Draft Review 2008 - Re-do the 2008 draft

Anyone who has Ziebull near the top 10 is being seduced by him being a captain.

Guy is a dead set plodder who occassionally hits someone to get the tough tag

If Clarkson was his coach he would be playing the Hodge type utility role and be in the top 5.

sloane defs steal of the draft
2nd biggest. Hannerbury has had a better career to date. However I will give you Slane seems to have gone past him now, but doesn't quite have the same body of work yet

I'd actually back Sloane in to play a decent GF. I'd easily pick him in front of Hanners.

Was borderline BOG in 2012....
I have no recollection or memory of that particular match. I do remember how poorly he played in the 2014 & 2016 deciders though.

Both false. There's no KPD with a better kick than him. In the first few rounds of this season he was defending poorly (turned it around since), but across 2014 and 2015 he was beaten fewer than five times.

Steven May is better and a better kick

Thanks for covering that one! There would only be one KPD I'd take ahead of Hurls which is obviously Rance. Then it'd be a three sided coin flip between Hurls, McGovern & Talia. Weitering would also be tempting.

With all things considered (Injuries/suspensions/consistency)

1. Rory Sloane
2. Daniel Hannebury
3. Nic Naitanui
4. Michael Hurley
5. Steele Sidebottom
6. Dayne Beams
7. Luke Shuey
8. Stephen Hill
9. Tom Lynch
10. Daniel Rich
Get Sidebottom the **** out of the top 10, every player you have listed after him is better than that weak front runner.

I wouldn't. Rich would be a weapon in a good side, I can't just forget Jack Watts's years of absolute garbage.
Sure Rich used to be way better but here I'm talking about right now and moving forward. Seriously apart from that booming left boot is Rich anything that much above average as a footballer? If you watch the game v Sydney he has also gone soft pulling out of contests.

I never thought he would make it but Watts has absolutely improved out of sight in the last couple of years.

National draft 2008 line up
B: MHurley PDavis NJetta
HB: DRich JTrengove MBroadbent
C: SHill DHannebery SSidebottom
HF: TLynch JWatts DBeams
F: MWalters TVickery SMotlop
R: NNaitanui RSloane LShuey
INT: DZaharakis HHartlett LShiels JZiebell
EME: JRedden JRoughead SSavage

Defence: Would be one of if not the best defence in the Comp. has 3 real quality keys with Davis, Trengove and Hurley, plus some real good shutdown in Jetta and good run from Broadbent and Rich.

Midfield: Definitely the best thing about the team. Amazing depth and amazing balance. Great outside run from hill, Sidebottom, zaharakis and Hartlett. And with some of the best clearance players in the Comp such as Sloane, ziebell and Shuey as well as adding one of the more damaging rucks in the game would control most midfields.

Forward: For sure is the weakes part of the team. Is lacking some presence and a real KPF. Watts and Vickery are the main talls and would hopefully provide an okay contest to the above average smalls of Walters and Motlop.

Overall this team with the age it is at and experience it has I could see easily being a top 4 in the afl team with the forward line the only thing stopping it from becoming the best team in the whole Comp.

Im not sure Sloane hasnt had the support with Danger and Thompson, looks more like they were holding him back.
Maybe but nearly every gun midfielder plays better with better players around them. Judd with cuz and etc, selwood with ablett, bartel. I just think there were few other factors for sloanes breakout.

The guys at afl.com.au have redone the 2008 draft and just from watching it's clear to see two things.

  1. How much conjecture there is around the selections
  2. The sheer weight of quality in that draft that causes such discussion
I disagree with both of them on quite a few of their selections.

My 2 cents

  1. Nic Nat
  2. Hurley
  3. Sloane
  4. Hannebery
  5. Rockliff - Think this was a glaring omission from both of them - 2 x B&F, 1 x AA. He's a gun
  6. Beams
  7. Sidebottom
  8. Shuey
  9. Davis
  10. Walters
Unlucky
Zaka
Picken
S.Hill
T.lynch

Still top quality AFL talent
Hartlett
Jetta
Rich
Watts
Yarran
Ziebell
Ballantyne
Roughead
Motlop
M.Robinson
