I would have almost had them going on level before Murphy was tagged out of 3 succesive games before his injury. The tag went to him and his form really dropped off. The contrast while followed by Van Berlo is a good one. Murphy had 5 touches in a half, Pendles had 29 possesions and a crucial goal.

Wasn't tagged out in St Kilda game. Went forward and had 5 score assists. Changed his role and made us more dangerous.

Pendles was tagged out by Carazzo but I still think he is probably the best. People take form too seriously and ignore what I'll call average performance, which is what they put up on a regular basis over an extended period of time, NOT what they have produced most recently.

Pendlebury has the best average performance, followed by Murphy then Swallow then Daisy IMO. Daisy's best is as good as the first two, but he doesn't hit it as often as the first three, Swallow is remarkably consistent.

Possibly the biggest story from the 2005 draft, is that Hawthorn had 5 picks in the first 22, and has only ended up with one player (Birchall) ranked in anyone's top 20. The draft was a major flop for the club, a flop that I believe has cost them at least one flag.

For those playing at home, Xavier Ellis was pick 3, Beau Dowler 6, Max Bailey 18, and Beau Muston 22.

Ah well, them's the breaks.

Why do people ignore players taken in the rookie draft? Priddis would easily be top 10 if the whole draft from that year were re-done, and Jack would be in the top 20 at worst. Toovey and Hocking wouldn't be far off the top 20, and probably McGlynn too.

Throw a blanket over the next half a dozen.

Blind. He had 17 touches and was ineffectual in the match. Clinton Jones was given 1 vote by both coaches that night too.

Pendles was smashed by Carazzo this year, but I struggle to remember too many other taggers getting the better of him.

Quality key forward >>>>>> everyone other than top 5-10 player in the game.

1. Pendlebury
=2. Kennedy
=2. Murphy
4. Thomas
5. Priddis

Swallow and Ryder in the next couple.

What does "quality key forward" actually mean?

Kennedy has kicked 4 or more goals in 11 out of 95 games.

He dines out big time on one single bag of 10 goals.

Applying that logic, Petrie (11 bags of 4+ in 208 games) isn't a quality key forward either.
Both provide a good target, consistently take marks, and kick goals (Kennedy hasn't gone goal-less since 2010).
The end.

Rookies always tend to be overlooked in these things, wouldn't take it personally to be honest.

Most people probably just look at the ND order to refresh their memories, not the Rookie Draft.

No doubt in the top 10.

Strong draft on reflection.

Pendlebury, Murphy are both elite midfielders.

Swallow, Kennedy, Jones, Thomas, Priddis, Birchall all A grade midfielders

Ryder and Clark are key talls.

Jack, Hurn, Varcoe, Vince, Douglas all good footballers.

We have had a few draft shockers but this is def up there for us in our finest hour. Had a few high picks and got absolutely no one. No one. If only..

Bailey has shown a bit, but obviously his body fails him, constantly. Getting Ryder or Clark instead of Dowler would have been enough to get another flag IMO.

As for the separate rookie argument, it's easy to forget rookie picks. In current form Jack has to be top 10.

Well this was a few months ago, but anyway Petrie played in the back line for a large chunk of his career and also spent some time in the ruck, im surprised someone with over 18k posts would make this comparison....

1. Pendlebury (5)
2. Murphy (1)
3. Swallow (43)
4. Thomas (2)
5. Kennedy (4)
6. Priddis (ROOK)
7. Clarke (9)
8. Birchall (14)
9. Ryder (7)
10. Vince (32)
