2012 Draft Discussion

The quick x-factor type players are usually the last ones you need to finish off. They also are usually able to have an impact fairly quickly, unlike your genuine mids that carry the load that need a few years to get right up to AFL standard. I don't mind us ignoring these types for the moment in order to get some quality KPP in and developing.

Mason Shaw's name has been thrown around quite a lot as a potential KPF pickup for us this draft. Is there any footage around of his WAFL form?

Hasn't played much footy so far this year due to having his jaw broken by the Eagles' Mitch Brown in a WAFL practice match earlier in the year. Played his first match back in Colts and kicked 8.4 off 12 kicks and 8 marks. Played a full season in Colts last year and kicked 66.

That does sound very promising. He would fit right in with rest of the WA boys over here. I do remember the Mitch Brown incident from just a few weeks ago.

Who is Clay Cameron TBD? As in what type of player?

Key forward/defender for Mt Gravatt. One of the better Queensland prospects to come along in a while.

Gold Coast almost certain to take him as a zone selection.

Would love to get him. Actually played from u9's-u13's in Clay's team, he obviously dominated back then. He was a year or two younger than the rest of us though, naturally. We could really use a player like him I think. Especially in defence, which is where I prefer him as a player personally.

Our drafting is something i've brought up time and time again, and until people actually have a look at it, you really don't realise how far out our list is. The players in this 02-07 period should be our core group of senior players carrying the club forward, with the young players 08-now adding what they can. It's worse when decent players we nabbed in this period like Riska have also left, we just dont have anything in this age or experience group. The fact that we have so many players playing in our best 22 from drafts 08-onwards speaks volumes of our previous drafting and list management.

As Weevil mentioned, the 09 draft period didn't put us back 10 years, our list managment over this time did. Really wish someone would do a bit of a story on this to help change peoples expectations.

Best available in the draft for me. If there is a great KPF there about pick 6 or what ever we end up with, go it, otherwise best pacy mid.

I'm assuming this encompasses the Gubby period?

I might try to knock up an article :D

Really highlights a lot of where our list is at.

Do you think the Lions would have a proper look at Cameron TBD? Sounds like a really good prospect.

I'd be interested to see his height. I've only seen a glimpse of him but I have heard he is more a 3rd tall in terms of his build. That was info from last year though.

189cm, 79kg (as per the prospectus)

Cameron, a strong overhead mark who reads the play well, can play either forward or back. He played at the 09 U16 champs for QLD yet missed the majority of the '10 season with OP. In '11 he played 7 matches at senior level for Mt Gravatt in the NEAFL and was also selected to play for his state at the '11 U18 champs, averaging 8 disposals and 5 marks across his 5 matches.

190cm is on the short side. I don't mind recruiting a forward at that height but he needs to be special.

Also, with Lester and Karnezis around the same height, Cameron would need to bring a point of difference. The contested marking might be it.

Yeah not sure if we need another undersized KPP and it sounds like Suns are more than in the box seat regarding him anyway.

If we go KP with our first pick like Mason Shaw for example then I would definitely prefer a mid at pick 23

Thought exactly the same.

Either KPP player at the 1st pick that is worthy of the selection or best available. This is the line the club no doubt will take. We do need help everywhere.

The more I see GC & GWS the more I think they have squads that if developed correctly they will be so difficult to combat in 5 years time.

While on GC anyone else notice they have improved without some senior guys? Perhaps a game plan involving not just blocking for one particular gun midfielder actually allows some of their talented youngsters to express themselves and play their game.

Yep, and not with any sense of glee either (more like envy).

Have been watching GWS with the same feelings, but I guess that was always the plan.

Have been watching with interest over the last few days in regards to what everyone is saying and what are our needs and how to do it.

Our current KPP's are young and there is an expectation of let's wait and see and fingers crossed well see how they go. For me this is lacking a bit in that by this stage especially for the KPF's and the years that they have in the system we should have seen something from them by now to be the players to take us forward. I am also very interested to see the development in Justin Clarke and Sam Michael as KPD's and there fore maybe not so much of an immediate requirement. The notion of taking us forward is what it is all about and not to be a mid table team. Therefore raising the need to get two tall KPF's into our club. Depending on where we finish this year and if he warrants such a low pick then i feel that someone like Mason Shaw is the person we should go after and that if he hasn't already been taken off the table. Let's remember that Buddy, Roughie, Hurley and Kennedy were top ten picks and these are the calibre of forwards we need to get into the club. But only if he warrants such a low pick. If Mason Shaw was off the table then the likes of Jimmy Toumpas, Josh Simpson and Jake Stringer as best available mid.

Being a mids draft the likelyhood of a good one being there for our two in the twenties is a possibilty. Speed...yes!!!!, agility.....yes, skill.......yes. Therefore some names that i think that should be looked at. Matthew Haynes, Laine Wilkins, Ben Kennedy, Shannon Taylor and Emmanuel Irra. These type of players have two or more of the above requirements.

Some KPP's that could be around those picks if we were to go that way, Aaron Luccon, Tanner Smith, Kristian Jaksch and Spencer White.

As a dark horse and possible third round is Anthony Bonaddio a shut down player who also gets the ball.

I really like looking at the next crop of players that we might be drafting each year as it gives me hope of us moving forward. Obviously over the nationals players rise and fall but it certainly is fun. It will take us at least two to three years before i realistically see us moving up. More or less when our 2008 crop are 100-150 games and are the core of our team. Be patient my friends.

Gold Coast are playing their cards close to their chest with Clay. They have not made any promises or given any indication as to whether or not they will take him. He did train with them 5 days a week over the pre-season, but so did Yagmoor last year and he ended up at the Pies.

Looking at Clay, I'd expect him to grow over the next 12 months. He has Ian Thorpe like feet and has worked hard to fill out his skinny frame. Position wise, he is a forward every day of the week for mine. Super athleticism and vice like hands are his biggest weapons, seem like a waste down back personally. However, he did play full back for the AIS against Box Hill and did really well from all reports.

At NEAFL level I'd agree with you, but fitting into our team I'd put him down back. He's not a KPF so would, as has been mentioned, be battling Lester, Karnezis, Cornelius and perhaps Retzlaff (depending on how he develops) for what is just one spot if the resting ruckman thing works out how the club wants. Meanwhile, we've got no tall young talent down back at all. I've seen him play down there a few times and think he could be a genuine asset for us as we desperately need young defenders.

Not underrating his ability as a forward at all, just really believe he's great in defence. One of those players who just has exceptional reading of the play. I saw a game recently where it seemed every single ball that went down back went into his hands and straight back the other way.

Either way, he's got the potential to be an elite talent, and I'd love if we were able to snap him up. If the Suns don't strike though, I've heard he's also chatted with Geelong recruiters more than once.

Not since last year, I'll give you that. Once during a cameo in the school team I co-coached and once in the Vultures reserves. He didn't play down back for the whole match in either game, but was incredibly effective when he was down there.

I remember Anthony's brother was posting videos of Anthony on here a couple of years ago, and Anthony might have posted himself -Lions supporters obviously so worth keeping any eye on him.

Ah ok.

Claye hasn't played reserves at Mt Gravatt, only seniors..
