Draft Review 2009 - Revisiting the 2009 AFL Draft

Without doing any research the top 3 from this draft would have to stack up pretty well against any draft

2001 - GAJ, Judd & Hodge might be ahead but it's not a landslide

The only one that might compare is 97 (Goodes, Black, Scarlett).

If you include pre-drafted players, there's 1992 (Buckley, Ricciuto, Richardson) and 1994 (McLeod, Akermanis, Lloyd). But I don't think any of them went into the normal draft.

Yeah those ones are all very comparable too

Draft has an all time great top 3, then the depth of a paddle pool behind it
Gunston, Duncan, Cunnington all champs. Talia, Astbury and Sheppard great defenders. Not much after that

If I were to redo this:

1. Fyfe
2. Martin
3. Gawn
4. Talia
5. Cunnington
6. Gunston
7. Duncan
8. Barlow
9. Astbury
10. Grimes
11. Carlisle
12. Sheppard
13. Tuohy
14. Melksham
15. Jetta
16. Stratton
17. Reid
18. Hutchings
19. Duryea
20. Casboult

And as far as a best 22 goes:

Stratton - Astbury - Duryea
Grimes - Talia - Sheppard
Duncan - Cunnington - Tuohy
Melksham - Reid - Jetta
Colyer - Casboult - Gunston
Gawn - Fyfe - Martin
Barlow - Hutchings - Carlisle - Crameri

Defence is really solid without any real great rebounding, midfield is awesome but the forward line is pretty bad

Is Scully the medical sub ? :D

The Magnificent Seven.

Grimes, Carlisle and Sheppard make it a terrific 10.

Not many left now.
Outstanding midfield. Carlisle has no place in the top 10 ahead of Barlow or Astbury

The Fyfe vs Martin is always going to be interesting and while I'm not ever going to hold it against anyone having Fyfe ahead of Dusty, the injuries and games played make it a very hard argument IMO. Both are all time greats and while I'm sure Richmond supporters will laugh, you could swap the team each player was drafted to and I'm sure if Fyfe got to play in that Richmond side like Dusty got to in his absolute prime, he'd have at least 2 Norms and possibly 3 like him.

I do think games played is an important metric though and Dusty is going to smash Fyfe in that one.

They’re both champions but I do think one is pretty clear over the other, and it’s Martin
Nah, it's the one who's won the biggest award in the land twice.

What serious football fan still rates brownlow over coaches’ award?
What football fan, period, thinks the coaches award is bigger than the Brownlow?

Not sure anyone rates the umpires midfield medal.

Coaches votes are miles in front of umpires votes. Brownlow might be a bigger award - the coaches award is a better indication of who is actually the better player.
