nathan bock is a young player on the rise and he will develop into a good player

Hopefully his form in the WWT finals was just an unfortunate time for the lad. But Iam not one of Bocks harsher critics on this forum, lam willing to give him some time to see how he develops.

After saying this l believe that Mathew Smith has more potential to play as a key defender than N Bock. Smith has been unfairly criticized on this forum and 90% is by those who haven’t seen him play in 3 years at the Sturt Football Club.

FF: Edwards - Welsh - Biglands

HFF: Hentschell - M.Stevens - Reilly

C: Burton - Ricciuto - Goodwin

HBF: Johncock - McGregor - Bassett

FB: Torney - Rutten - Hart

R: Clarke - McLeod - Thompson

Interchange: Perrie - Bode - Begley - S.Stevens

I Would Be Happy with that Side.I Have not named him but Expect Shirley To Line up on Judd.

Seeing the likes of Perrie, S. Stephens, Torney & Burton in pretty much everybody's "best" side for next year is enough to make me cry. It just shows how far away we are from a flag.

I would be telling M. Stephens it is time to hang up the boots. We need to be getting games into the young guys.

From the Backline...and yes I'm back - go Dogs

Bassett Rutten Hart
Edwards McGregor Begley
Reilly Roo Goodwin
Johncock Stevens, M Hentschel
Burton Welsh Biglands

Clarke McLeod Thompson

Mattner Perrie Skipworth Bode

always an interesting exercise....and open for plenty of debate....
I've left out Watts who needs another year....but if Stevo doesn't line up then he would come into the 22. Pretty much my CHF would be Stevo/Perrie/Watts.
I've left out Jericho who needs to toughen up b4 getting a spot..but he is closer than some others.
Bock is in the same catagory...and I've omitted Doughty purely because he annoys the ******** out of me with his decision making.
But Watts/Jericho/Bock/Doughty/Hudson are pretty much my emergencies.

As for the others -

Torney
Massie
Shirley
Stevens
Gallager
Ladhams etc

well - give them a game if there's injuries - but they're not the future of the club

Krueger and Schuback are unknowns at this point (I know Chewwy played a couple but......??)

As for the side I've picked - Basset looks ok since released from FB.....Begley is a definite 200 game player if he can get his body right.....Goody across centre is interesting - it might just be how it pans out with rotations...Stiffy can win a game for you if given the opportunities up forward but can virtually play anywhere.....Hentschel falls into the same catagory as stiffy.....Burton should have an explosive device inserted in his head which goes off if he moves further than 60m from goal.. :p .harsh but he needs to be played on the FF line or nowhere...and Rhett resting up forward will at least force the tallest defender to him - shuffling the defenders down for Stevo/Welsh/Trent....I'm always a big wrap for a resting ruckman 'cos it takes the "tall pressure" off the other guys.
I think Mattner is going to be a fine player - I love the way he takes players on - just needs to cut down his mistakes ......Perrie can play back or fwd - Skippy can provide Midfield rotation - and Bode can be a pinch hitter.

Hudson is the interesting one....cant find a spot for him but needs to be developed for 2006 if nothing else eventuates

Assuming M Stevens injury doesn't improve

F: Welsh, Hentschel, McLeod
HF: Johncock, Perrie, Burton
C: Goodwin, Ricciuto, Reilly
HB: Torney, McGregor, Begley
B: Bassett, Rutten, Hart
R: Clarke, Thompson, Edwards
I: Hudson, S Stevens, Doughty, Schuback

F: Welsh, Stevens, Edwards
HF: Burton, Perrie, Hentschel
C: Johncock, Ricciuto, Reilly
HB: Goodwin, McGregor, Begley
B: Bassett, Rutten, Hart
R: Clarke, Thompson, McLeod
I: Biglands/Hudson (pre-season duel), Torney, S Stevens/M Smith (pre-season duel), Bode,

Emerg : Massie Jericho Shirley

Biglands and Hudson to duke it out over the pre-season with Clarke rested until the season proper

I think Bock is a dud so believe STevens and Smith could contest for the tall bench spot in the side.

Johncock and Burton to change on teh wing and half forward to really confuse the opposition.

Pretty strong side if we have no injuries. Not going to happen though

Maybe we can get a decent player in the PSD as well.

Edited to inlcude Bode who I forget about. Rate him as a very solid player.

What would your forward six look like Kane if Mark Stevens’s injury doses not improve? Would you change it greatly or just swap one player for another.

