Tame Impala are a great aussie band. Listening to Lonerism right now and it is wonderful. Very creative.

I would still rate The Sleepy Jackson just above them, but I think that is more to do with personal taste than a value judgement. Luke Steele's pop sensibility is the sealer for me. I have never seen Tame Impale live though and I was never a fan of The Sleepy Jackson live. Steele's vision in the studio was never matched on stage.

Tame Impala have already built up very solid International respect and may soon be the undisputed Best Australian band.

For me, they're miles in front already, so it will be interesting if they can keep on track after two quite brilliant albums.

I always thought they were great live. Really raw and loose. Totally different to on album.. which i thought was a great thing. But yeah.. always saw alot of people scratching their heads haha.

hopefully he does another SJ Album

Really digging the new FlyLo.

Cosmogramma was such an astonishing 'moment in time' album. I feel i've been growing up with FlyLo's music, maturing along with it. I remember buying Los Angeles when I was into Burial. I bought Cosmogramma at a time that I was getting obsessed with Autechre and more into hip hop. It was also released when I just had moved to Canberra 2.5 years ago and had my own apartment, I remember playing Cosmogramma & Loveless so much during that initial month. Cosmogramma is an album I raved about in 2010, but over the last 12 months I have somewhat fallen out of love with it. Until the Quiet Comes is such a grower. FlyLo this time around isnt bombarding you with everything under the sun, giving this record a real consistent mood and hypnotic universe, a chance to breath. There are a couple strong sections in this album. Very organic and dreamlike.

Very chill and well-handled, but still with some fun tunes like Putty Boy Strut & The Nightcaller. The last few tracks especially are beautiful. This will tide me over until new AE.

I just don't think Kevin Parker is the kind of dude to make a bad album, let alone tarnish the first two. From all accounts, he's a workaholic and someone absolutely obsessed with every facet of music.

My main worry is that he'll get Radioheaditis. They both slave over work and get to that point where they don't know what's good, and what's bad. I mean, that's what a producer is for. But those two either don't use producers, or, use one who's extremely active and embedded within the musicians. I dunno. I reckon there's a pile of really-fuarkin-good Tame Impala songs that we'll never hear. "Elephant" has been around since their first few shows, and Kevin just never thought it was a good enough song, when in actual fact, it's the funkiest thing he's put out.

Sleepy Jackson were good. But I always felt as though their records got a bit tied down and dull, and the singles were always the best (and stood out by miles, in my opinion). Tame Impala craft totally interesting and varied soundscapes, tempos, and structures, but with a totally obvious and cohesive aesthetic... that's what makes a great album.

And again – I never dug Tame Impala a massive amount until "Apocalypse Dream." I'm by no means a fan boy.

Very well constructed perspective there S.A.

I read that Parker wasn't happy with the finished product of this album and went back to the States to virtually re-do the production himself.

I'm pretty sure that the producer was Dave Fridmann of Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev fame. That must have gone down well.

It's just personal taste really.

They are also pretty different really. I just rate Sleepy Jackson better both studio and live. Tame Impala are good live.. they do the buisness. It's mostly a heads down affair though. SJ had an unpredictable element about them live though which i love in a group. They could be clean and crisp or downright loud and dirty. (especially when playing the early EP material)

Because I write for a music website, I've spent all evening beginning to form an end of year list and it's just ridiculously difficult this year in particular. There have been so many fantastic releases that it could almost be considered overwhelming.

Look forward to your list.

Overall though I've found this year very underwhelming to date.

That's disappointing. Better luck next year, my friend!

I'd rate Sleepy Jackson better too, their Lovers album was an eclectic mix of great tracks with so many different styles.

I like all their tracks off that album but this would be my favourite, gem of a song.

word. that is a top tune:thumbsu:

I think it's time and place to with Tame Impala to. Not taking anything away from them.. But supporting MGMT at their peak helps.. as does working with an acclaimed producer like Fridmann. Everything fell into place for them. Some credit has to be given to the likes of Luke Steele, Later period Daniel Johns, the first few dappled cities albums, Dan Kelly, Gerling (a band i def took for granted and overlooked) for warming local ears to more fleshed out psych pop sounds..

Just heard yesterday that new Bruno Mars song, Locked Out Of Heaven. I swear I thought it was Sting/Police. Never liked any of his previous songs, not really my type, but this one is pretty good. Don't care if it's a [part] Police rip-off.

The Weeknd's 'Trilogy' is out on the 13th. A compilation album of his three mixtapes with a couple of new songs.

If you haven't heard him, your going to want to do so. His music is so ****ing amazing that it floors me everytime.

Chances are if you like Frank Ocean you'll love him. It's silly to pick sides, even though the internet will say that you have to.

Great tracks just fell into their lap. :)

Yes, timing can be a big part in the success of a band but if you want to go down that track, we can drag in just about any and every band out there today.

Tame Impala have earned the plaudits they're currently being given. A 9 on Pitchfork doesn't come about through sheer luck.

I like Sleepy Jackson too, but is it me or does anyone feel this way about the SJ/TI argument:

Sleepy Jackson feel very Australian whilst Tame Impala have an English feel to them.
I've always preferred English music to Australian hence my leaning.

I liked house of balloons for what it was.
Thursday was not to bad either.. but i had enough of the sound halfway through that one. There is only so much emotional crooning a 25yr old white Australian dude can handle.

Finally got around to Divine Fits (britt daniel from spoons new band)

Don't know much about the other muppets in the bad but they sound alright. One of them sounds like the bloke from semisonic on one track, DON'T ACT LIKE YOUR TO COOL FOR SEMISONIC..

A 30 track album, probably not the best way to introduce yourself to the world.
