Everyone reacts differently, pretty big thing these boys have just gone through.
Lifechanging event and they are only kids really.

I did say in an earlier post that he could be shy and overwhelmed by it all...whatever the reason, he didn't look very happy at the time....I also said that could change when he gets with our boys.

Here's a better pic, everybody

  1. Rob Kerr is not our only recruiter
  2. Do you think you know more than our recruiters?
  3. Have you considered what the upside of these picks might be
  4. Please settle down.
1. No, but he's our head recruiter and so the responsibility falls to him
2. No, but judging from our drafting in the last 10 years they don't know much more than me either
3. Yes, and they have less upside than others we could have picked. Our 1st pick doesn't want to be here and may pack his bags at the 1st opportunity.
4. I'm sorry I'm not part of the clique, this is a community board not the lions sycophants board I'm allowed to express negative opinions about the club

As I said to my mate yesterday I am a bit sick of the club drafting utility types like a couple of them we drafted this year. If you have a look at our list the likes of Merrett, Staker, Patty, Ash, Lester etc etc can all perform quite servicable jobs in numerous positions, but how many of those are great players at one position? Probably only Merrett if you had to name one.

I believe we are at a time in our list development where we need to target set areas instead of utility types.

However, in saying all that I think we should all wait and see what the club has plans for these guys before we get too critical. How do we know we haven't earmarked Paparone too take over that forward role? Or Mayes that classy wingman with elite disposal that some of us may have hoped Drummond could've been without injuries.

I guess we'll see...

Might need to name who we should've picked and why if you want to argue about our selections instead of making up shit.

99% of people on here have no idea about the players in the draft other than reading some phantom drafts and watching highlights. Everyone has favourites but some of the things said on here are just embarrassing.

not sure how to do the link but from the lions website Kerr said this

“We came tonight with those three boys in our minds as who we wanted to pick - we obviously had backups but those were the three that we wanted to walk away with.”

Seems there was no others we looked at - we came and got exactly what we were after. Can't complain about that.

No one has a problem with posting negative opinions about the club. It's when you post stuff like all our picks are "spuds" and massively overreact that people have issues with it.

Are you assuming Mayes doesn't want to be here based on his body language when he was picked? Cause that's ridiculous.

I think you might be misleading yourself on a few of those points. Our recruiters have not been around for 10 years, and you don't actually know what young Mayes is thinking.

And you are absolutely allowed to express your opinion, good or bad about the club. Please do. I love it when that happens, because I love robust discussion. The way in which you are doing it is what I find objectionable. I didn't say 'stop', I said 'settle down'.

Mayes - huge talent. Not really a need pick but you can't argue with his talent. I know one recruiter had him at 3.

Paparone - needs to sort out his kicking but a massive runner and is good in front of goal. Could potentially become a Nick Reiwoldt type but I see him more as a Gilbert type tall running flanker.

Close - I think we might not have expected such a run on KPs at the beginning of the second and Close might have been behind a few of the others taken just ahead of him. He thinks of himself as a forward but for me I see him as KPD. He can be a guy who can run with the Reiwoldt types and has the height to combat some of the really big forwards that are coming into the game. His field kicking is also good for a big guy and I think he would be handy in this regard compared with Clarke and McKeever. I see him as a pretty similar player to Lisle actually.

Coming into the draft I thought we needed to come away with a big physical KPF target and an inside mid. We did not address either of these really. What to make of that? I think we have to rate Tickner and Hammelmann or Michael very highly as physical forward prospects and similarly Conway as an inside mid.

One thing is clear though is that we thought we needed to address our ability to run out games. This was a weakness this year and the guys we added this year are all going to be able to help in that area.

Does anyone who's seen a bit more of Mayes, know if looks capable of playing regularly next year if he has a really good pre season? Or will he be like most of our other high draft picks and not look like getting more than a game or 2 for the first few seasons

Yeah it might be a good idea to play a wait and see with getting highly, highly speculative picks when we're entrenched in the top 8 but we're not and we're a long way off playing finals and hemorrhaging money like there's no tomorrow and drafting another tall utility and ruck/foward when we've got a dozen of them in the team won't help us get there. I guess kerr gets to keep his job as he placates his sycophantic supporters here with a couple of his 'analysis' blogs every year and supporters are leaving the club in droves in the real world.

Who'll replace brown when he retires? Are we hoping one of our ruck/forward spuds will miracously come good or our tall utilities to suddenly grow 4cm and become contested marking machines because I'm not seeing it. We've got no one currently good enough to tie browny's bootlaces.

Dude you've clearly got no idea about development if you think every ruck/forward we have ATM is a spud. Especially when you consider number of games, age, etc.

As for the replacement of Browny, do you honestly think that you're going to recruit a kid that is a deadset, obvious and blatant champion of the game at the age of 18 with the picks we had? (father-son/academy being the exception)

Did you think that the teams above us would just say 'oh well, the Lions need to replace Browny soon, so we'll let them have the best KPF prospect, I'm sure our fans won't mind'.

I know its a bit much to ask sometimes, but at least try to consider reality when making unreasonable assumptions.

Highly doubt that VtB.

What do you want him to say? "Yeah we really wanted "X Player" but got screwed over so we went with the guy who was our second option".

Though they're correct that the three would have been on their minds so they're probably happy regardless.

So Paparone couldn't be the CHF we may have been after Quigs?

Mayes is a medium-sized lead-up forward is a two-time under 18 All-Australian who played senior football for North Adelaide in the SANFL this year.

At 187cm-tall and 78 kg, he is quick, agile and has clean hands at both ground level and in marking contests.

He has an excellent workrate and is good user of the ball.

A dependable shot at goal, Mayes is also capable of running through the midfield and has been likened to Western Bulldogs star Ryan Griffin.

Just on Conway, What are our chances of us getting him next year?

It would actually make sense getting forwards this year if we're hanging our hat on getting Conway next year.

I think we will bring him on pretty slowly. He has been playing in the SANFL the last two years and doing pretty well but I think we give the likes of Karnezis and Cornelius first crack at the forward role and Yeo, Crisp, Polec, Docherty and others would be in line for the midfield time. I see Mayes being the type of player everyone is hoping that Karnezis could become. He will get 8ish games next year I am thinking given Vossy does not like to give rookies that much playing time and Mayes does need to put on some weight.

Sounds more like Paparone will play as CHB and Close to be the project tall forward.

Lions National Talent Manager Rob Kerr says: "Marco is a really long runner. He's 194-195cm tall and just runs and runs. He'll be a really good connector for us - connect the backline to the forward line. He's a young boy with lots of development. He kicked 40 goals in the WAFL Colts, and we think he's a boy with a lot of potential."

Lions National Talent Manager Rob Kerr says: "Michael Close is 196cm and is really a centre half-forward. There are a few rough edges we'll try to knock off him over the next few years, but the thing in Michael's favour is that he's very competitive and that was the thing that probably stood out for us. He's going to be a project player, but we need to start looking beyond Brown. We need to find players who can hold down forward roles for us."
