. The minute he ties players down to a rigid defensive style of play we don't do well. It was so evident last year that in the few games where players were trusted to experiment and attack we ended up winning with style.

We should make the eight. After this years's finals fiasco I'm reluctant to be more daring.

I believe we can make the finals. To do that we need to do the following:

Win a minimum of 13 games.
Get 2 or 3 wins on the board by Round 4. I'm sick of us losing the first 3-5 gamesof the season.
We can't experiment too much in the preseason games - particularly in attack. We have to develop a forward line structure that works, so that the team is confident and settled by Round 1.
A more positive game plan.
Improvements in skill level and kicking for goal.
More four quarter efforts.

Now that I think about, here are two more area's the AFC can improve in:

1. Win more games at Football Park. Our record at home this year was terrible.

2. Win one or two more games away than we did in 2001. I was pretty happy with our away record this year and if we can improve on that it would be a bonus.

I heard a bit of an interview with Matthew Clarke on the radio today, where he said they're trying to overcome the slow starts the Crows have had in recent years. They have brought out the footies very early in pre-season training, and have had a lot of running drills which relate more to playing a game of footy, rather than just pounding the pavement.

Also Roo should have a better year. Whether it was injury, Rehn's absence, or off-field sponsor difficulties (West End/CUB rivalry), hopefully this year his head will be tuned in to playing his best footy. A true Captain's performance in 2002 will go a long way to getting into the finals.

Macca's attitude should rub off on his mates. At the Club Champion dinner he stated that they had unfinished business, and if that determination continues, things look promising.

Without trying to be too ambitious tbis year I think we should win the grand final by at least 12 goals. Then we can enjoy the last half and get completely maggotted before the game ends.

The boy Gallagher (sp?) is the one to look out for this year. Now that we've displaced the softcocks, the sleepers like McGregor, Johncock and Handby etc. will raise their collective hands and say................, 'I/we shall be the one/s.'

But seriously har, har, har, if we can win a few more games at home I'll be happy. We need Fitzy, Schell or someone to fire. We're just one focal point away fron being a top 3 to 12 side.

Spogs - don't expect much from Schell, this guy is not rated even by Dockers fans! Fitzy is the hope, we'll do OK if he plays a reasonable number of games & avoids injury.

Crow54 - Roos problem was not so much injury as incomplete recovery from injury. He broke a rib & when that healed his ribcage muscles were too taught - he could not manage sustained heavy breathing - so he could not run out games. Lasted for about 8 weks - but Roo ran out the year fine.

Jerome - you list of things to improve is spot on. Look at it as room for improvement - yet even without doing these things well this year we made the 8. A small and entirely achievable improvement in the areas you mention should net Crows at leats an extra couple of wins - 14 wins might get us into the top 4!

ozgeek - spot on about the gameplay. But Ayres did acknowledge that the changed style was the way to go - so he should stick with it next season, surely?

Dont forget, when Pavlich was linked to the crows for that 2 week period, the docker geeks said he was overrated. Once we all found out he wasnt a target anymore, he was rated a star again :D

Good point QT

The minute we start believeing the likes of Sabre and Kuepper we are in trouble:D ;)

Must admit I agree with most of the views on this thread - particularly ok's comments. Also, Jerome was correct in saying we need to improve our home record & maintain our good away record (minus loosing to Freo in the last round!)

IF everything goes well injury / form wise, there is no reason why the Crows can't improve further in 2002. McLeod believes he has unfinished business, Roo is now over his injury problems & with Goody, surely must give us about the 3 best midfielders as a collective group (on a par with Brisbane). Also, we have useful supports in the likes of Johnson who would appear to be over his hamstring problems (touch wood), the consistent Edwards, the 2002 wildcard Burton (burning in pre-season), the evergreen Bickley, the emerging Gallagher & the under-rated taggers in Stenglein & Shirley. This is important, as the midfield is the key to modern footy. Also, Massie & Nelson give us a bit more depth & there is the forgotten Bode & Ladhams who know they must lift in 2002.

On the rucks, still reckon Clarke could do more around the ground, but he does usually give us 1st use of the ball. I was impressed by Biglands, when he was given an opportunity. Marsh should be given a big kickup the arse!

The backline will hold it together with Bassett (now Ayres has given up playing him forward) & Hart the main stays. Hewitt gained some confidence @ CHF & has importantly released Stevo up forward. Should look to blooding Handby & Johncock (as that pacy backman we need).

