Just thought I'd start a thread for us to discuss players we might go after in this years draft etc.

I'll kick things off with, Matthew Watson. 194cm, 99kg, big bodied defender from the Calder Cannons.

The big guerilla we've been waiting for down back. Already a great size and almost looks ready made. He has good speed and a massive kick, drawing a lot of comparisons to Michael Hurley.

If it's guerilla's were after...

Daring, insightul thinker. More familiar with the round ball game, though has proven himself to be adaptable. Strong leadership with an ability to incite passion in fellow team mates. Likely to aid merchandise sales.

This lad would be an excellent pickup if he lasted to our pick. Our big issues this time around is that a LOT of really good youngsters will be gone before we get a sniff.
The good thing is that this year's crop is looking deep enough that we CAN pick up someone worthwhile.

Seriously, Watson looks good.

Ariel Steinberg from Bendigo is a smokie: he hasn't played much but has been impressive. It is very hard to look impressive in a team that gets flogged each week and where the ball moves pretty poorly forward.
This lad can lead well and take a specky, as well as kick the ball very well. At 191 cm, he could be a reasonably cheap pickup.

If we had that chance, I'd consider Sam Day. However, he's going to go in the top half dozen and is a chance to go #1. He is tall, moves well, kicks smoothly (but not that accurately yet) and can jump over tall buildings in a single bound. He simply hasn't done enough yet, especially in the U18 carnival when he looked godlike, but didn't get that much of the pill.

Day's not one I'd be choosing to mind 'flower' too much. Kid can play anywhere down the spine, has freakish athleticism, great hands and will be elite before long.

I don't mind Jack, as you say he is pretty athletic, and he has a bit of mongrel. He's one of those 196-7cm types that through necessity has to play in the ruck for Sandy, whereas I see him potentially as a CHB, FB at AFL level. I'd like to see him do a little bit more around the ground when on-ball, but then again I'd like to see him play out the year in a key defensive post, but that aint going to happen. I think he's a shot to get drafted anywhere from 40 onwards.

Seen Watson play and he has a bit of talent with a big body. Occasionally kicks long to a pack without lowering his eyes first but overall seems a well-rounded backman who would cut it at AFL.

Also, as a side note, made his debut on The Footy Show as part of almost football legends:

NAB AFL Draft: 25 to watch
Lucas Cook
3 March 1992, 194cm, 82kg, North Ballarat Rebels/Hopetoun
An exceptional first game of the championships, in which he kicked five goals against Vic Metro, including three in three minutes in the second quarter, stamped him as a key forward prospect. He leads well, can take a pack mark, and is capable of scooping the ball off the deck. Intensity has been a question, but maybe not now that’s he growing more confident.

Did Paul Daffey leave Fairfax?

Blayne Wilson would address one of our needs.

Ticks one important box because he's from WA. ;)

I'll pretend I'm BlueGibbs2011 for a minute just so we can get a tall such as Tom Lynch or Patrick Karnezis in the second round.

Green has been described as akin to Greg Williams in body type.

That was not a very good comparison at all on the AFL website.

can you see us picking up McLean and Green in consecutive years?

Well, we'll go with the best available player as always, can't see him lasting that long though.

Over on this side of the country Jack Darling is one to look out for. Last year he was touted as a top 3 pick in this years draft but seems to have slid quite a bit.

Darling at 190cm and 90kg has been playing seniors for West Perth in the WAFL for nearly 2 years. He kicked 6 goals on debut last year against swan districts.

There is a good chance he won't slip as far as our pick but if he does hopefully WH and co snap him up.
