Should we have a dedicated thread for this topic? there has been discussion on a number of threads already so I will start one here.

Our pick 4 seems locked in altho with Freo you can never be certain. Its what we do with the rest of our picks is the interesting thing.

Being realistic we need talls but the best ones - Black, Butcher, Panos, Carlisle and Talia will be gone by our second round. Do we go for the best of the rest of the talls - Craig, Fitzpatrick, Griffiths - or for another midfielder type.

If I were to take a punt our draft may look something like this:

4. Morabito tall mid or smallish KPF
20. Troy Taylor could be anything
36. Joel Houghton KPF
48. Chris Luff KPD
49. Myles Sewell ready to go mid
52. Dylan McNiel mid

RD

Tom Hill or Cameron Milne develpoment ruck
Simon White mature aged KPD

PSD

Wojo??

I'm not the biggest Sewell or McNeil fan, I think in a deeper draft they would just be rookie listed and for a reason.

But the first four are good picks. As good as it would have been to select each of Taylor, Houghton and Luff one pick later, it seems that their standings in the draft (particularly Taylor and Houghton) have increased a tad lately. But still, their positions have increased for a reason.

I'm impressed by Myles Sewell, I get to see a fair bit of him at VFL level and he has the smarts to become an extremely good inside mid.

Really needs to work on his bulk as he is rake thin but with a couple of AFL pre-seasons i don't see why he couldn't make it.

Would def. not be against picking him up and if we don't i would think someone would this year.

4 Morabito
20 Black/Griffiths
36 Taylor/Bartlett
48 Houghton
49 Donaldson/Luff
52 Hutchings/Ledin
68 PASS for PSD

Is what I'm dreaming about.

What are peoples thought on Dennis-Lane? From what I have seen he is very quick, has good smarts and is a genuine forward. I know we arent desperate for medium forwards but I would think after his excellent season at Subiaco he would have to be a chance around pick 50? I am all for picking best available and surely this would give him a big chance of being drafted

Didnt see him at all during the year but watched him closely in the WAFL Grand Final.

Wasn't overly quick
Was a bit on the skinny side
Bit laconic and doesn't have that natural defensive pressure some indigenous players have (Reminds me of Yarran)

Might have just caught him on a bad day but I would rather rookie him if anything.

I saw Dennis-Lane play a couple of rippers during the year. You don't kick that many goals without some talent. Kicked nearly as many as Frodo did the year before.
Happy to give him a chance but I reckon the Slime might take him.

I would love to see Damien Hayward rookie listed with us. Nearly 202cm and 98kgs. His ruck work in the colts this year was very good. His tap work for WA was also pretty good. He needs to build up his fitness and do more work around the ground, particularly with his marking and positioning but a couple of pre-seasons will get his fitness up to the appropriate level required.

I dont know much about Damian Hayward but I think it is essential we look at at least 1 ruckman in national draft and 1 in rookie draft. We only have 2 specialist ruckman on our list and if Sandi went down we would be stuffed. Is imperative we develop some back up

How highly do you rate t.colyer or m.duncan? they looked to go ok at the
u 18s comp.colyer looks like a traditional goal kicking rover with high pace.
colyer would make our developing engine fairly quick.

We have too many holes to fill to pick up Dennis-Lane IMO. Wouldn't be disappointed if we took him in the rookie draft but for the national draft I'd be looking elsewhere.

Mitch Duncan is a supremely skilled player. Who ever ends up with him will have an awesome player. I'd like him with our second pick but in reality we will need a KPP which he's not.

I don't think he'll last that long anyway

Matt Burgan thinks he is a 2nd to early 3rd round candidate

Admittedly I only saw Dennis-Lane in the GF but he didn't seem overly quick or strong. He's obviously a good kick and elusive so he might be OK at AFL level - I don't see him as a priority though, maybe him or Richo as a rookie would be worthwhile.

According to Matt Burgan so far....

Note: I've grouped the players according to the earliest range Burgan has them in, and the number in the bracket is the latest.

Draft Range: 1 - 10
Trengove
Rohan
Cunnington
Lucas (14)
Moore (20)
Tapscott (18)

Talia (25)
Sheppard (20)

Draft Range: 11 - 25
Bastinac
Reid (45)
Shaw (50)

Dare (late)
Menzel (35)
Robertson (60)
McMillan-Pittard (35)

Fyfe (60)
Delborello (50)
Duncan (40)

Draft Range: 26 - 40
Weedon (late)
Astbury (50)
Grimes (50)
Mackenzie (65)
Thompson (65)

Davies (50)
Harwood (50)
Long (55)
Scott (55)

Draft Range: 50 - late
Norris
Potts (rookie)
M Taylor (rookie)

Gordon (rookie)
MacMillan
Williams (rookie)

Blue = "medium forward" (also includes midfielders)
Red = "tall defender"
Purple = "medium defender" (also includes midfielders)

So that's what Burgan has done so far, and his thoughts are generally a lot more accurate than any phantom draft, given he actually talks to recruiters.