Forward line is the most concern/risk for 2002 with Jars retirement. Stevens needs the support of Perrie (who better be doing extra goal kicking practice with Jars) & Fitzgerald. I see Fitzy & Stevo rotating the key forward positions with Perrie the floater. We will need the rotating midfielders to contribute many of the goals. I don't have Schell in my 1st team plans.

I see only Brisbane, Essendon, Hawks & Port ahead of us. I reckon the next pack is pretty even with us close to the likes of Richmond, Sydney, Collingwood, Carlton. So we everything going OK we could finish about 5th (or even higher if one of the top teams falls over), but if things don't go to plan we could just miss the eight. Just behind this group, I have the Kangaroos, Bullies & Melbourne. IMO, Geelong, West Coast, Freo & St Kilda are not likely to make the eight.

We have got to create an avenue up forward.
Fitzy and Schell and even Stevo to less extent are the key to the crows winning 13 games.

Its a pretty big ask on the younger lads but this will be where we will get burnt by other sides if the ball comes straight back out again.

I know Robran Vardy and Jarman were patchy and we still made the finals last year but there will be a lot more sides competing for the final spot in the eight this year than last.

I reckon our other lines are as good as any going around but our forwards have not run like a well oiled machine since Mods has left.

Kicking straight and injury will hinder our games like every year but at least we have kicking straight "in our own destiny"

All I want for Christmas is to win the first three before absolutely pole axing the Bombers in round four. A good start has been hard to come by in recent years.

My tip at this early stage for the Brownlow?
Macca with Brett Burton to push him in the Club Champion Award

On the coaching front? This is Ayres last chance. Im hoping he will toughen up up the second tier players this year and bring the creme to the top.

7TH ON PERCENTAGE

With various mid season reviews going on around the place, I thought it might be interesting not only to review the side, but look back on our expectations from 6 months ago.

Win a minimum of 13 games - on track.

Get 2 or 3 wins on the board by Round 4. I'm sick of us losing the first 3-5 gamesof the season. - Done.

We can't experiment too much in the preseason games - particularly in attack. We have to develop a forward line structure that works, so that the team is confident and settled by Round 1.
- Well the team is confident and the forward line has been flexible and fairly reliable. The forward structure is still far from perfect.

A more positive game plan. - Adelaide is at its best when it plays attacking footy.

Improvements in skill level and kicking for goal. - Skils across the field and at ground level have improved. innacuracy is still a problem.

More four quarter efforts. - Still need to work on that.

Win more games at Football Park. Our record at home this year was terrible. - on track. The game against Brisbane was the most enjoyable game at FP in years!

Win one or two more games away than we did in 2001. I was pretty happy with our away record this year and if we can improve on that it would be a bonus. - Wins against the Bullies at CS and Carlton have been real bonuses. we should knock off the Dee's too.

At 8-3 we are going well. We have also been very lucky with injuries - Hentschel & Fitzy have been our main concerns but we are doing fine without them. The development of Welsh, Johncock and Doughty have also beena real boost for the club. The forward line is still the main weakness. Full marks must go to our defence lead by basset, hart & Smart and our midfield forour improvement this year. There's still more work to be done however.

Oh shivers, I didn't think any guy in their right mind would use the name QT.:o

Well you were right about that

No-one has ever accused QT of being in his right mind

He came back for a while as Abel Xavier as well.

Crows on track for a 16-6 finish in my view. If we win one of the next two we then have three in a row at home

Away games against Sydney and Geelong do not look as imposing and should be winnable given the right attitude.

Similarly Richmond and Essendon at home can be won whislt teh Bulldogs will put up a lot of fight

Hopefully we won't have to rely on beating Freo in Round 22 to get a top four berth

Once in the top four - we CAN do ANYTHING

I'm Excited

I'm with you jars a top 4 finish is staring us in the face all we have to do is grab it,

I would also like to see us bury a team into the ground more often when they are done just like the last quarter against the hawks last week,

Simon Goodwin to reignite his left foot when kicking for goal on the run [a sight surely missing]

Graham Johncock to win the rising star award or at least a bloody nomination

Bunji not to get the most votes in the brownlow i couldn't bare the pain, i guess none of us could least of all Andrew himself

A third flag would be nice also, if not this year next year will do.

I must say I certainly miss QT, his antics and vibrant personality has been greatly lacking from the Bigfooty boards...he was simply a wonderful poster...we are all sadder for his absence :(
