1. We will only have 3 assistants. 3rd assistant is taking this long because we got the 2 key appointments now we are taking our time in choosing the best possible fit. Triggy said that it might take as long as 4 weeks (he said that once other appointments were announced)
2. Not sure we will. I guess Ackland and maybe Thomas woudl be the 2 players we might look at.
3. It'll never happen. Not in 2005 not EVER;):p
4. I think he can and I would say that he looked better in defence than he did in attack this year. I don't know about others but I thought he was pretty good in defence in round 22 against Port. Didn't get a lot of touches but I thought he was very effective especially in close.
5. I think tis more to do with the structure of football department and rather than have assistant coach for each area it will be something different. I guess we will have to wait until pre-season at least to find out

Well done - pity though on you judgement of Mattner ;)

I'll give it a go after christmas then

Heres some discussion points:
1. Who will be the 4th assistant coach - why is it taking so long?
2. Of the recycled players in SANFL who would Adelaide most seriously consider?
3. Why Mattner will be AA wigman in 2005 :p (had to throw it in)
4. Can S.Stevens play as a 3rd defender
5. Craig talked about new coaching innovations ie Charlie Walsh matchday, female asst coaches... where are the innovations?
1. Apparantly the 1st choice for the remaining assistant is overseas on holidays, I gather contemplating their decision.
2. Depend on who we draft to balance up the squad. Better not be Ackland as I want my carton of beer. ;)
3. Can't see it happening myself, but can see Mattner continuing to improve. Has a great attack on the ball, so just needs to find consistency as drops out of the game too much.
4. Yes, though we have Bassett who can do that role too. Reckon he could be handy player coming off the bench given his ability to play both ends. Crunch year for him though.
5. I believe he is going to change the role the assistant workload is going to be broken up ... however, hopefully he can find an edge - perhaps higher level of fitness to run out games would be a good start.
4.

1. I heard they're doing some psychological profiling crap to work out the best fit from the candidates..you know...circles of influence and all that ...........give me strength
2. I would consider Paul Thomas....and possibly Cain Ackland with a PS pick if he was still available......we need to find out what happened to the big fella...a few years ago he was unlucky not to break into the PaP side...next minute he's delisted.......did he drop his bundle ????.......maybe he really can't play....you would think the AFC would have done their homework......but I'd grab him with a PS pick if still there.
3. Mattner......don't larf....I'm a Marty Fan.......He's a hard unit with plenty of pace....just sometimes his brain writes cheques his body can't cash !!!...eliminate his mistakes and he can be top 5 in the B&F
4. S Stevens as a third defender ?????........why do I care who the Port Magpies have down back ? enough said ????
5. some people will put anything on their resume to get a job !!!

Somehow I doubt the Crows will backtrack on themselves and pick Thomas - but I think another club may provide him the opportunity.

Re Ackland will Adelaide carry 4 Ruckmen on the list proper ( they will if they get Wood/Deluca/Meeson) or would they prefer a rookie lisr ruckmen - I just can't envisage Adelaide going with Ackland, but they might wait till the PS b4 making the final decision.

Johncock and Burton to change on teh wing and half forward to really confuse the opposition.

Confuse them how. Which opposistion player they're going to turn the ball over to? They both should be played at FF and FP ONLY

I would invite Cain Ackland to train with us and if he proves to us that he is a hard worker and busts his guts on the training track then I would pick him up in the pre-season draft or rookie list him (He is still eligible). Otherwise, I would say thanks but no thanks.

Stewy was on 5AA today and he was asked why hasn't Cain made it and Stewy made a strong point of it that Cain needs to work harder and get himself fitter if he wants to play AFL and unless he pulls his finger out he will never make it.

Lazy talented ruckmen - dime a dozen - can occupy your list for years (as port can vouch for)

Could work his but of in PS to get picked up, and then return to his personality characteristics.

I am guessing that is not Layton…well he guesses any way

Mathew Connell that a bit harsh, he did win a gold jacket Robert Shaw loved him, even if no one else did

B: Begley, Rutten, Bassett
HB: Reilly, McGregor, Goodwin
C: Mattner, Ricciuto, Hart*
HF: Hentschel, M.Stevens/Perrie/Watts**, Johncock
F: Welsh, Biglands***, Edwards
R: Clarke, McLeod, Thompson
I: Bode, Skipworth****, Burton, Hudson/Perrie*****
E: Bock, Schuback, Doughty

* Can go into defence if needed but these days plays his best football up the ground.
** Stevens is clearly the best option if fit, Watts is the long term replacement but isn't ready yet. Perrie fills in if both options are unavailable.
*** Full forward is a bit of a worry. As many have said Hentschel is wasted there, Welsh is inconsistent. Need a big body there so that leaves Bock, Biglands and Krueger. None are ideal but I think Biglands deserves first crack
**** There's lots of flankers but not a lot of real midfielders in the side. I think Skipworth can play in the square and that's why he gets in ahead of Doughty, Shirley, Torney etc
***** Relief for Clarke. Either Stevens to FF, Perrie to CHF or Biglands stays at FF and Hudson plays as the number 2 ruckman. The other option is Bock to play and go to FF and Biglands to ruck.

Harsh on Connell.

Dont know how you could leave out David Gallagher. He should be Captain of that side.

Bock's young and shows plenty of potential...am I the only one who can see it?

He looks like he has a good head on his shoulders and can take a decent mark...
He reminds me a lot of Ken McGregor in his early days. Lots of flaws, lots of potential. 2005 will tell. Got to say there's some serious doubts, but I'm not writing him off.

I think you're right about having a good head on his shoulders, he always seems be thinking about what he does (and I mean that in a good way, not a "too slow" bad way) and he works hard.

As for the rest of the discussion - all I can say is, the team(s) posted here just remind me that we've got a pretty decent if not premiership bunch of players and there's something to look forward to. I want to see Hentschell and Reilly take another step, I want to see Begley fit and on the field, I want to see S Thompson in the tricolours. I'd really like to see Turbo back...

It would be good if anyone was really really bored to try and put these teams together to come up with some consensus...would be interesting to see where the similarities are and really pinpoint the differences.
ie bode / burton / where to play hentschel and stiffy.
btw I'm not volunteering !

Mad Dog, you lazy son-of-a-bitch! :D

Here goes then, the AFC Board's Consensus 2005 Best Crows' Team...

Not a bad side that. If we have a decent run with injuries and are in form then we could sneak into the 8.