I would love to have another hyphen in the team as we have not had one since Wardell-Johnson in the early days, however agree he may at the back end or rookie draft. What are the chances of Aaron Black still being available at 20? Probably wishfull thinking!

I dont think any chance at all of Black being available at pick 20. Seems to be getting a lot of interest on other clubs boards.
Does Trevor Oliver from East Perth excite anyone? I reckon he is a great talent but from memory his knees are pretty dodgy. He is very skilful and elusive off half back and I reckon would slot nicely into a lot of AFL teams

This may be be a random question but what the hey.

I've been hearing all these little snippets from people about the interview process that draft prospects go through, whereby they ask in depth questions abotu their future, playing styles blah blah blah. Anyway, a question that interested me was the one whereby they asked something along the lines of would you be 100% commited to playing for this club (North in question) and if the draftee in question didn't answer to their defgree of liking then they would cross him off the list altogether.

Now, with this whole Taylor situation, whit Freo having courted him and pretty much set up for him to enter the draft instead of gonig to the GC, what affect would this have on his answer to other clubs? Do you think that if a club like North came and asked him if he would be 100% commited of whatever, when he and his family and even the parole board have almost got their eyes set on Freo, don't you rhink that would affect his answer?

I reckon we would be a pretty got chance of getting him pretty late in the draft becuase of this, as teams would be fearful of the whole parole board, family reluctance to go elsewhere and not having the support network that Freo has obviously already set up for him. Maybe that's why we needed those 48/49/52 picks as our first 3 picks would be used elsewhere

wishfull thinknig, but possible nonetheless.

Just had another look at your Phantom Chris and see you have Sheppard for us at 20. With Taylor at our 3'rd pick that is a very exciting draft for us if it comes off!

I may have been a little biased towards Fremantle in my draft. But you never know what could happen, like last year Walters was regarded as a second rounder but he ended up slipping a fair way.

Is Sam Reid a Key Positional back or just a tall athletic flanker; say MJ type?

It's hard to say really. He plays as a KPP, but rebounding is a feature of his game. He could go either way at AFL level. Someone like a Hargrave or Sam Fisher would probably be the outcome who ever drafts him would be looking for.

I reckon we would be a pretty got chance of getting him pretty late in the draft becuase of this, as teams would be fearful of the whole parole board, family reluctance to go elsewhere and not having the support network that Freo has obviously already set up for him.

I hope you're right, but Fremantle aren't the only team chasing him. If I remember correctly, Port, Collingwood and North have all travelled to the NT to talk to him and his mother. Fremantle seem the most active in chasing him, but we're not the only one unfortunately.

Matt Burgan has him rated in the Pick 8 - Pick 25 range. I can see three things happening; Port take him at 16, Fremantle take him at 20 or North take him with 21/25.

DE I sat next to a Port recruiter in the Melbourne airport lounge about a year ago for ages due to a delayed flight. We got to talking when I saw him watching footy snippets on his laptop.

I asked him almost the exact question. His answer was a little surprising. The question you posed was asked of the kids but the answer meant different things depending on how highly they rated the kids skills and potential.

He said that Port and one other he had worked for (forget which) had a similar approach. They didn't really care that much with the early picks. It might come up if you can't split 2 kids but skill and OVERALL commitment was the main thing. He rightly pointed out that once you've been smashed by a bloke wearing the jumper you used to love the love affair dies pretty quickly (eg Palmer in his 1st Derby).

They believed that dedication to the jumper/club came once you started busting a gut in training and developed relationships with the guys around you. They looked more at your demonstrated commitment to things you'd been a part of (previous junior clubs etc) as an indicator to the future.

The bit that surprised me was when he said that later in the Draft they might start looking at which club the kid followed (more likely from what state he came from) as an indication that you might be putting a guy in a situation he might get some small jolt from.

The thought here being that the latter guys need more things to go right for them to succeed and little things like being picked by the team they supported as a kid might make a small but telling difference.

Overall he said it was rarely considered although clubs are all aware of previous affiliations.

Good work Dolph, interesting stuff. I thought Brad Scott's reported comments (ie that the first question they ask potential draftees is their commitment to North/their jumper) were more for their true believers at a club function than reflecting the reality of their questioning.
I imagine most clubs go along the lines of what the Port recruiter was saying otherwise it'd be too easy for the kids to put North off by giving a lukewarm response. Even Dessie wearing a Freo shirt didn't put off Brisbane back last century.;)
Troy Taylor seems a special case where clubs would have to do their homework. Some clubs would see him as too risky to relocate and only consider him with a late pick. Emma Quayle reckons there will vast differences between clubs in terms of how they rate players between picks 10-30 and clubs will go early on kids others don't rate highly.
Hard to tell whether Taylor could be one of these or a late 3rd rounder.
