2010 Draft Watch Thread

This woman is actually doing the journalism yards when it comes to her research. Beats trawling through bins like some others I could mention - Hutchy and Caro. Splendini should be associating himself with people like this (or vice versa).

Personally, I think she is the best footy print journalist by quite some margin.

I actually enjoy a lot of her articles to do with the draft as she seems to do some decent research and show both the strengths and potential weaknesses of the players. It is refreshing to see some in depth research and thoughts.

18. CARLTON - Matthew Watson
Height: 195cm
Weight: 101kg
DOB: 16/07/92
Club: Calder Cannons (Vic)
Draft range: 15-30
The Blues have a glaring weakness in key defenders and Watson is the best-credentialled player in the draft to fill the breach. Unlike Michael Jamison, who struggles to get the ball, Watson is adept at winning the ball and kicking it 60 metres to position. He has a knack of beating the best opponents by nudging them out with his heavy frame.
34. CARLTON - Luke Parker
Height: 183cm
Weight: 81kg
DOB: 15/10/92
Club: Dandenong Stingrays (Vic)
Draft range: 20-35
Shared the Stingrays' captaincy with Mitch Hallahan. Inside midfielder who is selfless after winning the ball. Dishes out to running teammates. Capable of going forward and kicking goals himself. Considered to be in the top 10 at the start of the season, so it will be interesting to see just where he's taken.
42. CARLTON - Alex Fasolo
Height: 180cm
Weight: 80kg
DOB: 08/06/92
Club: East Fremantle (WA)
Draft range: 30-50
Carlton's premierships from 1979, 1981 and 1982 were built on extroverted personalities who lent the team a cocky, winning tone. Fasolo would complement that history just fine. He's a bouncy midfielder who's had an interrupted season with injury. WA scouts reckon he's got more upside than some prospects ahead of him. He would certainly lend some spirit to the dressing room.
67. CARLTON - Jamie Solly
Height: 190cm
Weight: 94kg
DOB: 27/07/92
Club: Port Adelaide Magpies (SA)
Draft range: 50-rookie
A leading forward who played well in patches in the national under-18 championships but at other times was unsighted. The Blues would be hoping that the injuries that frustrated him throughout 2010 contributed to his up-and-down form.
70. CARLTON - Andrew McInnes
Height: 191cm
Weight: 86kg
DOB: 20/03/92
Club: Dandenong Stingrays (Vic)
Draft range: 60-rookie
Disciplined defender who brings a high level of organisation to his game. Plays short and tall, and loves to run.

That wouldn't be bad at all if this happened! If only luke mitchell slide down 3 more places :P cant wait for tomorrow!

Parker at 34 would be a bargain IMO.
Was a top 6 or 7 prospect early on.

Would be a nice slide to pick 34, a tough inside mid who can go forward and be dangerous would be a very good fit. Could go forward when the amigos go into the middle.

Luke Mitchell at 64 is interesting, I like what I've seen of him but injuries and lack of exposed form this year may see him slide. I'd take him at 42 if available and would be tempted at 34 unless a slider like Parker falls through.

Daffey's selections are a big win for the mighty Baggers, would be happy with this outcome.
Watson a solid defender with a long and accurate kick at last. Parker and Fasolo well just two excellent mids. The only thing I would do different is Chalwell or Menagola as a Tall and a Mature age player after that, would be rapted with that outcome on the day.
Ciao

I'm still being told we will pick Michael Hibberd with one of our later picks if he's available.

ESSENDON appears ready to spring a major surprise by taking Dion Prestia with its first pick in Thursday night's NAB AFL Draft.

Popular opinion has the Bombers taking Shaun Atley with pick No.8, but Calder Cannons regional manager Ian Kyte says the diminutive Prestia could be headed to Windy Hill.

Hopefully some more of these happen and hope that Tape, Smedts or Smith fall to us ;)

here is who i think we need.

pick 18- watson- a tall defender that can read the play and has good skills and a long penetrating kick is exactly what we need.

pick 34- parker, green or hallahan- i dont care which one but one should slid to 34 and we need a tough inside mids to work with mclean and to release judd from the bottom of the packs.

pick 42 -mitchell- might be a bit early but he wont be there at 67 and we need to develop some tall forwards. mitchell would be perfect he can mark and kick goals. like most young forwards need to learn where to lead.

pick 67 -solly- at 190cm he would be a good medium marking forward but we could get lucky and he could grow 2-3cm either way its a win.

pick 70 -wilson- we need a quarterback that can defend and attack with good skill and can set up play wilson will be gold at this pick. i dont know why everyone has gone cold on him. i would be happy to pick wilson at 34 or 42

This is how I think it could end up being for us tomorrow night :)

18. Watson/McCarthy - I think we need Watson's Bigger body more but not worried either way, could see us taking a slider if Hughes highly rates them!

34. Parker/Hallahan - I really see us taking either of these guys depending on which one if any is available, would love either!

42. Karnezis/Fasolo - bit harder too judge this pick till we know who is available these two aren't my preferences for here, but I could see us taking either of them. Hopefully a good slider falls in to our laps:)

67. Mitchell/Wilson - I really hope we have a choice out of these two for this pick even though its a bit unlikely, both of these guys would be bargains for this pick and meet two needs for us!

70. Hibberd/Sewell/Chalwell - I see us taking a mature-ager here and would love one of these 3 guys, preferably Sewell as I think he could really bring some ball-winning and toughness to our mids and also has the Barlow factor about him. Hibberd would be awesome as well still young, proven himself at VFL and could provide great run of halfback.

Hawks and Richmond (and maybe one other).....there is a new rookie rule whereby clubs can keep a rookie spot free, then nominate a few players to train over summer and the option to list one in March....not sure how/why/when it was brought in....(I suppose it assists clubs choose a positional type player depending on injury, rehab, etc..) or when they got to choose the players on the training list (I assume at the conclusion of the rookie draft proper).

Thanks Splendini. Not sure there is much of an advantage making use of that rule (or disadvantage not). Sounds to me like it is a rule for the procrastinators. If you are sure of the talent you have chosen you dont need an extra 3 months to be sure of it. The Pelchin effect is starting to fade fast :thumbsu:

agree largely....in their situation they might want to give Tuck some more time, but a few months therapy or rehab isn't going to give much away.....I can maybe see some benefit if for example your ruck stocks are weak and you had one coming back from an LTI, and you wanted to give them a bit more time.

Can they play NAB?? It might be helpful to trial a few out in that series.

As you say though, your recruiters hsould be watching them over a period of years.....3 extra months aint going to help in most cases.