If Mark Steven can play l would like to see him at fall Forward or as a defender, if the club decided to use him as a forward, then l would like Hentschel to be played as that extra tall defender (half back flank for a season or two, then he can be moved into the forward line), If M Stevens can not recover from injury then Trent Hentschel should be used in the forward 50.

Ok, I am going to throw my hat into the ring as a wannabe coach,
FB: Bassett Rutten Torney

HB: Mattner McGregor Reilly

C: Johncock Ricciuto Goodwin

HF: Mcleod Perrie Hentschel

FF: Watts Welsh Schuback

Ruck: Clarke Thompson Edwards
I/C: Begley Hart Biglands Jericho/Doughty

Of course this is pretty subjective, but as Craig has shown his liking for attacking Half Back line, I see its crucial to have players that have good skills and a penetrating kick in making that line effective. Doughty would be my tagging option, and I think Hart will need to be slowly introduced to the 2005 season. Schuback is iffy in some arguments on here, but he would be amongst our better crumbing forwards, and he and Mcleod and Edwards would be the best we have, something we need. The rest of the team is self explainitory. Pick it pieces at your pleasure!! :D

I really rate M Stevens, so it would be an absolute bonus if he came up. I would probably structure the side like as follows:

F: Welsh, M Stevens, McLeod
HF: Burton, Perrie, Hentschel
C: Goodwin, Ricciuto, Reilly
HB: Johncock, McGregor, Begley
B: Bassett, Rutten, Hart
R: Clarke, Thompson, Edwards
I: Hudson, S Stevens, Torney, Schuback

I agree with Jars about rotations. We need to rotate the likes of Macca, Birdman, Goody, Roo, Reilly, Stiffy, Thompson, Edwards, Begley & Schuey to confuse the opposition & keep the players fresh. eg. Goody, Stiffy, Reilly & Edwards between all 3 areas; Roo, Macca, Schuey, Burton & Thompson between midfield & forward line. The lesser players would rotate also off the bench.

well im not going to bother with a team as of yet... mainly because i cant be bothered and i want to wait and see who we draft in both the national draft and the pre-season draft before deciding on a side.

I just have one question, there has been one glaring omission from a few of the teams and that is Matthew Bode, besides Riccuito i rate him as probably our best finder of the ball at ground level and expect to see him improve next season when Craig shows some confidence in him. Was this deliberate or did some of you just forget him?

I had him on the bench helping out with midfield rotations...........that then leaves the amount of game time he gets in his own hands....I think Bodey's best is as good as anyone's - (except Roo).........but I think his worst is just plain lazy.

As I said before, this is a fairly subjective topic, I like Bode alot, and as you stated he hunts the ball better than anyone in the AFC, baring Roo and Mcleod. But IMHO, I think Matty has/is falling into the "depth" catergory( along with Ladhams, Massie, Burton and Skipworth)at the AFC now, where he will cover the injured or unless his form in the SANFL is white hot, then he selects himself. These guys have all been in the AFL system for 5 to 7 years now, and for one reason or another haven't established themselves as regular starters, and I am not sure how much longer the AFC can afford to keep them listed?!?! So for that reason Matty Bode and the likes get shifted down a rung and we start moving the younger players through and give them a crack.

I think Bode would still be in my starting 22, I was always perplexed by the decisions Gary made regarding him. We have to remember that we've hardly seen him play a full game in ages.

And when we did he got got 20 odd touches in each one fo those games and kicked a couple of goals.

Matthew Bode is under-rated

It was against the Bulldogs and he was by far the best on ground.
I cant believe he doesnt get a regular game, I have said this so many times before, he is a goal kicking midfielder, with our lacklustre forward line, we need his one or two goal a game contribution.

It would be good if anyone was really really bored to try and put these teams together to come up with some consensus...would be interesting to see where the similarities are and really pinpoint the differences.
ie bode / burton / where to play hentschel and stiffy.
btw I'm not volunteering ! ;) :D

I had Mathew bode in my side (forward pocket) and have stated in a different threat that Mathew Bode could win the Club Champion award if he was given a go ( with a strong pre season from him as well).

By no means is M Bode a scrub and YES he is underrated and can become a very valuable player in the AFC midfield

Give us a break mate:p

We are suffering from Footy withdrawals:(

I'll give it a go after christmas then

Heres some discussion points:
1. Who will be the 4th assistant coach - why is it taking so long?
2. Of the recycled players in SANFL who would Adelaide most seriously consider?
3. Why Mattner will be AA wigman in 2005 :p (had to throw it in)
4. Can S.Stevens play as a 3rd defender
5. Craig talked about new coaching innovations ie Charlie Walsh matchday, female asst coaches... where are the innovations?
